Report: Seahawks management not happy with Russell Wilson

Wild Card Round - Los Angeles Rams v Seattle Seahawks

Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson showed rare candor this week when he went on the Dan Patrick Show and said, among other things, that he’s frustrated by getting hit too much and that he’s not sure if he’s available in a trade. That may have rubbed Seahawks management the wrong way.

Patrick said on his show the day after Wilson’s appearance that he heard from a source that the Seahawks aren’t happy with Wilson for taking his frustrations public.

“A source told me that the Seahawks’ management is not happy with Russell Wilson and his camp for taking this to the media,” Patrick said. “You wonder if they’re going to be able to co-exist. . . . The current situation is not sustainable. That’s what I was told.”

If Wilson isn’t happy with the Seahawks, and the Seahawks aren’t happy with Wilson, a trade would make a lot of sense. The betting odds have the Raiders and the Cowboys as the most likely destinations for Wilson. There was a time when Wilson looked like he’d be the Seahawks’ franchise quarterback for many years to come, but they may now be heading for a divorce.

  1. $39 million in dead money if he is traded plus the Seahawks would have to pay his replacement. Probably not going to happen. Russell is probably frustrated after watching Brady operate virtually untouched in the Superbowl. Can’t blame him there.

  2. Why does it seem like every year there’s some fabricated BS about Wilson, or hey there might be some truth to a lot of these things so for that why does Wilson insist on being the center of attention.

  3. He’s only gonna eat up huge cap space and probably has hit his ceiling in Seattle. No Legion of Boom and Marshawn to back him. I say they should trade him for whatever they can get, couple 1st rd picks and get a QB, maybe even straight up for Watson lol.

  4. Why doesn’t Seattle management just say something like, “We agree with Russell, he does get hit too much, and we’re going to do our best to improve that situation.”

Then it’s case closed, we all go back to work.

  5. Well, the media darling threw his teammates under the bus. Nice Teammate there.
Bet they really want to block for him now.

  6. That’s the thing with these so called modern day players, they don’t realize how good they have it and don’t know when or how to keep their mouths shut!

  7. this guy took OVERPAID money and now he is complaining they can’t sign free agents who want money as well. pathetic. same with aaron rodgers. they want big money for themselves then sit there and complain.

  8. Wilson was asked – he answered – Of course mgmt doesn’t like it – but it does not mean they are seperating.

  9. Just like with Watson, Wilson should have no say in the roster. He is being paid a huge amount of money to QB. Period.

  10. Russell Wilson became the highest paid player in the NFL 2 years ago. Now because the team will have trouble signing free agents to protect Russell on the football field and allow for more talented player acquisition. He is upset with the Seattle franchise. The NFL salary cap is transparent and the rules should have been obvious to Russell Wilson, his agent, the Seattle NFL franchise and their management. If there is not enough money to sign and keep talented teammates for Russell the blame should be on Russell, his representation and the Seattle Seahawks management. They equally share the responsibility of talent acquisition already. Russell signed a four year $140 million dollar contract and the impact that has on the salary cap should have been obvious. Talented NFL players or teammates want to be paid more than a couple of million dollars annually. Tom Brady has understood his responsibility to player acquisition and the NFL salary cap concepts for many years now!

  11. In 2020 Wilson had 2.6 seconds in the pocket, ranking 5th MOST time per pass. He was also ranked 2nd most blitzed QB in the league (behind J. Allen). What this says is that even though teams are blitzing the crap out of Seattle that Wilson STILL has a lot of time to distribute the ball. The fact that Wilson is the 3rd most sacked QB means that he isn’t getting rid of the ball to his receivers or dump-off-back. Why are HIS failings the fault of the OL?

  12. I’d be mad if I was one of his linemen that this supposed great teammate threw under the bus. There are times when Wilson holds the ball too long and, goes off script and dances around such that some of those hits are on him. He’s got two stud receivers and a decent running game too. Cry baby.

