Troy Aikman: Doug Pederson wanted Jalen Hurts, Jeffrey Lurie wanted Carson Wentz

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie’s decision to fire coach Doug Pederson may have stemmed from a difference of opinion about who should be the team’s starting quarterback going forward.

Pederson thinks Jalen Hurts gives the Eagles the best chance to win, and Lurie wants to salvage Carson Wentz, according to Troy Aikman, who said on Michael Irvin’s podcast that he spoke to Pederson after Pederson was fired.

I reached out to Doug Pederson yesterday when I heard the news,” Aikman said. “What I gathered it came down to was a difference of opinion as to how they’re moving forward at the quarterback position, is what I sensed. Jeff Lurie, the owner, has paid a lot of money to Carson Wentz, and they’re on the hook with him, they can’t get out of that contract right away. It’s my belief that Doug Pederson felt that Jalen Hurts is probably the quarterback going forward. And how does that mesh?”

Aikman said Pederson’s firing was “complex” and not just about the quarterback position. But Wentz’s regression, and the emergence of Hurts, is a major issue the Eagles have to address going forward. And if Lurie and Pederson weren’t on the same page, one of them was going to have to go. And it wasn’t going to be the owner.

  1. So that’s why Peterson took Hurts out of the last game because that was his man ? hhhhmmmmmmmm

  2. So it falls on Lurie and Howie fir drafting Hurts in the 2nd round…plain and simple.

  3. So the emergence of a second round pick qb is a major issue but according to reports Lurie hasn’t even considered firing Howie Roseman the man responsible for drafting Hurts, really sounds like Pederson was fired for Rosemans poor decisions.

  4. If Pederson doesn’t get a HC position I’d love to see him come to the Phins to take over the OC position.

  5. Lurie’s arrogance may get the best of him on this one. If Wentz starts next year under a new coach and fails then who can Lurie blame other than the man in the mirror? No way a good coach wants to walk into that situation.

  6. idk about this. if doug was done with carson why would he have went up to carson before the game after the saints and told him the qb position had not been decided for the season and especiallu not for next season?

  7. I love Jalen Hurts as a person and team leader but I’m sorry, he is not a long term solution for the Eagles or any other NFL team as a starting QB.

  8. So why did Peterson pull Hurts out of the last game?

If it was to lose so he could stick it to the owner, Peterson should get a Pete Rose ban.

  9. Gathered and sense rarely equates to truth . Let’s hear it from Mr. Peterson

  10. So let me get this straight. Lurie wanted Wentz, Pederson wanted Hurts, so far I understand. They can’t come to a compromise and Pederson is let go. Not the best idea in my mind but it happens. Here is where, at least to me, the water gets really muddy. Shortly after Perderson is fired, actually worse than that, the first news blurb in their quest for a new coach says the Eagles reached out to, or interviewed Lincoln Riley. For those who do not follow college ball he just happens to be Hurt’s coach in college. Now I remember hearing how Wentz was hurt when Hurts was drafted, how he lost confidence, how pissed he was about being benched, how he wanted a trade. Assuming at least a modicum of truth to those accounts, why in all of this green Earth would you even come close to Riley knowing that there is a good possibility that the QB you are favoring will not be too happy?

  11. This is like the time my wife and I got in a fight over whether we should eat warm sushi or those spinning sausages at the gas station.

    We were both wrong.

  12. Green Bay also drafted a young athletic QB when they already had a good veteran. They fired their coach, and now that veteran QB is playing better than ever and the team is winning, big time. The problem was obviously the coach. Maybe the problem in Philly was the coach, too, and the owner was smart enough to realize that

  13. Lurie is wrong on this one. Hurts is the direction the league is headed in.

    Wentz is washed up.

  14. You would think they’d have figured this out before using a 2nd rounder on another QB.

  15. So the HC got fired for using his “assets” in a way he best feels wins football games?

    Got it.

  16. Given most of the history of the Eagles, Pederson lucked out winning a Super Bowl and Lurie appears to rank right up there with Jerry Jones as a General Manager deciding about players and lineups !! Hilarious unless you happen to be a long suffering Eagles fan (which I am not).

