Texans interviewed Josh McCown for head coach

The Texans’ bizarre offseason has taken another strange turn, as the team has interviewed quarterback Josh McCown, who was on their active roster at the end of the season.

The Texans announced the McCown interview today.

McCown has done some high school coaching, but to say he’s lacking in the typical qualifications for an NFL head coach would be a major understatement. He hasn’t even been so much as a quality control coach in the NFL or college football.

If McCown were to be hired, it is believed that he would be the first player to go directly from being an active player to an NFL head coach since Norm Van Brocklin, who was the Eagles’ quarterback in 1960 and the Vikings’ head coach in 1961.

That the Texans would even consider McCown indicates either that Jack Easterby is making another weird power play in the front office, or that McCown developed a close bond with quarterback Deshaun Watson, and the Texans think hiring McCown would placate Watson, who is so unhappy with the team it has fueled widespread speculation that he’ll hold out and demand a trade.

The Texans also announced that they have interviewed Jim Caldwell for their head coaching vacancy.

Eric Bienemey is a puppet to Andy Reid, has nothing to do with race… calm down.

  3. They’re hiring either Bienemy or Frazier – both are in the playoffs right now. They have to stay in the news somehow. After Sunday we’ll know their actual hire.

  4. I think McCown’s a holy roller like the clown in charge there. Ok, if they hire McCown I know Watson will want out. Darnold and this and next year’s two.

  5. Love me some Josh McCown but…. head coach??? Maybe start with him as QB coach and see how that goes?

For Texans fans’ sake I hope this is being overblown a bit and was in reality more of a “courtesy interview,” or at least an interview for a lesser position.

  6. John Lynch had no NFL management experience when he took the 49ers GM job. Took them to the Super Bowl if I remember correctly…

And being a good position coach or OC/DC has NO RELEVANCE to being a head coach. See: Anthony Lynn, Jay Gruden, Jason Garrett, Todd Bowles, Chuck Pagano, Mike Pettine, Mike McAdoo, etc.

If McCown is good head coaching material, then you go get him. All this “hate” is just people AFRAID of failing.

  7. How come nobody makes fun of Jim Caldwell for being an open Christian? Is it because he’s bald and Tebow has a beautiful head of hair?

  8. To be fair, no amount of coaching experience compares to knowledge gained through playing QB.

There is no substitute for being under center.

  9. If I’m Eric Bieniemy, I’m not getting anywhere near this dumpster fire of an organization. Just wow.

  10. Eric Bienemy has to jump through all kinds of hoops just to get an interview. Josh McCown…. not so much.

  11. or that McCown developed a close bond with quarterback Deshaun Watson

Unless I’m missing something, when have those two ever been in the same room with each other?

  12. McCown was a QB for The Browns in 2015. with Manziel. 3-13. This is a step down from that Josh just don’t.

  13. So all you folks who were questioning why ownership should listen to Deshaun Watson, how does it feel to find out that he’s actually the competent one?

  14. Starting to sound like no one wants the job. When I say starting I mean when BOB traded away their future.

  15. I’m available for an interview on Monday. I coached at the elementary school level. I’m THE ideal candidate for this job.

  16. I had to read that headline twice. I though it was Josh McDaniels and was thinking maybe that would be a good hire.

This one? They have to be joking.

  17. They clearly only want these ultra-religious Evangelicals in the leadership roles. I’m sure McCown is a good guy and has a promising future as a coach – but it’s about having a guy that will chant and support the cultish zealotry that McNair and Easterby have attempted to turn the organization into.

This will create a weirder culture than Dabo.

I’m available Sunday afternoon for an interview. Everybody else gets one.

Hmmm so youd rather interview for a job than watch football? Your better than me

  19. I think he would do a good job. he has experience with many teams and coaches. He has seen it all and almost everywhere

  20. You have to understand the owner and Easterby. I’m not even talking about the way they run the football team. These are too very odd characters. You kind of have to be a little different to even want this job. Players that want out aren’t necessarily concerned with football stuff. They just want to be around normal people.

  21. I see all the funny comments but actually this guy will be a great one very soon. Laugh if you want to but just remember my name because I told you so.

  22. Eric Bienemey is a puppet to Andy Reid, has nothing to do with race… calm down.

Not saying it has to do with race, but Matt Nagy was in the same position under Reid with 10 years less experience and he got a shot with Chicago, and Chicago hasn’t had an offense since. Go figure…..

Because no one makes fun of Tebow for being an open Christian. We make fun of him because he isn’t a very good football player. Not at this level. Baseball player either for that matter. I couldn’t care less about his beliefs. Not on the football field.

  24. after all is in place they can move to Guyana and practice their form of religious football, that should work out well

  25. first of heard of Caldwell being strongly religious. That is the way to do it.. you can be open about it without stuffing it down folks throats (Tebow)

Very interesting take – was Andy Reid helping him when he was an excellent Assistant Head Coach in Minnesota? That would be weird/????

EB is not even the primary play caller for the offense in KC. When he did call plays as a college OC, he and the HC were fired after two seasons.

I think it has less to do with race and more about checkered pasts. Including groping a woman.

  29. Very interesting take – was Andy Reid helping him when he was an excellent Assistant Head Coach in Minnesota? That would be weird/????

    ———————————-

He was the running backs coach for the Vikings. His RB was…Adrian Peterson. He would have made any coach look excellent. Stop making this a race issue. Going out of your way to manufacture racism is just as divisive as actually being racist.

  30. And everyone hates Watson for wanting out of Houston….Seems like the franchise decision makers are closing their eyes and pointing at names on a sheet of paper to interview. hahahhaha

  31. I have an interview Monday!! I just my friend “Bigfoot” will let me
borrow his Unicorn to fly to Houston.

  32. Next year at NRG Stadium:
“Come on fans. Let’s hear it for your Houston Junior High School Texans”
What a bunch of maroons. They keep going like this they’ll be interviewing Pop Warner staff.

  33. Bill O’Brien was an excellent football coach, and believe me, I’m no fan of his. So now he’s gone, and everything is fixed, right? LMAO

If only Eric Bienemey was as white as McCown, he might have been interviewed.

If only Eric Bieniemy had as clean a record (including violence against women) as McCown, he could get a head coaching job. People, look it up, he’s not a guy you are handing the head coaching job to.

  35. Would be nice if the reason why Bienemy is passed over again and again was actually explained. So much $$$ at stake, it can’t actually be as simple as racist stupidity but they sure are trying hard to make it look like it.

  36. I mean he actually played in the NFL and is experienced enough to be an offensive coordinator as much as Kellen Moore and Byron Leftwich which makes him way more qualified to have the job than Freddie Kitchens was when his only qualification was being Baker Mayfields buddy who knew how to semi competently read Todd Haley’s playbook a couple games.

In fact I can name a few current coaches he’s more qualified than. Definitely wouldn’t be a worse hire than when the Jets hired Adam Gase or the Cardinals hired a losing college coach or when the Bengals hired whoever Zac Taylor is.