  13. This upcoming season may well be the last for Wilson in Seattle. It’s not the first time his availability has been on the table. The other thing is Pete Carroll will turn 70 this year, and could be thinking retirement. Bobby Wagner doesn’t have many years left either. A rebuild is coming in the not too distant future, and Wilson is unlikely to hang around for it.

  14. Everybody watches Tom Brady make it look so easy, then they start making excuses for themselves. It’s my OLine. It’s my coach. It’s my WR’s. Brady wins with anybody and everybody he gets thrown out on the field with. For a more realistic approach, just stop watching Tom Brady. If Brady played in Seattle, he’d come away with a clean jersey, too, and if Russell played in Tampa Bay, he’d be complaining about the Line. I’m not picking on Russell, I’m just saying there ain’t two Tom Brady’s.

  15. True franchise QBs do not get traded. This is smoke, no fire, intended to “sell papers.” Seattle needs to protect its investment better, that means drafting to bigly upgrade its O-line.

  16. 1. Russ fought hard for his massive contract and that limits his team’s resources.
    2. Seattle is not a hot free agent destination
    3. Russ is to blame for a lot of those hits because he holds the ball way too long and does not scan the field like Brady.
    4. Russ moves around to find passing lanes because of his height and runs into sacks because of it. That’s hard for a line to block for.

  17. Come on over to Washington, Russ. With our defense, you’d be a shoo-in for the Super Bowl.

  18. As a Rams fan, I don’t want him leaving the division. I like playing him 2x a season. He is exciting and always makes the games interesting.

He has a point. He takes way too many hits.

  19. Pete Carroll belives more in his offensive system than he does in Wilson. Be careful what you wish for.

  20. Did anyone actually watch Wilson play this year? He had his brilliant moments, and many completely awful moments. He threw some picks that were rookie mistakes. Part of the reason he gets sacked is he holds the ball way too long. DP calls him a hall of famer. We’ll see, but one thing I know is Wilson is no Brady.

  21. There’s a way to do things and a way not to. He chose the latter. As with half the players who have been paid millions of dollars, their ego walks thru the door well before they do.

  22. The difference between Brady’s salary and Wilson’s salary could probably upgrade the offensive line quite nicely.

  23. With all the QB drama happening this offseason, you’d think the team with one of the best QB’s would be happy where they’re at?

  24. Russell has never met a camera he doesn’t love. Even when he does his charity work, he makes sure the press is in tow with cameras….

  25. It’s not about money per se, but it is for the team. If he wants to renegotiate he can right, to lower that cap hit?

  26. Every year this story comes up, every year it proves to be meaningless offseason chatter. Wilson isn’t going anywhere. Address the o-line in the draft and/or free agency, get a little more creative in the offensive playbook. Hawks are back in another deep playoff run.

  27. The Seahawks are doing the same thing with Wilson that the Pats did with Brady–not surrounding him with enough talent and puting everything on his shoulders, year after year.

It worked during the first half of the season when he was in the MVP discussion, but wore him down as the season progressed, to the point he was a shell of himself by the playoffs.

If Brady can get what he wanted (a better environment, with more support), so can Russ.

  28. He has the longest release times (holding the ball) than any QB last year. He has an avg 40+ sacks over each year of his career. Why 47 sacks in 2020 flips him out is the real question.

  29. Dan Patrick pushes and pushes for Russell Wilson to tell us how he really feels, and then Dan Patrick gets the inside scoop about how the Seahawks really feel about Russell Wilson for telling us how he really feels. One person is winning here, and his name isn’t Russell Wilson.

  30. And Russell Wilson continues to try to find a way to be traded without looking like the bad guy. He did a similar large scale media blitz when he was negotiating for a new contract and also when he had all his friends talk about how “we need to let Russ Cook” last year. This media blitz of his is now 100% transparent.

  31. This seems to be escalating quickly. Don’t blame Russ for trying the squeaky route while watching TB12 get everything he asks for.

  32. Watson, Rogers, Wilson — yes, every single franchise quarterback is gonna be traded this offseason. It just doesn’t happen that often. It may yet turn out that Stafford is the only one this season. There is a “feeding frenzy” of stories about franchise quarterbacks being traded.

