PFT’s NFL 2020 divisional round picks

Baltimore Ravens v Buffalo Bills

Last week, MDS and I agreed on all six games. We got four of them right. Agains the spread, MDS went 3-3. I was a pathetic 2-4.

This week, we disagree on one of the four games. For the only three, we have the same winner, both straight up and against the spread.

Check out all picks below, and chime in with your own in the comments.

Rams (+6.5) at Packers

MDS’s take: Aaron Rodgers is playing his best football, and the Rams will be going with either an injured Jared Goff or an injured John Wolford. There are other lenses from which to view this game, and some of them favor the Rams, namely that the Rams have the superior defense. But even if that defense plays well against Rodgers, in the end I think Rodgers and Davante Adams make enough big plays to win this game.

MDS’s pick: Packers 30, Rams 20.

Florio’s take: The Packers need running back Aaron Jones to have a solid performance as he moves toward free agency. They also need quarterback Aaron Rodgers to find slivers and creases into which the ball can be thrown to receiver Davante Adams, even if he’s blanketed by Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey. On defense, Green Bay needs to sell out to stop the run and force the Rams to beat them by throwing the ball through the cold Lambeau air.

Florio’s pick: Packers 31, Rams 21.

Ravens (+2.5) at Bills

MDS’s take: Over the last several weeks, the Bills may be playing better than any team in the NFL. The Ravens are playing good football at the right time, too, but I don’t think I’d pick anyone to go to Buffalo and beat the Bills right now.

MDS’s pick: Bills 27, Ravens 20.

Florio’s take: The Ravens continue to be the hottest team in the NFL, and the Bills had a near miss against the Colts. Baltimore can run the ball very well, and the Bills can’t. That could be the difference, especially if it snows.

Florio’s pick: Ravens 24, Bills 21.

Browns (+10) at Chiefs

MDS’s take: The Browns poured it on early and never looked back against the Steelers, but the well-rested Chiefs are simply the better team. Patrick Mahomes will outplay Baker Mayfield and I expect the Chiefs to get at least one big play on special teams.

MDS’s pick: Chiefs 35, Browns 21.

Florio’s take: The best-case for the Browns includes slowing things down, shortening the game, and limiting the number of possessions that Kansas City will have. Even then, can Cleveland outscore a Kansas City team that always finds a way? It’s doubtful.

Florio’s pick: Chiefs 35, Browns 24.

Buccaneers (+3) at Saints

MDS’s take: Tom Brady vs. Drew Brees should be an NFL playoff classic, and it’s a game that could easily go either way. The Saints are favored and won both regular-season meetings handily, but I just have a feeling that the Bucs are peaking at the right time, while the Saints are slowing down as the season wears on.

MDS’s pick: Buccaneers 28, Saints 27.

Florio’s take: Throw out the first two installments of this series; the Buccaneers have improved dramatically since Week One and Week Nine. Tom Brady has played 17 games with his new team, and the offense is peaking. In what likely will be the last career game for Drew Brees, it quite possibly will be yet another heartbreaking exit from the postseason for the Saints.

Florio’s pick: Buccaneers 24, Saints 23.

  1. Cold and snow in Green Bay on Saturday. Three remaining NFC teams all play in warm weather or in a dome —- L.A., Tampa Bay, New Orleans.

Aaron Rogers’ plan to route the playoffs through Titletown looking pretty good right about now.

    Go! Pack! Go!

  2. It’ll be nice to see the Bucs play a team with a winning record for the first time in months. I get you can only play the teams on your schedule, but they don’t match up well with the Saints, got humiliated last time, and there’s a myth about beating the same team thrice in one season. Saints by a lot.

  3. In the interest of fighting misinformation, the narrative that the Bills can’t run is false. They are a very pass-heavy team by design. The one game where they had to mostly run in inclement weather, the first game against the Patriots, they ran well and they won. But I guess that’s the storyline here, not the admission by Lamar Jackson himself that he’s never played in the snow before. Makes sense

  4. Bold prediction on the Saints-Bucs game. As a Bucs fan, I am trying to be objective, but there is this. Brady had a bad day during the second game, a lot of it attributable to the pass rush, but he could have just been off. Since them, Donovan Smith has upped his game and Gronk has been used as an extra blocker and Brady has been off the charts. AB has found his groove, and Devon White has honed his technique for stalling the blitz until the RB pass blocker commits, then rushing in a flash. If the RB waits for him, he is not there to help (or stop another blitzer).
Will Armstead play? How is his replacement? The Bucs have been running the ball well lately and Cappa’s replacement, Stinnie, is a good run blocker.