  17. So you throw away a good coach for a QB am that was never really that good? Makes sense.

  18. Pederson wanted Hurts…the owner wanted Wentz….Coach J. Peterman catalog shown the door.

  19. I have always felt Wentz was overrated. He’s never won a superbowl. All he’s really done is get hurt at strategic times. He just hasn’t shown that much in terms of the only statistic that counts – winning.

As to what has been done about it? I don’t know who’s right, because Hurts hasn’t shown that much either. The only thing I know is that they had a really good team (meaning the other 21 starters) when they won it all, and now that team’s nowhere near as good. No discernible plan for righting the ship, either.

  20. Move along people, nothing to see here, just like any business, the owner does what he wants and the employees fall into line or they are unemployed. The return on investment has not been good on Wentz, the owner is trying to salvage what he can. Seems too late to me.

  21. I think Doug may have wanted that conversation, to be kept private. Either way meddling owners don’t usually win big, I.e. Dallas. Inept GM’s don’t help either.

They definitely fired the wrong guy. Doug will win elsewhere.

  22. Feel bad for the Eagles fans. Wentz didnt win that super bowl and its doubtful he ever will win one. I’d still like to know who made the decision to pull Hurts in the last game.

  23. But Lurie is fine with Roseman drafting Hurts in the second? Ok that makes no sense at all, and that’s the problem all the coaches are fall guys for Howie who always gets a free pass. I love the Eagles, no idea who would want to inherit this toxic management mess.

  24. I also believe Doug wanted to keep Foles over Wentz after the 2018-19 season. The year after the SB, where Nick took the team Carson couldn’t win with to the brink of the NFCCG.

  25. So in other words Lurie wants to lose or finish around .500 until Wentz is gone. Guess Lurie is still under the “Wentz was a MVP candidate before he got hurt! So he can be that good again!” delusion.
Lurie obviously forced Doug to bench Hurts in the 4th quarter to not show up fragile Wentz. Knowing all this now it puts Doug as the best coaching candidate.

  26. The 2020 season has obviously been a challenge and in many ways an outlier, and I don’t believe anyone should have their performance judged without taking the state of the full team into consideration.

However, we’ve heard reports that Wentz doesn’t have the locker room. If that’s true, it makes it really tough for him to lead the team.

But, also – Pederson needs to understand the economics of giving a QB a big contract. And, by the way, I’m sure Lurie agreed to the Wentz contract based on input from his football people – the fact that they’re questioning it so soon after the contract was signed to me shows a good measure of dysfunction in the Eagles organization.

Pederson may’ve wanted Hurts, but Wentz has to be the guy in Philly for at least another year or two. That’s the situation that Pederson helped make.

Also – they should’ve had Wentz dressed for week 17. That was ridiculous.

  27. I figured this boiled down to a choice between Wentz and Pedersen. Now only time will tell if this was the correct choice.

  28. Worst possible news for Eagles fans. The fact that keeping Wentz is a requirement for a new coach can’t be what they were hoping to hear.

  29. Dysfunctional. Wentz played poorly and got benched. If he’s any good he shot practice in the off season and earn his starting spit, like all pro athletes have to. Just becay you are paid first mean you can stop trying and stop producing.

  30. If there were any lingering doubts about the problem in Philadelphia, surely they now have been removed.

  31. Blame Howie. He drafted Hurts when the eagles had needs everywhere else. Howie needs to go. Not doug.

  32. The REAL reason was GM Howie Roseman. His constant back drafts, bad contracts, and failure to bring in free agents that actually pan out how made coaching the Eagles a harder job then needed. Then add Howie & Jeff’s content meddling with Doug’s staff was too much. Doug had zero power to have the coaches he wanted and the players he needed to succeed. With Howies EPIC failures Doug knew this team wasn’t going to succeed as long as Howie has free run to do anything he wants without the owner holding him accountable for ALL his mistakes…

The good news for Howie and Jeff is w/o Doug WHEN Howie screws this #6 pick in the draft up, he’ll have another shot at a top 5 pick next year as well..

  33. Well the real issue is why draft Hurts. It’s not like in green bay where Rodgers is over 30 and possibly looked on the decline last year so they looked towards the future but the eagles by drafting hurts at the time were already saying Wentz wasnt their future

  34. In other news, water is wet and the sky is blue. They are going to trade Hurts to get Carson weapons. It’s the wrong decision. But they are the Iggles so…in the words of Nelson Muntz, “Ha ha.”