  33. I know what they could have done to prevent this, do a more concerted effort in acquiring OL talent and keeping them. I watched a game of theirs last year and almost fell out my seat when I saw Cedric O. starting. Holy cow was he awful.

Why does it seem like every year there’s some fabricated BS about Wilson, or hey there might be some truth to a lot of these things so for that why does Wilson insist on being the center of attention.

Fabricated?? Sounds like it was right from the horses mouth

  35. True franchise QB’s who get paid realize their leverage within the corporation they work for. There are not many of them, they are the face of the entire organization , they make a tremendous amount of money and they account for a massive portion of the cap. Pretty straightforward.

  36. Another crying little baby making millions in the NFL ! Stunning !!!
Starting to look very much like the NBA.

  37. Maybe the Seahawks should do the same, like complain about how they have one of the best young WRs in the game but Russ would rather run the ball instead of throwing it. Russ is selfish and childish. I think it’s funny. They should get rid of all their OL to save cap space and replace them with UFAs so they can pay Russ to run the ball.

  38. I wouldn’t be happy with him either.

Seattle signed Wilson to a 4-year,$140 million contract in 2019, making him the highest paid player in the league. Now he’s complaining.

I’m sick and tired of these players whining. If you made $100K/year (which most people do not), it would take you 1,400 years to accumulate $140 million.

    Get rid of him.

  39. The season began with an influence campaign to place Russ into the MVP race and it ends with the media chasing its tail over whether Russ is happy in Seattle.
The guy is an even better at selling himself than he is at playing quarterback, and he’s a top ten quarterback.

  40. These players have shown openly they have one loyalty and its to their wallet and legacy. Many are pissed they arent the ones in the news. Its Bardy, its Mahomes or someone in trouble.
They want fame and fortune and if they think ownership aint giving them that, adios sucker.

  41. Wilson needs to shut up and study more. he is no Brady and never will be close. Seahawks need to get a better quarterback coach for this guy because he can improve, it’s obvious.

  42. Mahomes scrambled for his life to the tune of 497 backfield yards attempting to avoid sacks in the SB. He’s not crying.

    ————————

That might also mean that he’s running around extending plays under duress.

I mean Mahomes had all day in the SB to throw…..he was also just running round dodging Buc defenders.

  44. So this is looking more and more like the beginning of a new era of football, where star players start to control their fate a bit more. I don’t have a problem with it, but I’ll say teams should take note and try to keep their star players happy.

  45. Hawks are my team, but I wish we’d traded him in his prime rather than giving him that contract. It would have been labeled idiotic at the time but he’d probably have the same gripes at whatever team he was on. Holds the ball forever. Doesn’t want to run it like he used to. And then blames the line for hits. I get that they haven’t had consistency up front but I believe a true pocket QB could have gotten them to the NFCCG a couple more times since the whole goal line fiasco. I don’t believe in curses, but trying to get ol Rusty the super ball mvp is coming back to bite them. He BELIEVES he was the MVP and we all know it was the D and the fact that Lynch made teams guess on the RPO. It’s never been the same

  46. Look at the highest paid QBs in the league and let me know when they won their SB. Bet it wasn’t during their uber high contract.

Not sure why these QBs think it’s OK to take 30% of a teams cap and think keep putting the team in the SB. Brees, Rogers, Big Ben, Wilson….all got paid and the teams never reached the SB again.

  47. This seems to be escalating quickly. Don’t blame Russ for trying the squeaky route while watching TB12 get everything he asks for.
    =====

Gotta hand it to Brady. He played his hand perfectly.

He was a free agent, and didn’t force his next team to mortgage their future to get him.

Russell has never met a camera he doesn’t love. Even when he does his charity work, he makes sure the press is in tow with cameras….

    ————————————————

I hope you understand that he’s doing charity, and the team and the NFL want that publicity because it makes THEM look good when players are active in the community.

