Are Raiders plotting to trade Derek Carr, pursue Deshaun Watson?

The quarterback carousel is spinning, and one of the riders has a perpetual scowl on his face.

Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that “several NFL insiders” expect the Raiders to field calls regarding a potential trade of quarterback Derek Carr. Bonsignore suggests that the expected demand for Carr could result in a three-team trade that would result in the Raiders trading Carr and acquiring quarterback Deshaun Watson from the Texans. (Presumably, the Texans don’t want Derek Carr, perhaps because of its experience with his brother, David.)

The story suggests that the Raiders could get two first-round picks for Carr. That seems a little high, frankly.

The sourcing for the report seems confusing, to say the least. Are “NFL insiders” coaches, team executives, media members, agents, players, or some combination of those categories? (As used in the industry, the term “NFL Insider” typically refers to someone in the media.) In Carr’s case, “insiders” suggest the possibility of a three-team deal. And an “NFL Insider” applied the potential price tag of two first-round picks onto the transaction.

Frankly, this feels like an effort — either gratuitous or subtly requested by the team — to kick-start a potential trade market for Carr, and to introduce the concept of the Raiders being a potential suitor for Watson. After all, G.M. Mike Mayock said last week that Carr had an “exceptional” year, while also repeating the notion that the team is always looking to upgrade at every position.

Carr was good last year, but he wasn’t a Pro Bowler. Carr finished 14th in completions, 11th in yardage, 11th in touchdowns. He ranked 10th in passer rating, 10th in completion percentage, and he finished in a three-way tie for fifth in average per attempt.

As to the original nugget reported by Bonsignore, that the Raiders are expected to field calls regarding a potential trade for Carr, that’s not a surprise. In the offseason, General Managers always talk and always inquire about the availability of players, regardless of whether the player officially is on the trade market. Given that the Raiders have seem to have a perpetual attitude of ambivalence about Carr, any team looking for a quarterback would be wise to see whether the Raiders are willing to move him and what the Raiders would want.

If the notion that Carr is available takes root, maybe the calls will come more quickly and more frequently. Maybe the Raiders will get an offer that they won’t want to refuse for Carr. Regardless of whether that leads to making a run at Watson, the Raiders possibly regard Carr’s fringe top-10 performance of 2020 as an opportunity to sell high.

  1. Raiders couldn’t pay Mack, they certainly couldn’t pay Watson. As stated above, this is all smoke and mirrors to dump Carr and go with Mariota. Yawn.

  2. If you don’t have a solid starting QB, stats like 14th in completions, 11th in yardage, 11th in touchdowns, 10th in passer rating, 10th in completion percentage, and fifth in average per attempt is probably good enough to justify giving up two 1st round picks. At least a 1st and a 2nd.

And no, this is not Mark Davis.

  3. Some of the stuff sounds right. We know Watson is probably moving. Many people assume the Raiders are moving on from Carr, but that move has seemed obvious for three years, so maybe it’s not happening. Maybe the three way deal will be Carr going to Houston. Watson going to Jacksonville. The Raiders acquiring the #1 pick and drafting Trevor Lawrence.

  4. He’s in the Kirk Cousins mold. 4k passer 25+ TD guy, so he will always have a market. He’s always going to be in that top 10-15 range so teams could do worse.
If I were the Texans you could potentially fleece the Raiders here and still have a competent QB after it’s all said and done.
Let’s not forget he’s got that little Christian tattoo on his write, that has to make Easterby moister than an Oyster.

  5. You know passing has become easy when 2 of the least desirable starters are Jared Goff and Derek Carr, who have put up numbers that’d make them top QBs in previous eras. Now teams look to dump them.

  6. Anyone paying more than a 2nd round pick for carr should be fired. The funny thing is that when the raiders had the draft capital to trade for a QB they didn’t pull the trigger now they are drafting in the middle of the pack and don’t have enough to make the trade. If Goeff is worth 2 firsts and a 3rd then Watson is worth far more.

  7. Man that dig on David was too cold & too funny!! Plus I doubt Dereks eyeliner would go over well in Texas.

Raiders couldn’t pay Mack, they certainly couldn’t pay Watson.