  35. Hopefully Doug lands in a good spot – with this report, he stuck to his guns. Heck of a guy. Wentz was awful and sounds like a diva more and more each day.

    ———-
I’d bet any money they dont trade Hurts. 1st off he was a late 2nd round pick which means only 4 years not a 5 year contract and their already 1 year into the contract with Hurts not improving his stock from when he was drafted last yr. That means at best Hurts has late 3rd round value and isn’t going to bring back any real “weapons” in a deal.

  37. It’s going to be very difficult for Wentz to ever “lead” this team again. For one, Doug was very popular among his players and I’m sure some of them are upset that Wentz may be the reason he’s gone. Secondly, it was obvious that Hurts won over the locker room and commanded more respect than Wentz. Assuming Hurts isn’t traded, I don’t know how they could possible co-exist on the same team. And finally, if Hurts is indeed traded, it would only upset more players who favor Hurts. It’s a no-win situation. The only way Carson has a chance of winning back that locker room is to perform like the Wentz of 2017. Which would seem impossible with the lack of talent on this team.

  38. Lets see went had 82tds and 22 ints 2017-2019 was the number one red zone passer from 2016-2019

even in 2018 and 2019 he had a combined 49 tds and 14 ints

  39. Strawberries are awesome. They are sweet, delicious and versatile. When they are good, they are good. But, when they are bad, they are BAD. They tend to bruise & spoil easily. They need to be handled delicately or they will not last. And when they do spoil, there is nothing you can do with them Wentz is a strawberry.

  40. This is why you shouldn’t draft an FCS quarterback high in the draft. The jump from FCS to the NFL is big to suceed . Also Wentz sounds like he is hard headed and hard to coach.

  41. Of course this is Pederson’s take because he’s not going to say “I screwed up”. The Eagles have been slowly imploding since Frank Reich left. This year it all finally came toppling down. Meanwhile, Frank Reich just went 11-5 with a washed up QB and nearly upset the Bills in round 1. This is not a coincidence.

  42. NFC East team owners sure seem to be suffering from “shiny toy syndrome”, where their personal focus on a player distorts team development. Lurie with Wentz, Snyder with Haskins, Jones with Elliott/Prescott, and maybe we’ll yet see that with Daniel Jones in NY.

It makes drafting Hurts make a lot less sense. You don’t draft a QB that high unless you expect them to compete for starter time. If it was Wentz or bust, they could have waited and gotten a strong backup later.

  43. Pederson’s play calling still baffles me. When the offensive line was toast, he still kept calling long developing drop back pass plays. Wentz was begging for roll outs and screen plays. When asked at a press conference earlier in the season why all the drop backs when your line can’t hold up, wentz said you’ll have to ask the coach. And when Wentz finally starts making a connection with Travis Fugal, you stop playing him.

Then when Hurts gets in, you totally change your play calling.

There seems to be a lot more behind the scenes.

  44. Vikes will get Wentz, fire zimmer and hire craig bohl or Chris kliemann to show how an offense is actually supposed to be ran.

  45. I think whatever team we’re a fan of, we mostly agree: Lurie picked Wentz over Pederson, for various reasons. I can understand both positions. Doug was done with Carson and had won the SB without him. Carson was headstrong and struggled. Doug wanted to patch the team around Hurts, and Lurie thought they needed more of a rebuild. And Lurie is married to Roseman for whatever reason.

  46. More evidence that we are now saddled with a meddlesome owner and lapdog GM. Because why wouldn’t we want to replicatethe Snyder/Allen, Jerry Jones/Steven Jones model. Going to a rough next several years.

  47. If it’s true that Lurie wants Wentz and not Hurts to start, then it seems unlikely that Lurie will land Lincoln Riley.

  48. Shanahan wanted Cousins
    Snyder wanted RG III

    Seen this movie before

Ironically, Wentz and RG III were both drafted second overall.

Philadelphia is now the official dumpster fire of the NFC East and that’s saying something with Jerry and McCarthy in the same division.

  49. How could Lurie watch Wentz the past couple years and come away so convinced he was the answer he’d freak out by Hurts getting a look late in a lost season? If anything you’d think he would have seen it as an opportunity for Wentz to avoid extra punishment and get fully healthy because if your ARE sold on Wentz your biggest hope is that he’s just been constantly a bit banged up which has thrown off his play.

