Mike Mayock: I was disappointed in the productivity of our rookies

The Raiders selected seven players for their 2020 draft class, the team’s first since relocating to Las Vegas.

Apparently General Manager Mike Mayock wasn’t thrilled with the results of his own picks.

“I was disappointed in the productivity of our rookies,” Mayock said in an interview with Eddie Paskal of the Raiders’ website. “I’ll be the first one to admit that. You can make excuses. You can have a conversation why.”

Part of that dissatisfaction likely comes from Las Vegas sending third-round pick Lynn Bowden to the Dolphins before he ever played a snap.

But the team’s No. 12 overall pick, Henry Ruggs, was one of the least productive rookie wide receivers in 2020. In 13 games, Ruggs caught 26 passes for 452 yards with two touchdowns — most notably a last-second 46-yard touchdown to beat the Jets in Week 13. He also took nine carries for 49 yards.

“Henry Ruggs, I think, is who he is. I’m not disappointed in Henry. I think Henry’s got to get better,” Mayock said. “We knew how fast he is, but he’s got to get stronger and he’s got to get in and out of his breaks better. You’ve got to feel him coming out of his breaks more for him to get to the next level. And I think he will. But we’ve got a long-term view on Henry Ruggs.”

Selected at No. 19 overall, Damon Arnette
was limited to nine games due to injuries and a stint on the reserve/COVID-19 list. He had a pair of passes defensed and no interceptions as a rookie.

“In training camp, prior to injury, he was playing really well. We were excited about Damon Arnette. He’s instinctive, tough, and fast,” Mayock said. “He’s got to take care of business in the offseason. Nutrition, strength coach, consistency of a day-to-day program.”

Third-round pick Bryan Edwards caught 11 passes for 193 yards with one touchdown in 12 games. Third-round pick Tanner Muse didn’t play all year due to a toe injury. Fourth-round pick John Simpson appeared in seven games, starting two on the offensive line. And fourth-round pick Amik Robertson appeared in eight games, seeing snaps at corner and on special teams.

But Mayock was in charge of all the selections and he took accountability for the choices.

“I’ve got to do a better job. We drafted some guys last year who were position changes, and maybe that wasn’t fair in a COVID year,” Mayock said. “We drafted a guy in the third round that was a quarterback/slot that we wanted to become a running back [and traded him].

“I kind of look back and say, that’s probably on me. I kind of look back and say, that’s probably on me. Are we asking too much of these kids from a productivity perspective in year 1 in a COVID year when they’re changing positions? So I think the entire building has got to be accountable. That’s me, the personnel side, the coaching side and the players.”

  1. Y1 was awful. All the buzz towards Edwards only for him to be invisible. Nelly definitely forced less snaps, but Gruden moronically had him on the bench in the red zone (an area they sucked in) and on some plays would have Ingold split out wide, while the 6’3” receiver was standing on the sidelines.

  2. Those Alabama receivers look so great when running past all those high school defensive backs.
They’re not all gonna be Amari Cooper or Julio Jones.
Ruggs has great straight-ahead speed. Jefferson in Minnesota was by far the best rookie receiver.

  3. Ruggs wouldn’t be an issue except they had the choice of every WR available. I hope he is a quick study because you don’t want him finally progressing and then he is a free agent.

  4. I think Bryan Edwards is a stud. He’s not just a catch and fall down guy. He can make people miss and break tackles. He has good speed too. He’s probably the toughest guy on the team. Arnette is talented, too, but has to stay healthy. Amik Robertson needs playing time. They have a new defensive coordinator and I think that will make a world of difference. He’s not going to make bad players play better, but maybe he’ll get the best players on the field, and put them in a better position. More blitzes and stunts. When you don’t out-man your opponent, you better manufacture pressure.

  5. So Ruggs is exactly who we thought he was?? ..but YOU decided to REACHHHHHH for him over Justin Jefferson, CeeDee Lamb, Jerry Jeudy, and Brandon Aiyuk.

    CLOWN!!!

  6. “I was disappointed in the productivity of our rookies” said no good GM ever.

  7. Mayock’s drafts have been horrible. Clellin Ferrell had 2 sacks in 2020. Total bust. Mayock is like Millen. Thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room.

  8. We should have picked Lamb instead of Ruggs, Lamb was most people’s #1 WR (he was mine too). I also had Antoine Winfield Jr. as a 1st round pick and wish we would have taken him at #19 instead of Arnette or moved back to the mid-late 20s to grab him. Mayock lit two our two 3rd rounders on fire by trading Bowden and then Tanner Muse didn’t even make the team. He isn’t going to fit into the NFL. We need to stop just drafting Clemson players, part of some of their success in college is playing with other great college players. I loved Amik Robertson and was glad we grabbed him but he’s a nickel/slot CB and we already had Joyner (ugh) and Nevin Lawson in that role this year. Next year hopefully Robertson and Isaiah Johnson take a step forward next year. Mayock needs to draft for elite talent and stop reaching for character guys. I want nasty dudes on this team like the Raiders of old. Our defense, really our whole team, really likes toughness and an attitude.

We need to stop just drafting Clemson players, part of some of their success in college is playing with other great college players. The best pick Mayock made was Bryan Edwards, I had a early 2nd round grade on him and he fell because of his injury but he’s a stud. I loved Amik Robertson and was glad we grabbed him but he’s a nickel/slot CB and we already had Joyner (ugh) and Nevin Lawson in that role this year. 10. Well stop drafting players just because they play at Alabama or Clemson over talented players from other schools like Ferrell over Josh Allen the better pass rusher or Ruggs over Jefferson or Lamb the blame falls on the shot callers….

  11. Anyone expecting an undersized WR to put up huge numbers right away hasn’t followed football much. Ruggs was always raw and in time can be really good. He’s not awful like he’s made out to be. Edwards is super talented as well. I still think they can turn out to be great players. Unfortunately Arnette doesn’t seem to be legit and Amik is tiny and played against crap competition and looked like a cFL player in his very limited snaps.

  12. what did we get for Mack? getting out from a REDICULOUS salary my idiot friend! tell us wise one, what has da bears GOTTEN for it? DERRRRRR

  13. Gms and coaches like this do no one a favor when they think they’re the smartest guys on draft day . Stop it with thinking you can take a borderline quarterback and make him into an elite running back or the like .

This team has been horrible, with your high picks get the most talented people on the board..and then the obsession with Clemson and Alabama ..maybe he should stick to TV, it was a job where his draft didn’t have real consequences and he could blow smoke all day talking and talking

  14. Your disappointed at their productivity but yet you can’t touch on that maybe that would be the coaching staffs responsibility to improve the players and make sure they are improving each week.

  15. Well let’s see the…..

Raiders and Ruggs won 8 games
Broncos and Jeudy won 5 games
Vikings and Jefferson won 7 games
Cowboys and Lamb won 6 games
Niners and Aiyuk won 6 games

They those other wr really made a huge impact LMAO!! with mostly garbage yardage as their teams were getting destroyed. Sad how little these haters know about football.

So ultimately, they got what for Khalil Mack?…

    ——————————————————

    Josh Jacob’s and Arnette

Remind me how many sacks mack has in the playoffs? 0

  17. Maxx Crosby out-performed Khalil Mack Last year And Josh Jacobs was the best running back in the league but they gave the Offensive Rookie of the Year award to someone else who didn’t deserve it. Plenty of other good draft picks Cleveland Pharrell actually looked great last year was a very destructive force in the backfield all the time his rookie year might not have been great but you don’t judge someone by just their first year unless you’re Hey Biased Raider hater. Kolton Miller great left tackle