But no, you’re right, he’s a bad guy that just won the Walter Payton award. What a jerk.

  49. Management should be unhappy with Wilson. Wilson gave the team an ultimatum just 2 years ago to make him the highest paid or else, while still under contract. I thought the team made the wrong move then & this just solidifies my stance on this. The guy supposedly got what he wanted & now 2 years later is pouting on national tv? Absolutely ridiculous.

  50. Listening to all the wanna be cap experts is hilarious.

If this it was so prohibitive to team building, teams would never re-sign their QBs.

Ask Belichick today if he wished he gave Brady $40mil.

The Seahawks aren’t winning Super Bowls right now because Pete nuked a toxic locker room, they have drafted particularly well, AND wasted significant Draft capitol on poor trades.

Those are MUCH larger problems than Russ’ cap number.

  51. Watson wants out. A trade for him straight across for Russell with post June designation is actually possible, from a fiscal point of view. Realistically, the Seahawks may not like their QB expressing his feelings to the press, but they certainly understand it and want to improve, too. This is not a festering wound.

  52. Russell Wilson should be upset with himself about being hit to much. Anyone who has played offensive line or understands offense will tell you that nobody wants to block for a QB like Wilson. Its not that Brady and Rogers just happen to have great offensive lines every year and that their teams just put more money into their offensive lines. They make there lines look good, they have the confidence to step up in the pocket and make quick decisions and have quick releases. That is who offensive lineman want to block for they are predictable and make blocking angels easier. Its hard to block when you don’t know where Wilson is. I believe it has to do with his height and decision making. He has better vision and lanes when he gets separation from the line. Raiders and Cowboys don’t have QBs to trade in return or high enough draft picks to get a QB. Look to the Jets who we have a history of trading with or Miami. If the offense is going to revolve around the running game then you don’t need to pay top dollar to a QB like Wilson. Get a QB on a rookie deal and build both sides of the Line. Send him to The jets for Darnold 2 firsts this year and a first and second this year draft.

    =====

If Russ said those things on accident, if its not how he really felt, either he or his agent would have come out and said that already.

  54. The difference between Brady’s salary and Wilson’s salary could probably upgrade the offensive line quite nicely.
    =====

    They’ve drafted 11 lineman since the 2013, including a 1st rounder, 2 2nd rounders, and a 3rd rounder.

Russ is right to complain about this one. The Seahawks have done a poor job here. His cap number has nothing to do with it.

  55. To say that you’re not happy with how many hits you’re taking is just bush league. It’s football you moron. If you can’t take the heat….
This guy has a solid reputation but now he runs the risk of entering Deshawn Watson territory of malcontent. He better be careful. That label isn’t easy to shake.

  56. he has always come off as a bit of a phony. now he is rapidly becoming one of the more unlikable characters in the NFL…..

  57. At least Seahawk fans are in good hands with Schneider. He was front and center for the Favre disaster in 2008.

IF Russ is dealt, it will be the right move, and best deal for the team.

And however ugly this could get, I don’t think the Hawks will allow Russ’ reputation to be destroyed as he is shown the door. Like him, or otherwise, he has become the new face of the Seahawk organization. 2 Super Bowls, and he is a TITAN in the PNW.

  58. Wilson would be more suited for New Orleans offense. Since he’s the shortest of the leagues QB’s (maybe 5’11”), he can’t see over his OL (6’5″ guys), so the passing lanes and blocking schemes are different. Plus when his pocket moves he runs. Brees is about the same the height, but somehow Payton has figured out how to protect him in the pocket and give him the passing lanes needed to see the field.

  59. Russell Wilson is a good not great QB. he holds the ball wayyyyyyy too long and never get his reads fast enough to make a throw. Yuo think if he took less money they can block better?

  60. Wilson took a fat contract, has put up some great numbers for having such a horrendous offensive line, and watched Brady just waltz into the NFC and win. Can’t blame him for being upset, but throwing your teammates under the bus was not a cool move. Seahawks management may not trade him this year but pretty soon they may pull the trigger due to what he just pulled.

