Report: Raiders “very interested” in JuJu Smith-Schuster

Of the various looming free agents in Pittsburgh, one name creates the most intrigue: JuJu Smith-Schuster.

The team’s MVP in 2018 (a vote that prompted receiver Antonio Brown to force his way out of town), Smith-Schuster’s rookie deal is expiring. Absent a new contract or the franchise tag, Smith-Schuster will hit the open market on March 17.

John Clayton of 710 ESPN in Seattle said recently on 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh that the Raiders are “very interested” in signing Smith-Schuster.

Smith-Schuster could fill the Nelson Agholor role in the Las Vegas offense, as the complement to speedster Henry Ruggs. Agholor becomes a free agent, too, and his decision to rip into teammates could cause the Raiders to look elsewhere.

Smith-Schuster is a tough, hard-nosed, effective receiver. He’s not a No. 1, however. The Steelers tried that in 2019. He lacks the ability to attract double coverage. Across from someone who does, Smith-Schuster can be incredibly effective.

It will be interesting to see whether the Steelers can work something out with Smith-Schuster before he hits the market, or whether they even want to. They’ve got plenty of talented receivers who are still operating under rookie contracts.

Also, between his dancing on opposing teams’ logos and his “Browns is the Browns” comment before the playoff loss to Cleveland, the Steelers may want to move forward with guys who won’t be giving extra motivation to the teams the Steelers play.

  1. Yeah because trading for Martavis Bryant and AB worked out so well for them. Might as well go ahead and make it a trifecta of headcases.

  2. Of course they are. He’s exactly the kind of guy the Raiders would throw big money at before fizzling out and disappearing once the season starts.

  3. Let the Raiders have him. Of all the needs the Steelers have on offense, starting with the aging line, WR isn’t a priority. Besides, the Steelers have a strong track record of finding effective WRs.

  4. I’d like juju in the beginning. After Brown left, I really thought he’d take his game to the next level. He didn’t as far as to draw a number 1 receiver contract. If it’s team friendly long term I hope he does come back, but not at high expense. The WR cupboard isn’t bare by any means.

  6. He’s evolved into a tough, physical possession receiver. I question his dedication to the game.

  7. Here we go again…..Will GM’s signing Steelers receivers who were successful in Pittsburgh ever learn their lesson? Oakland/NE topping the list with AB, then there’s Maravis Bryant, Mike Wallace, Antwaan Randle El, Yancey Thigpen….Denver can have a pass on Emmanuel Sanders (even though he was way overpaid!) …..The only position that is an even worse example is Steelers Linebackers, and that list could go on forever……..

  8. We don’t have the money to pay him big. He hasn’t shown he can be a legit #1 WR, he’s more of #2. If he’s the primary option and gets a lot of double coverage (when they’re not doubling Waller), he showed the last two seasons that he can’t produce the same without AB taking the double coverages. I also would not be a fan of his off-field antics, he seems to be more about his personal brand and social media presence over winning football games (and he gives the opposing teams motivation by doing all his silly tiktok dances. Also, I think it’s about time we stop targeting former Steelers WRs. There’s a reason the Steelers are interested in letting him walk, just like with AB and Martavis, they know what they have. I trust Tomlin and Colbert to make better personnel decisions than Gruden and Mayock. I like Juju (on-field) and he’s really young but I don’t think he offers the value that other FA WRs do in this market. He doesn’t have any one elite skill in his bag, he’s kind of solid all around but we need some more speed in the WR room. Tyrell (if we keep him), Ruggs, Renfrow, Bryan Edwards, and then bring back either Agholor or sign another solid FA WR.