  5. dont sleep on the browns, they have nothing to lose. kc has been letting non playoff caliber teams hang around all year.
    .

  6. Who do I want to see lose more Brady or Sean Payton? I’ll be holding my nose and pulling for the Bucs

He’s not wrong. Looked it up and since 1970 teams that have gone 2-0 against a team in the regular season are 14-7 against that team in the post season. Those stats are only through 2018, not sure if it has happened in the last couple years. But yeah, Bucs winning is actually less likely now that it’s a 3rd matchup.

  8. For the Ravens/Bills game, I would also add that the Bills run defense (#20) isn’t nearly as good as Tennessee’s (#1). The Ravens rushing attack is #1. I expect a heavy dose of Jackson, Dobbins, Edwards and Ricard to wear down the Bills defense. Then Lamar to finish them off with passes to Andrews, Brown and whomever else can contribute. I do however predict that the Bills will get out front early. But the Ravens defense will settle in and take over.
Should be an amazing match up.

  9. I’m just looking forward to a great weekend of football. All 4 games should be entertaining to say the least.

  10. It is extremely difficult to beat a team three times in a season but it is much easier when you have already beaten them twice.

    Saints 30
    Bucs 24

  11. Chiefs’ O line has been terrible all year with Mahomes scrambling for his life to make plays. Myles Garrett COULD be the difference maker. I feel it could be a closer game than people think.

  12. I have to see the Bucs beat the Saints to believe it. I also believe Chiefs/Browns will be much closer.

  13. Rodgers may be due a bad game. He is lucky Rams have no offense. Bills are hot. Ravens already making excuses. But that run game is big. KC is riding a thin line. I would like to see them and the Bills play. TB is gonna show up. Can the saints let kamara do his thing or does payton outsmart himself.

So you say if Tampa would be the team to go play NFCCG in Green Bay Tom Brady would have issues with the cold weather? Hm….

  15. I want to see the Bucs blow out the Saints so in garbage time, Brees will start padding his stats. That’s what he is: the ultimate stats padder.

  16. No idea who will win, but I keep hearing about how much better Tampa Bay is now. They were 4.5 point favorites in the second game, so you thought the same thing back then as well. Saints aren’t quick-strike anymore, but they can grind defenses into exhaustion, hoping that’s the case Sunday.

  17. Rams upset the Packers, and we get to see Aaron cry like usual. The Bills are the pick of the weekend put ur mortgage on that one. Take the Browns and the points although Mahomes will squeak out a 3 point win, and finally the Bucs win by 10, and Drew Brees will be coming back next year, because he can’t stand the thought of Brady passing him in total yards and touchdowns

  18. Ravens/Bills could be the best game this weekend. Lamar has never played in snowy conditions, but the weather plays to the Ravens’ strengths.

Tucker makes a game-winning field goal Adam Vinatieri-style to put the Ravens in the AFC Championship Game next weekend.

    Ravens 27
    Bills 24

  19. The Chiefs are in the NFL’s Elite Eight. Of the other 7 teams, they have played 4 of them, already. They are 4-0 in those games. They’ve been playing playoff games all year.

  20. Ravens 24 Bills 21 I think this game comes down to the Ravens running game, which has looked unstoppable lately. The Bills journey ends here.

Packers 38 Rams 13 We saw this song and dance when the Packers played against the Titans. Rams are not prepared for the cold.

Chiefs 40 Browns 27 The Chiefs are going to destroy the Browns as much as I’d love to see the Browns win. Mahomes will have a field day against the Browns.

Saints 31 Bucs 23 As much as I’d love for Tom Brady to go to the NFC Title game, the Saints have owned the Bucs this season on every side of the ball. Brady will be better on his passing to Brown and Evans to make it a game, but look for Brees to turn back the clock and make the clutch throws to Thomas to put him up against the Packers.

  21. Go Chiefs, but excited about everyone in the playoffs except the Saints. Don’t particularly like Tom but he is the GOAT and has his new team in it. Browns and Bills are fresh faces so that’s cool and Rodgers playing at his level is good for the game too.

    Small markets!

  22. Browns missing Vernon, can’t handle tight ends, secondary suspect. On plus side they can score from all over and the Oline should be mostly intact(?).