    —————–

That doesn’t make sense. With the move the Vegas, the Raiders franchise value has doubled since the Mack trade. And the issue in 2017 wasn’t salary, it was signing bonus – being able to put $90m in cash into escrow. They don’t need to do that with Watson. Houston has already paid his signing bonus.

The Raiders (or any other team that trades for him) would only be responsible for his base salary. In 2021 that is $10.54m. Carr, by contrast, is $19.525m. His extension doesn’t kick in until 2022.

  9. The Raiders will NOT get 2-1s for Derek Carr. Maybe a 1 & a 3 depending on where he goes. The question becomes who will play QB? They can’t afford to pay Watson even if a trade could be made. Surely not Mariotta? I said it before and I will say it again! There was a reason Gruden was run out of Tampa! PERSONNEL DECISIONS!!!!!!

  10. Just a quick reminder that not too long ago on December 13th the Bears smoked Deshaun Watson and the Texans 36-7. Watson was sacked 7 times while Trubisky threw 3 scores. Few weeks ago Jared Goff won a road playoff game. Just fir the record when those comments about Watson being worth “way more” come up.,

  11. So Watson would green light a deal to go to one of the only other places where the owner is in love with one person and makes irrational decisions at his discretion (the other place being the Eagles)? Also, one of the few places with a worse defense than the dumpster fire he’s trying to leave.

  12. Man my team has mitch friggen tru-bust-ski and no way would want to give up 2 picks for carr.

  13. Makes a lot of sense.

Much like Howie Roseman with the Eagles, the last thing Mike Mayock needs/wants to do is be scrutinized for more failed draft picks.

I respect the heck of out Mayock’s analysis and career accomplishments but clearly he doesn’t belong in that job. He’s the reason fans like me think we can do a better job than quite a few NFL GMs.

  14. 2022 1st and two players = Carr in Navy and Orange enjoying some deep dish

  15. if Watson went to the raiders, fans get 2 watson mahomes games every year minimum… maybe meeting in the playoffs…
    .
that could be some great football for years

  16. With the results teams are getting with Carr, Prescott, Ryan, Wentz, Watson and the like, I don’t know why anyone would want to sell the farm for any of them.

The best bets seem to be guys you draft or guys you pick up for value who turn out to be just what you needed (Tannehill, Fitzpatrick).

This “middle class” of really expensive “name” QBs just doesn’t seem to be worth the pain. Draft and develop or sign a journeyman. If that doesn’t do it, draft again.

  17. I’m a Raiders fan, and unlike most Raiders fans, I’m occasionally critical of the team. Especially when they do the absurd like bringing a HC off TV with an outrageous contract. A HC that doesn’t work at all with the defense.
If I were Lawrence and found I might be going to the Raiders, I’d return to college before letting that happen.
Carr’s got a lousy record, 47-63. Gruden, since winning the SB with Tony Dungy’s team, is 64-80 … also 16 games below .500. He’s the one who needs to go into exile, except MD isn’t going to eat $70M.

  18. I doubt the Raiders would ever do it, but I bet Belicheck could do good things with Carr.

Yet a Matt Stafford trade commands 2-1s, a 3rd, and a Jared Goff?

  20. I could be wrong, but I just don’t see it happening. Carr has improved every year under Gruden, and most importantly the defense is the major problem. That said, sounds like a very Raider thing to do, lol.

Seriously though, they have a very young secondary, and most of the defensive roster just played together in their first year together with the Covid restrictions. Injury’s certainly hurt, but so did Gunther’s poor scheme’s and inability to adjust. More experience, and hopefully a better defensive coach should improve them a bit. What they really need is a few playmakers and depth on defense. That alone should get them to the playoffs, now advancing in the playoffs may take more time and/or playmakers, but clearly it was the defense that held this team back for the most part.

On offense, they are pretty good. Again injury’s hurt pretty bad as the starting O-line played very little together, so depth again, but they showed they can put up points. It’s on the coaches and Carr to be less predictable, and defiantly get Ruggs up to speed. And use your player’s ability better. I mean Waller, Ruggs, Renfrow, Jacobs, that’s a lot of talent. Hell, line up Ruggs and Rico Gafford more often, two of the fastest guys in the NFL, how do you stop that? If done correctly, you don’t. Carr is not the problem. He may not be the guy that is going to lead you by himself to the playoffs, but if everything around him is solid, he can get the job done. And the defense blow’s it time and time again.

