Some in the league think Josh Allen has caught Patrick Mahomes

On Sunday, two of the best quarterbacks of all time will meet in Green Bay. Then, two of the best young quarterbacks in the NFL will meet in Kansas City.

Most would say that Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes currently is the best in the game. Some who know the game and who study it carefully are wondering whether Bills quarterback Josh Allen has caught up with Mahomes.

Simms and I separately have been hearing talk along those lines based on Allen’s incredible improvement in 2020. And the point often made is this: There’s a difference when it comes to seeing Allen perform in person.

Size, speed, mobility, accuracy. Incredible velocity when he throws. Uncanny ability to sprint one way and throw the other.

Mahomes continues to have unquestioned talent, and he’ll continue to be among the best in the game for as long as he plays. But Allen has reached that level, too, and he’s still not even 25.

Allen has a chance to persuade plenty of others that he’s caught Mahomes on Sunday. Even if the Bills lose, seeing them on the same field on the same day with a Super Bowl berth on the line will provide a clear apples-to-apples comparison between two of the finest young quarterbacks to ever play the game.

  1. Mahomes is one of my favorite non-Bills players to watch, and one of the most exciting players in the league.

But as of today, I wouldn’t trade Allen for him. I think Allen has a more complete skill set, a higher ceiling and is just better for Buffalo overall.

Overall, the original trade in that draft worked out great for both teams.

  2. Nope. That’s not taking anything away from Allen, but he simply isn’t at the level as Mahomes. Nobody is right now. Mahomes is the MVP. What is Mahomes, like 25-1 in his last 26 games he’s started?

  3. Some in the league think that Rogers has caught up to Brady as the G.O.A.T…
Rogers, who can’t seem to get past the NFc Conference game and has only been in the Super Bowl once…
Both Mannings, Montana, Ackman, and other are closer to being the GOwt than Rogers…
Jim kelly’s 4 consecutive super bowl appearances makes kelly more of a GoAT than Rogers!

  4. On any given Sunday Allen can outplay Mahomes and vice-versa. From my point of view Allen, Mahomes. Mayfield, Watson, and Herbert are the new QB stars of the NFL.

  5. Meanwhile, those who don’t study the game think it’s laughable that Josh Allen is even in the same conversation.
So who should we believe, the experts and players around the league?
Or The experts who speak with so much conviction that there is not even the possibility they could be wrong about Allen being garbage.
I think the top hundred players voted by the players is the most accurate assessment of how good somebody is

  6. When the Bills win on Sunday, the nation will finally come around to the notion that Allen is a superstar. He’s arrived.

  7. I remember a lot of talk after Mahomes first season that he was a one hit wonder and wouldn’t be nearly as good going forward. In this, his 3rd full season, he’s rightfully acknowledged as possibly the best player in the game.

I’m not saying that Allen isn’t playing a a very high level, because he is, but let’s wait a minute before granting him a status that Mahomes had to earn over more than one campaign.

  8. Quick who was only quarterback that Aaron Rodgers has ever beaten in a conference title game? Caleb Hanie… That is THE ONLY quarterback Rodgers has ever beaten in a conference title game… let that sink in for a moment

  9. Allen BETTER perform, no excuses Sunday. Too many are anointed a guy that has 67 TDs and 31 ints in 3 seasons vs Mahomes who has 114 TD and 24 ints lol. WTF is wrong with people? Mahomes is on another planet, doubling Allens TDs with 50% less TDS!!!!! Allen shows promise but his #s aren’t even in the same solar system. Come on, don’t paint a target on the kid’s back.

  10. Josh Allen is one of the finest young quarterbacks to ever play the game?
Just how big is that group? There are a few in Canton.

  11. Show me one GM that would chose Josh Allen over Mahommes if the opportunity arose. That’s not a slight on Allen but he’s had one good year and Mahommes has been consistent since his first game in Denver. Also you act like there is some huge age discrepancy. Mahommes is about a year older. So it’s not like comparing Josh Allen’s youth with Brady’s age. We’ll see Sunday. If Allen is better then go Bills!

  12. Allen has significantly improved, but to claim he has reached Mahomes’ level is absurd. A Mahomes “bad” game, as rare as that is, is an Allen average game–Mahomes is that good.

