Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes got the news he was looking for after the team’s practice on Friday.

Head coach Andy Reid told reporters that Mahomes was going to be evaluated by doctors after taking part in their final on-field work of the week. Word that Mahomes would be addressing the media came a short time later and that signaled he’d been cleared to play this Sunday.

Players in the concussion protocol don’t meet with reporters and Mahomes confirmed that he’s no longer in the protocol.

“Luckily enough, I haven’t had any symptoms and I’m able to play,” Mahomes said, via Nate Taylor of TheAthletic.com.

Mahomes has also been dealing with a toe injury that he picked up early in last week’s win, but that’s not going to keep him from starting his third straight conference title game.

  1. Mahomes is back. Good news for those of us that like great football. But there goes Aaron’s last chance to win the Super Bowl. Or keep his insurance gig. Bad news for us pakkers fans.

  2. Great news! Looking forward to seeing two great teams battle for a trip to the Super Bowl!

  3. Buffalo 34 KC 26, mahomes picked off on the last drive and Josh Allen kneels for the win on the arrowhead

  4. Good news, I wanna see both teams at full strength to get the best game. Don’t want a cheap Bills win, if they win I want no excuses.

But for Mahomes sake he better hope he was truthful in disclosing his symptoms lol. I know as a player I don’t blame him, but he’s gotta be careful, another big hit if something happens like last week, bad news for everyone.

  5. My team is KC but I’m really excited for Buffalo and their fans. Clearly hoping for a KC win but I remember 2 years ago just getting to the Championship game for the 1st time, since I was alive. Congrats Bills, enjoy it!

  6. Cue the conspiracy theorists who will claim the NFL overlooked their own rules. *Yawn

  7. I don’t think anyone reasonably thought that the Chiefs/ NFL weren’t going to clear Mahomes. No way they’re losing their cash cow for the ratings

  8. How many other players this year were knocked silly like he was and played again a week later? Anybody know any others?

  9. mahomes dont need 7 days….
    .
browns are lucky they didnt cut him in half…both sides would have healed and the chiefs would have 2 superbowl MVP QBs.
    .
    Good luck Bufallo.

  10. I wager (for entertainment purposes only) only when I have a very strong opinion. IMO, Mahomes hasn’t played his best game this year. I think he hangs a 40 burger on the overmatched but talented Bills squad. I also think Matthieu will pick Allen at a critical point in this game.

    Chefs 44, Bills 28

  11. This is very good news. The best meeting the best with the best playing. Hoping for a great game. GO BILLS!

They don’t rely on just players saying what their symptoms were, otherwise players would regularly be back after a week. To be cleared, they have cognitive tests that have to match their pre-season baseline assessments. There may be flexibility or a willingness from the neurologist to give them some wiggle room (but I doubt it), but its not really in the player’s or team’s control. In theory, its not within the League’s control either, but it’d be naive to think that they wouldn’t consider applying pressure.

  13. He wasn’t just a little off. The guy was knocked senseless. He couldn’t stand up. No way was he really cleared.

  14. Can we all agree he’s healthy????? Good then no excuses for his 3 picks – Bills going away, BUF 41 – KC 17. Sorry haters, we’re back

  15. Some players who are barely touched are in concussion protocol for weeks. But Mchomes who was clearly dazed and wobbly is just fine already! Geez God works in mysterious ways!

  16. It’s pretty clear that Bills D is gonna go after him hard. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a few roughing the passer calls early in the 1st Q, where Bills get to him with what would be considered a clean tackle/sack/hit in the 90’s.

Before you are “back”, dont you actually have to be somewhere first? Unless you are talking about being back to 0-4 in SB’s

  18. Yup we we were 0-4 in those SB’s so unless you’re one of three teams to beat us, we probably beat you on the way there. Sorry 4 straight appearances, though frustrating not to win one, is impressive. If you don’t realize that you’re a clown.