  23. Love how all the “experts” keep sleeping on Rams Defense . Counted Rams out vs cards finall game , as well as vs Seahawks last week . RAMS 24-10

  24. Florio and MDS are smart—it’s playoff time and Tom Brady is hot and motivated. Good luck to Drew Brees in retirement. He had a great career.

  25. The Buffalo weather angle is overblown – for both teams. Non factor – Lamar never played in it – don’t care, don’t think it matters. Unless it’s windy and wet, the snow is a non factor – and you could argue it benefits a passing offense more, bad footing is far more of an issue running than running routes if you ever played, particularly if you are an edge runner.

  26. If Brees had Brady’s defenses throughout his career, he’d have more superbowls than Brady. He has always gotten the Saints the lead in the playoffs only to be let down by his defenses in the final mins to lose. Look up the history.

  27. The chiefs have known since early November that they would be in the playoffs and have know since early December when the Steelers fell apart that they would probably be the 1 seed. Yet during those two months they had convincing wins against both the saints and bucs. They also earlier this year beat the bills and ravens convincingly to. So keep wishful thinking all you want that the chiefs aren’t that good and that they will be beaten in the playoffs…

  28. It’s amusing to see just how many people are so confident in picking the Saints. Their defense allowed the Vikings to score 33 points not that long ago. The Redskins were a 7-9 team with Dwayne Haskins, but they have a top 3 pass rush, while the Saints do not. What have the Saints done with the same supporting cast in the playoffs these last three seasons? Look at how Drew Brees has played these last three games. I don’t care about the 14-7 all-time record for teams meeting three times. Everyone also thought Brady would not come back from 28-3 against the Falcons in Super Bowl LI, or that he would be playing for the Bucs today. Sorry, but the Saints are playoff chokers.

  29. And am I the only one not worried about Lamar abs the Ravens? They are ‘hot’ beating the bottom 8-9 teams….. only 20 points against as terrible TN defense? On one of his best games? Not worried about this game at all 31-13 with Baltimore scoring first. Baltimore is good, but the Bills got their clunker out of the way vs Indy who frankly worried me more than Baltimore. Bills pull away and Baltimore can’t keep up

The Browns have scored 40+ points in four games this year, Chiefs 1. I like our chances

    ———————————————-

The Browns averaged 25.5 ppg , the Chiefs averaged 27.9, the includes a week 16 game where the starters were rested . This game is going to be like the Browns-Steelers with the Chiefs being the Browns and Pittsburgh being the Browns. Its a good story and I commend the Browns but Kansas City will win by 14.

    —-

Haha…just another one of the loooong line of “if” guys weighing in. Always amusing.

Since you like to look things up, maybe you’d care to notice that in many years, Brady dragged and hid below average to poor defenses to AFC title games and Superbowls.

  33. AFC Title game: Bills > Chiefs
NFC Title game: Bucs < Pack

Pack gonna win a squeaker this weekend. That Rams D is nasty and will eat Erin's lunch all day.
Saints are going to Saint, and lose by some weird metric that only they can discover, then claim the refs took it from them and cry about it (again), while someone in Louisiana tries to sue the league again.

Ravens peaked last week – it was like their SuperBowl to finally win a playoff game with Lamar. Their energy is gone.

Browns will give the Chiefs a hard time, but the Chiefs have the stripes on their side and the game will be decided by a few whack penalties.

  34. “If Brees had Brady’s defenses throughout his career, he’d have more superbowls than Brady. He has always gotten the Saints the lead in the playoffs only to be let down by his defenses in the final mins to lose. Look up the history.” Based on what? Brees threw the game-ending interception against the Vikings in overtime a few seasons back. He didn’t exactly play great against the Saints up there in Seattle back in the 2013 season playoffs. Heck, would the Bucs even be in the playoffs right now with Drew’s noodle arm? Using your logic, if Brady played in a dome his whole career, he’d easily have 8,000 more passing yards right now. If he had Rob Gronkowski, Travis Kelce, or Jimmy Graham for the first seven years of his career, perhaps the Patriots would have won a forth super bowl in the early 2000’s.

  35. Here in New England, many markets got to see the Bucs games pretty much every week. The two games not broadcast live here I still got to see later. The Bucs offense is vastly improved in the last few weeks. The receivers are running their routes better, Brady is getting a better look at the defense via pre-snap motion and use of play action, and Gronk is contributing big time on the blocking scheme. The Bucs should put up a lot of points. The real issue is the defense. They need to be able to pressure better off the line, learn to set an edge, and for crying out loud improve the secondary’s performance. The key to whether the Bucs can win will be how the defense performs.