  13. Their talents are virtually identical, with the difference being Allen being bigger and stronger. Gimme #17.

  14. I hope he is close to Mahomes, Mahomes is proven at every level, regular season, playoffs and SB. With Allen having 2 wins now in the playoffs he’s getting there. But Watson and Jackson can’t even get in the conversation until they win multiple playoff games.. Mahomes needs someone to push him, hopefully it’s a great game Sunday. As a Chiefs fan of course I’m rooting for KC, but for it to possibly be Buffalo too, I’m excited for the AFC.

  15. Allen has definitely improved each year in the league. He’s come such a long way in 3 seasons. His rookie season, he was project with great potential. The bills were rebuilding their entire roster, salary cap strapped from the previous regime. He had no offensive line and his top 2 WRs were Kelvin Benjamin and Zay Jones. His second season, they improved the talent around him, he also put in the work in the offseason to get better. What people fail to realize outside of Buffalo is, his receivers led the league in drops with 41. Nobody ever wants to mention that, which led to a poor “passer rating”. This previous offseason, he kept putting in the work and now everybody is seeing how great he can be. He had an MVP like season and the Allen vs Mahomes battle is the new Manning vs Brady. Go Bills!

  16. While I think Josh has turned the corner this year, Mahomes has an MVP, Super Bowl MPV. Don’t think he’s close at this moment. Things can change if Allen goes all the way.

    Mahomes
38-8 record as a starter, MVP, Super Bowl MVP
    6 Fourth Quarter Comebacks, 7 Game-Winning Drives
One Postseason 4th Quarter Comeback, One Postseason Game-Winning Drive
    114 TDs – 24 Ints
    Post Season Record: 5-1
    Other Notables:
Mahomes has 1,729 passing yards in six postseason starts for the Chiefs, a franchise record. Mahomes has 14 touchdown passes in the postseason, the third most by a quarterback in his first four seasons in league history

    Allen:
    28-15 record as a starter
    8 Fourth Quarter Comebacks, 11 Game-Winning Drives
    Post Season Record: 2-1
    67 TDs – 31 Ints

  17. It’s close. You also have to consider the weapons, which creates a “chicken v the egg” conundrum. Did Mahomes make Tyreek and Kelse elite, or vice versa.

  18. If you believe Josh Allen has caught Patrick Mahomes, then I’d say you have jumped in to one to many tables…

  19. just going off the team he played in his last game and the couple of match ups that both teams had with them. The Ravens have a really good secondary, but Pat torches them all the time. Josh struggles every time he plays them and needs his defense to win the game or keep them close. Josh and Pat are only close if they are playing the Jets

Gotcha! The NFL made for TV show that most of the players don’t even participate in, is the true measuring stick of greatness. Well, they should just dispose of the MVP and AllPro awards.

You’re looking at the entire career which I get but the truth is that the article says caught up to. It doesn’t say that he’s always been as good.

Judging by this season…. it’s not a crazy notion to think he has nearly caught up. It’s been one year but if the stats are as close next year then yeah you can say that he may have caught up to him. MVP? Shouldn’t matter. Any other year and he’d probably win it. He just happens to be in a year Rodgers did so much.

Super Bowls? Don’t matter. Not for this discussion bc there are many variables and things once can’t predict to win a super bowl. That would be like saying Marino wasn’t great no he didn’t win one, or Steve young wasn’t great bc he only won 1.

He’s one notch below mahomes right now but that’s it

This is Allen’s 3rd season in the league and has average 30.67 touchdowns/season while Mahomes’ average is 30 touchdowns in 4 seasons. His scoring numbers are very close.

  23. People have a hard time accepting anything positive about josh Allen. You won’t find a better leader in the league and he’s changed scouting the qb position forever. Now people will have to take into account that players
    Can be coached up.

This is a largely subjective argument, but in no world is Troy Aikman considered the GOAT no matter how many trophies he has. His stats are pedestrian by today’s standards and look at the hogs he got to work behind his entire career which also paved the way for Emmitt Smith’s inflated stats. If anything, that Dallas line deserves the most credit for those 3 Super Bowls. And the Vikings for allowing themselves to be fleeced for Herschel Walker.

  25. Now imagine if JA had Tyreek and Kelce his first three seasons.. Not discounting Mahomes at ALL, but it’s not like he hasn’t had it kush with the stud playmakers around him. Look at just ONE season with Diggs! This season is the truest side by side comparison so far.