  21. Three way trades just are not common in the NFL.

Recently, the Bills made the Sammy Watkins deals with the Eagles and Rams, but those were two separate transactions. Eric Dickerson to the Colts, Cornelius Bennett to the Bills, and a lot of picks to the Rams. The Herschel Walker deal was actually a three way, with the Chargers getting the Vikings then-running back.

Point is, this is all CGI (it’s 2021, they don’t use smoke and mirrors anymore). No one is giving two 1s for Derek Carr, and no one is doing a three way dance.

  22. Also, why does every player somehow get linked to be traded with the Raiders, only for it to rarely ever happen?

  23. I can’t see the Raiders trading a franchise QB to downgrade the position with Watson. Not likely at all.

  24. We’ve all heard of some Quarterbacks being “Coach destroyers “(for lack of a better term ) .Coach Jon Gruden , on the other hand is a Quarterback destroyer.! Watson should decline this trade if proposed.

  25. If a team was really willing to give up 2 first round pick for Carr , why wouldn’t that team just add an extra first rounder for Watson – and deal with the Texans directly .

  26. This wouldn’t be the “Raider Way”. Raiders only go big after super fast receivers with no hands.

  27. I still believe Derek Carr is too streaky to be a reliable QB. You win more games with a QB that doesn’t run hot & cold in the same series. I think the Raiders need to move on from Carr. He’s is not a franchise QB. I really doubt any team is going to trade 2 first round picks for Carr. If the Raiders want to move on, they may have to take what is offered. If anyone is dumb enough to offer 2 first round pick for Carr, I’d jump on that with both feet. I think it’s time for the Raiders to move on without Carr.

  28. The poor, poor Broncos if the Raiders pull this off and potentially having to face Watson, Mahomes, and Herbert twice every year.

  29. NFL insiders, eh?

Derek Carr was, by all metrics, a top-10 QB last year. So that makes him extremely valuable — either to trade or keep.

No one seems to be in a rush to trade Deshaun Watson. By the time he starts to sit out, it will be too late for the Texans to trade anyway as all the QB needy teams will have paid or drafted their new QB.

I predict, Carr stays in Vegas. Watson trapped in Houston. Mariota traded Washington.

  30. Same old story every year … Carr getting traded.
Seriously why would the Raiders want a 4-12 QB when Carr has the NFL record for the most comeback victories since joining the league?
Defense is the Raiders problem and QB.

  31. Two 1st’s for Carr???

    BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!

Who in their right mind would think….wait, what? Mark Davis is calling?

    BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!

  32. The Raiders scored 50 more points than Houston. The Raiders were the only team to beat a Mahomes lead KC team (and should have beat them twice, but the defense cost them). They need to take their money, get better at defense and remain healthy. That’s what cost them games this year. They lost WR Tyrell Williams before the season began (and Henry Ruggs was slow coming of a freak injury while moving). They lost two OL and had others banged up or on the covid list. They had numerous injuries on defense and people out with covid. The Raiders are very close to being very good. The problem isn’t the offense. The defense needs to be the priority for improvement. They need D, another T and G as Icognito is old and will be coming off injury, and WR, RB is what they should be looking for.

  33. Two first round picks for Carr seems a bit high, but realistically he has very similar numbers to Matt Stafford and is three years younger. Maybe the price paid by the Rams for Stafford bumps all QBs value.

  34. Does Watson want to be locked into a division with Mahomes and Herbert? With a coach that is the only coach to miss playoffs each of the last three years and still have a job?

  35. I would rather see Dallas go after Carr at his salary than extend Dak. Dallas should see if the Texans would like to trade for Dak, and picks, for Watson, if not, non-exclusive tag. You could even let him walk, get comp picks, and get Carr. Maybe Gallup, who is a FA next year, and picks.

  36. I’ll never know why the Rams didn’t go after Watson… they must have, secretly.
    Surely!

So the raiders get #1 ovr (Lawrence), the Jags get a top 5 QB from a divisional rival, and the Texans get Derek Carr?

You are aware that Bill O’Brien is no longer Houston’s GM, yes?

  38. Carr’s not the problem. Sure he will never be a top 5 QB but build a great D to handle Mahommes and a competent Offense around Derek and watch us win the AFC West.
    Chasing Watson is fool’s gold.