  50. Eagles are a mess right now, they need to restart the whole thing. Get a new GM, along with the new coach, show Howie the door and start over. But Jerry Lurie is pretending to be Jerry Krause, with “Organizations win championships.” That everything is in place with Howie Roseman. How many championships did the Bulls win without Jordan? How is the “Gold Standard” looking without DeFilipo and Riech and a bunch of old overpaid players? Owners don’t win anything, it’s the people that they put in place that win, and when owners have pets like Howie Roseman or George Allen or Jack Easterby, or when players like Jason Peters, or Carson Wentz, or Dez Bryant, or Ezekiel Elliot can bypass the coach to go to the owner, you got major, major problems.

  51. Lurie’s devotion should be to his fan base, not the conniving ivy league punk who never put on a pair of shoulder pads. Why listen to the football guys who know something about actually playing the game? Roseman will drag this franchise down even further if Lurie doesn’t wake up.

  52. Wentz played like a franchise QB when the Eagles had Frank Reich as OC. As soon as Reich left, Wentz played terribly.

Pederson and Wentz are NOT a good match. One had to go. Personally, I’d keep the coach that won the Super Bowl, but Laurie obviously thought differently.

In what world do all pro athletes have to earn their starting spot? Players draft position as well as their contract are huge factors in determining starting spots on every team. What your describing stops happening after high school football as even scholarships are a determining factor in who starts in college.

  54. The team had a lot of holes when they drafted Hurts. Perhaps a decent OL or secondary player was on the board?

  55. “Pederson’s play calling still baffles me. When the offensive line was toast, he still kept calling long developing drop back pass plays.”
    ___________

And not just long developing plays but plays with no real checkdown option. Wentz isn’t good at knowing when to give up on plays so having no checkdown entices him into risky throws because he sees throwing the ball away as a failure. Their playcalls frequently fed into his worst tendencies when you’d have thought they’d be going for the opposite effect.

    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Craig Bohl? Wyoming won two games this year. One win was against a team that finished the season 5-6 and the other win was against a team that finished 0-6.

Chris kliemann? He finished the year 4-6. That included a 5 games losing streak to close out the season. Need me to remind you of how Iowa State destroyed them 45-0? Even 0-9 Kansas was able to put up 22 points against Iowa State, but the Chris Klieman”s KSU team, notta.

Yeah, they’ll teach someone how an offense is suppose to be ran.

  57. I am sure this will be a headline soon because it just came across WIP radio in Philly.

Howie Roseman set the game day rosters each week and decided who was active and who was inactive. Doug had no say in who his players were going to be on game day. HOWIE IS THE PROBLEM JEFF! WAKE UP!

  58. Shades of Little Danny Snyder. The correct answer is…neither Wentz nor Hurts is a legit franchise QB. So maybe the actual plan is to tank.

  59. Now the Eagles want to talk with Cowboys OC Kellen Moore about their head coaching position. Kellen should do like Nancy Reagan and “Just Say No.”

  60. I hope the Eagles start Hurts and think he’s going to be something spectacular in the NFL, 5-11 look good on them

  61. Why silent on Pederson and Justin Jefferson?

When reporters were talking to Eagles scouts on how could they whiff on Justin Jefferson and pass on him. The scouts said that Jefferson was their highest ranked wide receiver available when the Eagles picked. So they asked then why didn’t the Eagles pick him? The scouts said that the coaching staff overruled them. That they wanted speed. Interview ended.

I thought it interesting that they didn’t say management. They said coaching staff. I haven’t heard of anyone asking for more on that.

Just everyone blaming Howie for everything. Don’t get me wrong. I have a long list of issues with Howie decisions. I just don’t think Pederson was clean on the blame for this disaster.

Look up their records and success while having Wentz under center, they are good in their own built up systems with their own coaches.

  63. All these people going “HUH wait a minute, Pederson pulled Hurts from da game!!”

Ever stop to think that maybe, just maybe, that call was made by someone above his head? And maybe he disagreed with it, which is why he got canned?

  64. If belichick couldn’t get rid of Tom Brady for Jimmy G, you really think Dougie’s going to get a quarterback that started 4 games and played average football ?