  26. just going off the team he played in his last game and the couple of match ups that both teams had with them. The Ravens have a really good secondary, but Pat torches them all the time. Josh struggles every time he plays them and needs his defense to win the game or keep them close. Josh and Pat are only close if they are playing the Jets

By that logic wouldn’t we say josh is better since he beat the two teams the Chiefs lost to? Come one bro, use your head

  27. As a Bills fan, its been great watching Josh blossom this year and pull the team to the championship game. That said, I don’t think he’s ‘caught’ Mahonmes yet.

The sample size of his W-L record is still too small to make that judgement. And Patrick is Patrick–he’s shown he can win in the ultimate situations, while Josh has yet to do so.

Ask that question after Sunday, however, and my assessment may change!

  28. Winning superbowls is obviously very important, but in the ultimate team game, where there are 21 other starting players not to mention the other 31 guys, it shouldnt be the true measuring stick of greatness.

  29. I’ve watched a lot of Bills games. Seems to me his accuracy is still a big issue, but he has so much talent around him, and he’s so good at moving the ball, that he gets 2nd and 3rd chances to make plays, and Diggs has been spectacular. When on one drive he gets 3 chances to throw the ball deep, he’s going to hit on one of them. He’s a really really good player, but I don’y see hime in Mahomes class when it comes to throwing the ball accurately downfield. That said, he is dangerous running the ball in ways that scare me more than Lamar Jackson. He’s tough to bring down like Ben used to be. And he’s learned to be patient with the ball while improving his accuracy. Watching his career is kind of a blueprint on how to develop a young QB.

Rodgers does not play against the other teams’ offense. This makes no sense. He beat a Bears vaunted Defense that year.

Not until he wins a Super Bowl.
    _____________________________________
That’s why the NFL is called a team sport. You can have one of the best QB’s in the league, but if the team is not running on all cylinders you can fall short. Mahomes stepped into one of the best situations possible as a rookie. He got to spend time learning from one of the most knowledgeable QB’s in the game… a field general in Alex Smith. Allen got thrown into the fire as a rookie… no learning, no Alex Smith. Mahomes had Andy Reid, one of the best Coaches in the league… Allen got a rookie Coach in McDermott who was still learning himself. Mahomes had a very good Offensive line to work behind with top of the line weapons in Kelce, Watkins, Hill and a veteran RB in Williams. Allen had rookies and a pieced together offensive line with Kelvin Benjamin, Zay Jones and an aging Clay/McCoy in the backfield. If Allen started off in the same fashion as Mahomes it might have not taken him till year 3 to stand out and shine.

  32. As a Ravens fan there were narratives like this after Lamar’s MVP season. Rightfully so people said he needs to stack seasons together playing at a high level before he deserves to be in that conversation. Now, I will say the same about Allen. Mahomes has done it, all the promising new guys need to do it too.

  33. 14 minutes after the 2018 draft: Biggest losers, the Bills, reached and got a horrible quarterback. Just shows you need 3 years to assess a draft.

  34. I like Allen think he has promise but he doesn’t have the accolades Patrick does. This is a lot like the Lamar Jackson takes last year that he had surpassed Patrick and was now the new version of what a qb is and and should play like. A year later Jackson has more question marks about his future than ever before and mahomes just keeps winning.

  35. Not even close. I’ve only seen Mahomes play like Allen did last week like once since he’s been starting. Why do people do this to themselves. Just enjoy it. He’s the best Qb I’ve ever seen.

  36. I’m a Bills fan and read the forums. Not even Bills fans think this. They think he’s on a trajectory for it and most would not trade him for Mahomes, but few think he’s “at Mahomes level” right now.

  37. Josh has developed into QB stardom this season but he has some things to accomplish before being compared to Mahomes. I have no doubt of a prolonged success but a bit premature for any comparisons. I guess this is similar to some already calling Mahomes the next GOAT, premature again!

  38. Allen is a good QB and I see him at or getting to a Roethlisberger lvl of player which is really good. Mahomes is a once in a generation type player Like Montana, Johnny Unitas, or Brady. Teams can with either but if my team was picking between the two it would be Mahomes without a second thought

  39. Mahomes has freakish arm talent without all the other physical attributes that Allen has.

  40. Also – if Bills agree Allen is due for a $501 million extension this off-season. I’m waiting.

  41. If the Colts had a QB with a live arm, we wouldn’t even be entertaining this foolishness.

  42. Josh is great, but no, Mahomes is having arguably greatest start to a career in NFL history. Here’s a stat, not counting the Browns game in which he left early, a Mahomes-led offense has never scored less than 30 points in a playoff game (5). Allen has put up 19, 27, and 10 (granted the 10 could’ve been higher if Lamar didn’t get knocked out).