  39. As a Raiders fan I want to keep Carr. He’s great for Grudens system

The huge huge reason the Raiders were 8-8 was the awful defense, one of the worst all time in club history. How the Raiders even got to 8 wins with such a woeful defense is a miracle.

IF Bradley can get the Raiders defense to even middle of the pack then the Raiders will make the playoffs next year

  40. Maybe this year will be the year teams realize it’s sometimes better to take your chances with a Rookie QB instead of giving a quarter of your salary cap to one player if he is truly not a top 5 QB and doom your team to being average.

  41. Now think what would happen if the QB’s switched teams. Watson gets 6 TD’s. Trubisky throws 5 picks.

Trade Carr and Brown (who hasn’t done much for them anyways and no dead money). Bam! Suddenly have the money to pay Watson (whose extension money extension doesn’t kick in until 2022). Tell me again how they can’t afford to pay.

  43. I don’t trust the Raiders with draft picks. Don’t trust Gruden with qbs he acquires.

  44. According to the Raider faithful, Carr is not the problem. The O-line is the problem, if so, then Watson won’t improve that.

  45. Nobody ever mentions that the Rams gave up the 2 first round picks so the Lions would pick up the contract of Goeff and they wouldn’t be stuck with that contract!!

  46. I think teams saw what the Rams overpaid for Stafford and are saying, “Hey, we have a decent QB who can’t win playoff games too!” That’s why there have been so many rumors about Carr and Cousins the last few days.

    ——————————————————————————-

Actually, it’s the defense, not the O line that is the issue.

  48. Gruden Et Al have to know that Watson may be the only chance for a sure upgrade at the position in a division they will never win without an upgrade at that position. So how does LV pull if off? Carr had his best years in 2016-17 under HC Jack Del Rio, who is currently the WFT DC. Carr would fit well in DC. LV also sends along OT Trent Brown to WFT and a 6th in 2021. WFT sends there 1st,#19 overall and a 5th in 2021 to Houston. LV sends a 1st #17 to Houston, 2nd #48 to Houston and receive Watson and Houston’s 4th in 2022.
WFT get quality talent at QB and LT to compete in NFC East, and 6th in ’21. Houston adds two 1’s, a 2nd and a 5th in ’21. LV gets Watson and a ’22 4th.
If your a fan of these 3 teams, would you do that?

  49. No way this happens. But if it does Gruden will use two #1’s on guys who love football instead of the best talents.

  50. Are all these QB moves that “Brady-effect.”

Everyone now has decided (or been reminded) that having a QB-1 is the ticket to the SB?

I hate to tell them that there is only on Tom Brady

  51. Carr is good enough to win big with. Gruden is the problem .He was directly responsible for 2 losses this past season.

  52. Derek Carr is not even a starter half the time based on his game play. a #1 no freaking way. Maybe a 2 and 3.

  53. Two first round picks is way too much for Carr. And even if the raider “brain trust” got two first rounders they’d squander them.

  54. The thing about Gruden is that he HAS earned his salary – not sure Vegas happens without Gruden being the headliner and getting the Raiders some hype. Does Vegas shell out $750 mil in public funds, do fans plunk down $300m in PSL (that’s more than half of the $2B cost of the stadium – for a team coached by Jack Del Rio? or Adam Gase?

  55. Having a bad defense also puts pressure on the offense, and the starting QB. I think Carr is perfectly capable of being a steady starting QB, but if the D can’t hold a lead, or if Carr must always play from behind it affects the whole team.

Meaning, Carr isn’t the problem – fix the D.

  56. I 1000% agree.

~ Repeat after me everyone including all other GMs..”Derek Carr is a bum…he sucks. He isn’t worth a Gatorade bucket, let alone an actual draft pick. Foosball is the Debbil. Carr is turrbil. Trubisky smokes DC. Philip Rivers’ daughters are better QBs than DC.”

Watson went 4-12 with a lousy defense. He is totally worth 7 1st round picks.

Repeat after me…”Totally worth it. He’s better than Mahomes. He’s the best QB ever. 7-1st round picks is a small price to pay for 4-12.”

~Just Win, Baby! Ridin’ with DC and some defense finally (hopefully).
