Patrick Mahomes on Kareem Hunt: That’s my dude

USA Today Sports

When the Browns play the Chiefs in the divisional round on Sunday, it will be Kareem Hunt‘s first trip back to Kansas City since the club cut him late in the 2018 season.

The Chiefs waived Hunt on Nov. 30 that year once video emerged of the running back shoving and kicking a woman. Hunt subsequently signed with his hometown team and served and eight-game suspension to begin the 2019 season.

Now Hunt will face the organization that drafted him, saying on Instagram that the matchup is “personal.”

But not everyone feels that way. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Monday he’s glad things are going well for the running back. And in a Monday interview with KCSP 610 Sports Radio, Patrick Mahomes said he and Hunt are still friends.

That’s my dude, man,” Mahomes said, via Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. “I came in with Kareem, and obviously we’re not together anymore, but I still stay in touch. He’s a heck of a football player, and someone who was one of my best friends when we first got on the team together.”

Mahomes didn’t get into the specifics, but did note that at one point he lobbied the Chiefs’ front office to potentially give Hunt another chance before the running back signed with the Browns.

“I don’t want to talk about a lot of it, but I just talked to the guys because Kareem was one of our dudes, man,” Mahomes said. “He was not only a great football player, but he was one of our best friends on the team. We had to continue to battle forward at an unfortunate time, but at the same time, I still have a relationship with Kareem and he’s still one of my good friends.”

Hunt led the league in rushing as a rookie in 2017, recording 1,327 yards and eight touchdowns for Kansas City. He also had 53 receptions for 455 yards and three TDs.

In 2020, Hunt had 1,145 yards from scrimmage — 841 rushing, 304 receiving — with 11 total touchdowns. In the wild-card victory over Pittsburgh, Hunt took eight carries for 48 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

“He’s a special football player,” Mahomes said. “He finishes every single play, he catches and runs, he can do it all. I’m happy for him that he’s back home in Cleveland and he’s able to play really good football.”

  1. I hope Hunt isn’t mad at KC, when this went down it was about the the start of the PC culture. And that said, KC released one of the top backs in the league. It’s not like they wanted to. And CLE reaped the benefits without having to give up anything, and that’s no fault or CLE. Pre-incidents, Hunt would’ve been worth a1st round pick in a trade. Even after his alcohol issues he’d probably still be worth a 3rd rounder.

  2. Really? I’d keep it a secret if I was still in contact with someone like him.

  3. I’m embarrassed for Mahomes in this respect. The fact of the matter is, Hunt should have never been allowed back on a football field. His actions represented to worst sort of behavior by any standard, and certainly a behavior that the NFL, and any professional sport should never forgive, or essentially ignore. The same should have applied to Joe Mixon after he slammed his fist into a young woman and broke 5 bones in her face – it could have easily killed her. But, a wink and nod….the league should be ashamed of itself.

  4. Obviously, what got Hunt cut from the team is okay with them. What Tyreek Hill did was apparently okay, too. I’d still like to know why one was cut and the other wasn’t.

  5. KC should of just suspended him and kept him. They could of beat the Pats with him that yar in the AFC championship.

What did Tyreek do while on KC that should have gotten him cut? There was an allegation of domestuc abuse which the DA dropped because he couldn’t prove a case against Hill and the NFL also investigated and couldn’t come up with any proof to suspend Hill. So after being cleared what exactly would KC have cutted Hill for?

  7. Love going to the comments section to see the domestic violence apologists give us their spiel on why kicking a woman is fine because the guy plays a sport well for their team. Wonder how they’d feel if it was their mom or sister in those videos or police reports. Disgusting.

  8. I will say I think it was the combination of having Hill, then Hunts actions, that got Hunt cut. But to be clear, the only issue Tyreek had was before he was drafted. What happened 2 years ago was extortion. And the league not interjecting provides they believe that too.

  9. This just proves the Black Lives Matter in professional sports, but Women’s Lives Don’t Matter. Kick and beat women all you want, and you get a slap on the wrist, and go back playing a game for millions of dollars.

Hey, NFL players, you would be more beneficial to women, if you stopped wearing pink in october, and stopped beating women.

He beat a woman. That’s what Tyreek Hill did. Just because he paid off the woman not to testify does not mean he was innocent. The NFL never goes by whether the player gets convicted by the legal system. Zeke Elliott and Ray Rice were never convicted of assault charges, yet Zeke was suspended 6 games, and Rice never played football again.

  11. Earnest Byner / Kevin Mack > Hunt / Chubb. Lol just kidding, two different eras but love that they have the same two headed monster at RB like in the old days. Hopefully Hunt or Chubb doesnt fumble at the goal line to cost a super bowl berth though.

  12. hunt was a beast… if he hasn’t got cut, kc would have 2 superbowl rings and mahomes wouldn’t know what a playoff loss feels like.