  43. Patrick Mahomes first and only start of his rookie year, he quarterbacked the 2nd team offense loaded with other rookies and 2nd/3rd team backups to a win, in the freezing cold and snow at Mile High in Denver.

And he came off the bench after sitting for almost a full quarter to lead a 4th quarter comeback, after the third team QB allowed the lead to evaporate.

Reid was resting his starters that year (again) before the playoffs. There wasn’t any Kelce or Hill or Watkins on the field to play with.

Denver was playing most of their starters and still had a very stout defense.

His 1st game as a rookie, he looked like the 2nd coming of John Elway.

He’s looked like a phenom every game ever since. No doubts about him what-so-ever. Ever.

  44. I don’t think you can really say one QB is “better” than another, but Allen has surely improved.

The significance of which, to me, is that every NFL draft season we hear over and over that “accuracy isn’t something a QB can improve” which has always seemed like nonsense to me. Almost anything can improve with practice and effort.

Allen’s accuracy was constantly cited as his weakness.

  45. Too Bad Elway couldn’t figure out how to spot QB talent. Mahomes vs Allen vs Herbert vs Carr man the AFC west could of been fun to watch. then again even if Denver drafted Allen the development might not of been the same, much better coaching staff in Buffalo.

  46. The Ravens offense out-played the Bills offense last week. The Bills defense, combined with stupid mistakes by Jackson and misses from the best kicker in football is why the Ravens lost.

Don’t get me wrong. Allen is going to be a top QB for years to come, but to compare him to Mahomes is premature, at best.

  47. I sure hope Patrick sees takes like this. He will show whats what on Sunday. Allen is turning into a great QB. For sure. But to put him Patrick’s level is hilarious and wrong. Let’s see him win an MVP or a SB, then we can start talking. Patrick’s won both.

  48. I can see the argument of that for the next 10 years you may take Allen over Mahomes based on the trajectory of improvement he has made and his overall game.

Statistically, they are identical at this point, so I don’t see how someone could be so appalled at the notion that Allen is as good as Mahomes.

    ——————

What, the Bills games from 2019? Allen’s accuracy is up to almost 70% now. The accuracy issues are clearly in the past. He’s also ridiculously clutch on 3rd downs and in the red zone. The stats back it up. Again, almost 70% accurate. The inaccuracy narrative is dead as a door nail. Yes, he overthrew some targets vs Baltimore last week. Into the swirling wind that even Justin Tucker couldn’t negotiate. Context matters

  50. Seems like the football talking heads are looking to take Patrick Mahomes off the top of the mountain after only placing him there a season ago. Playoff fodder…who knows…but I think Allen has watched a lot of film on Patrick Mahomes and tries to mirror a lot of things Mahomes does. As they say imitation is the best complement.

  51. Josh Allen beat the Raiders…With emphasis on beat.

Are you touched lol? Mahomes has played 3 seasons 46 games vs 44 for Allen.

Mahomes averages 2.5 tds a game with .5 ints per game.
Allen averages 1.5 tds a game with .7 ints per game.

    I hope you’re clowning.

Here are some QBS first full 3 years, come back down to Earth

    Player TDS INTS
    Mahomes 114 23
    Luck 86 43
    Peyton 85 58
    Rivers 77 35
    Eli 71 55
    Allen 67 31

  53. Not sure about that but he’s at least close. And don’t look now, but I think Herbert is hurtling toward the same territory. There are things I saw from him this year that just knocked me out. And then there’s Lawrence to look forward to…

It’s kind of incredible. Just when it was looking like the age of QB greats was starting to wane, we get this surge of guys who are already stunning. In his own way, I’d include Lamar Jackson in that group too. A group of really remarkable players developing now.

The Ravens offense out-played the Bills offense last week.

    ==============

I understand what you’re saying, but I think only scoring 3 points disqualifies an offense from being able to make this claim. Even the missed field goals wouldn’t have moved that needle.

  55. Josh is improving but until he has a 50 TDs & 5k yds in a season, an MVP, a SB ring and a SB MVP, he still has a way to go before he can be mentioned in the same sentence as Mahomes.