  36. At this point in history, any “if” argument that claims “this guy or that guy” would have more Super Bowls than Brady is preposterous. No one is even close, much less Brees. Not even a debate and never will be.

How many appearances and victories would satisfy everyone? 20? That’s how meatheaded the discussion has become because it’s drowned in childish bias.

  37. Henne will finish the Chiefs game in order to rest Mahomes for the following week. It will be a blow out.

  38. Rams trounce the packers in the falsely defined frozen tundra. As long as the refs call an honest game. If not the Leagues princesses could possibly win.

  39. Everyone uses the Bills game vs the Chiefs as a gauge on the Bills run D and run O in inclement weather, but what they fail to realize is that Buffalo was not only short handed in that game(Milano/Wallace), but they were playing the defending SB champs. As the season went on the Bills got stronger and became more adverse… this is a much better team than the week 6 version… don’t count them out yet.

  40. Max Kellerman says the Browns are so bad that if Mahomes loses it will hurt his reputation. LOL

  41. This game reminds me of the Raiders coming to Buffalo in 90-91. AFC Championship game, and the Raiders were on a roll, running the ball all over people, but no one was afraid of their passing game. Bills just struggled with Miami the week prior AND the Raiders we’re the ‘hot’ – Bills Offense and Defense clicked and that game was over before it began 51-3- that’s this weeks game people – Baltimore enjoy the 7-0 lead after your first drive, you won’t see it again – 31-13 Buffalo, if not worse. Bills/KC is looming and NOW that will be a fun one – to be the best, beat the best – we want another shot

  42. The Ravens are a popular upset pick, which is understandable. That run game & defense can dictate games.

The Bills job will be to take that away early. Building a lead will take some of the Ravens’ strengths off the table (and I realize the Titans did that, and it didn’t pan out).

If that doesn’t happen, it could be a long day for Buffalo. I agree w/ those who have said that it’s the most exciting match-up of the weekend. It’s really a coin flip kind of game.

Oh No, it sounds like someone is projecting again because their own team is a complete dumpster of rotting garbage. 🤣

  44. Super Bowl LV will be between the Buccaneers and Ravens. It ties into real life events that shouldn’t need to be explained.

  45. The Ravens @ Bills and Rams @ Packer will be the most interesting games.

Weather will not be a factor in Green Bay. About 30 degrees and no snow at gametime. May be a little snow around early Saturday morning, but nothing before or during the game.

The Packers all practiced today so let’s hope the same for tomorrow. A little COVID deal with Veldheer, but hopefully all goes well from here on out.🤞✊✌

Get your popcorn ready Rams fans. TitleTown about to come into your 4K OLED.

    #GoPackGo!

  46. Ravens/Bills or Browns/Chiefs should be a Nickelodeon game. Exceptional, young QBs on all four teams that kids would enjoy watching get Slime Zone scores.

  47. Chiefs lost their last game and won the 7 previous games by no more than 4 points. If Cleveland gets their offense rolling this could be one exciting game.

I looked it up. In Brady’s Super Bowl years the Pats scoring defense was 6th, 1st, 2nd, 8th, 1st, 7th, 5th, and 15th. The last two they lost the Super Bowl. You may need to redefine what average to poor really means. He’s lucky Brees didn’t sign with Miami. Not saying he’s not a great QB, but when you havea top 5 or top 10 defense it makes it a lot easier. Brees has hardly ever had that. As you say….look it up.

  49. Is it just me? I think Brees looks terrible. Todd Bowles will know how to get after a limited Drew Brees IMO.
Can’t see Brady going out yet either

  50. The Bucs didn’t look that great vs Washington. If you can’t blow out Washington I just don’t see how you expect them to beat the Saints.

Speaking as a Chiefs fan, your Browns scare me a bit.

  52. If the Bucs improved from week 1 to week 9, then why did they lose to the Saints by 11 in week 1 and then lose to the Saints by 35 in Tampa in week 9? I think somebody is delusional.

  53. The Packers’ defense has played better in recent weeks, an injured QB won’t do anything significant against them. Packers 31 Rams 10

  54. The gusty winds in Buffalo will be more of a factor than snow showers or the temperature.