  56. Its hard to point out any 3 year stretch of qb play that would exceed this level for any qb ever and if he wins another superbowl he may legit rank as a top 10 qb of all time in year 4.

  57. Josh Allen has clearly elevated to the same level as Mahomie. But he needs a championship. I hope he beats down the Chefs this weekend and I will be pulling for the Bills. In the next couple years I have a feeling Justin Herbert will be in this conversation too. Its great that we have a bunch of new young QBs to replace the outgoing old codgers…

  58. Patrick Mahomes beat the Bills…With emphasis on beat.

Let’s act like this is that far fetched a concept.

  59. There’s no QB who plays like Mahomes. He’s surgical in his passes. He plays like a wizard out there. Allen is good but he benefits from the Bills’ formidable defense.

  60. Having Travis kelsey and Tyreek Hill as your one two go to receivers makes any QBs job easy. Remove those two, I wonder where KC would be.

  61. Allen looks promising but Mahomes has DONE it and it’s not just a look. Besides, Mahomes is like the Harlem Globetrotter’s of QB’ing. It’s just flat ridiculous sometimes the things he does.

  62. And some people think Tom Brady is better than Aaron Rodgers.

There is a word for those people; wrong.

  63. I hope Mahomes-Allen becomes the next Manning-Brady.

The League needs that. As much as it ever has.

  64. Bills fan here…Allen has not caught Mahomes! I personally don’t think he will catch Mahomes…but I’d be thrilled for Allen to continue proving me wrong year after year. He has gotten considerably better each season. If he somehow takes yet another leap…then we legit are talking Mahomes level.

  65. Focusing on Mahomes vs. an “improving” Allen ignores their respective weaponry. Mahomes has one of the fastest people alive in Tyreek Hill, and a generational talent at tight-ed. Throw Mahomes in, and that’s three supernaturals on one squad. Nobody can effectively defeat that so far.

And Allen…look at who he’s throwing to this year compared to last. Stephon Diggs legit A-list skills man, and Beasley the perennial 3rd-down cleanup artist that all genuinely good teams seem to have on their roster (Brady still missing Edelman).

The one common thing in this crop of oncoming talent is they all have turbochargers. Zero flat-footers. And overall these are tiny QB’s to the norm; Allen and Herbert only genuine bigs in current crop – everyone else average-sized or a shorty. Strange.

    ——

Hmmm. Let’s look at a better comparison – Brady vs. Jordan. Accomplishments in your chosen field matter. It’s why you play the games.

Sorry, but Rodgers isn’t even in the conversation.

Obviously he can take a hit better.
    —————-
This is quite overlooked though most times it equates to no big deal. Allen suffered a severely sprained/separated left shoulder in the Raiders game. He played with a brace against the Covid Titans and then a short week against the Chiefs. Never complained once or brought it up. Mahomes’ toe has been the most publicized digit in recent history. Almost as if their getting all the excuses ready.

  68. “Rogers, who can’t seem to get past the NFc Conference game and has only been in the Super Bowl once…
Both Mannings, Montana, Ackman, and other are closer to being the GOwt than Rogers…”

The GOAT doesn’t mean the guy with the most rings. Brady and Montana are kind of the GOAT 1 and 2 in my book. But Rodgers can do things with the football that Brady has never been able to do. Put Rodgers on the PATS for the same years Brady was there, in that division, with those squads and he may have more rings than Brady in GB or Brady in DET or elsewhere. Rodgers owns the highest career QB rating in the league. That tells you something. He just completed a season in which is rating was the highest of any QB since . . . . you guessed it, Rodgers in 2011. Brady had the miserable AFC East and some great defenses that Rodgers hasn’t had. Except for the year he won the ring.

  69. I do think the 4 best NFL QB’s are the four that are playing this Sunday. Allen is improving, but the race is far from over. I remember the Brady vs. Manning comparisons. In a year or two, Trevor Lawrence will be in the conversation. In five years, the league might belong to Lawrence. Enjoy these guys while you can. And wait til you see Arch Manning. Lol. Archie’s grandson. Isn’t football awesome!

  70. When the Bills win on Sunday, the nation will finally come around to the notion that Allen is a superstar. He’s arrived.
    ___________

I’ll take “Bad predictions that didn’t age well for $500”, Alex.