  61. Tired of hearing everyone say he holds the ball to long and he had 2.6 seconds to throw which is top 5 in the NFL. Maybe try to understand the stat. That time includes his pocket movement and ability to not be hit as his O-line lets defenders walk through. Holding the ball to long also includes the fact he barely in reality has time to get past his first read before he has to move and escape the rush. The play is broken by then and he has to make something out of nothing. The simple truth is that the line sucks and Pete and the crew will not draft linemen high. They never have. Expecting them to pay for FA linemen will not happen either. Partly because of Wilson’s cap hit. So he can’t complain about that. He does have a point though since they won’t draft for the o-line like they care.

  62. Russell has always loved all the attention, but he is truly unhappy it might be in everybody’s best interest to trade him.

    =====

He’ll be great in the Shanahan offense.

Lots of misdirection, it will get him on the move, which is still one of his strengths at this point.

And if they can isolate Metcalf the way the Packers isolated Adams on routes, WATCH OUT

  64. Expecting them to pay for FA linemen will not happen either. Partly because of Wilson’s cap hit. So he can’t complain about that. He does have a point though since they won’t draft for the o-line like they care.
    =====

They’ve drafted 11 lineman the last 7 years.

Only 1 of them looks like he will make a significant impact on this team going forward.

  65. He’s only gonna eat up huge cap space and probably has hit his ceiling in Seattle. No Legion of Boom and Marshawn to back him. I say they should trade him for whatever they can get, couple 1st rd picks and get a QB, maybe even straight up for Watson lol.

    ________________________________________________________________

You don’t think that Watson will eat up huge cap space?

  66. So Dallas doesn’t want to pay Dak long term but they’re going to trade for an older QB with a long term deal?

  67. Dont put Brees on that list, he has played out every contract, zero extensions, zero renegotiations, no trade demands. You can say he set the market in 2012, but that was after vastly outplaying a 10 mil a year contract when lesser guys were making 80% more for years. And he left plenty of money on the table the last few years.

Not sure why these QBs think it’s OK to take 30% of a teams cap and think keep putting the team in the SB. Brees, Rogers, Big Ben, Wilson….all got paid and the teams never reached the SB again.

  68. Wilson cant play anywhere else. They wouldn’t let him do whatever he wants. Broken play king. Problem is that he broke it.

  69. Seattle GM & Owner just announced they agree with Wilson. In order to expedite his request for better protection they are cutting his salary down from $37 million to $3.7 million.

By freeing up $33.3 million the Team will not make sure Wilson’s feeling are not hurt during a Game.

  70. It looks like Patrick has found the fake story that will keep people mentioning him this offseason.

  71. Typical response to “the emporer has no clothes!”
If Seahawks management DID THEIR JOB, then Russell WIlson would be well protected.

Change the strength and conditioning staff, so the O-Line can stay healthy.

  72. Perhaps he should do some volunteer work in Sudan and see what the world is like outside of his first world bubble, complete with his first world problems. When someone has enough stacks of $100 bills to play Jenga with, that’s where my sympathy that he’s not winning more championships ends. The next time he takes a hot shower, he would do well to remember there are kids in impoverished countries who have never seen a map, much less modern plumbing. Kids who couldn’t point out the United States if you put a map in front of them. It really puts things in perspective

  73. They traded 2 1sts for a safety that can’t cover and is injured a lot plus wants to tear up his current contract for a new huge money contract…

    ..maybe Wilson has a point.

  74. Brady called his own GM shots and won a SBowl. Now RWilson, DWatson, ARodgers, etc want to do the same. Opened up a can of worms. Stay in your lane boys.

  75. I do notice that he hangs onto the ball too long at times. I heard a stat that he holds onto the ball longer than all but one QB in the league.

  76. This topic will high light the “division” within the sportsworld . . . it is as divided ad US society itself, and no ones surprised but sportsfans who want players to just play and shut-up.
They are asking what was demanded of Joe Louis – not too much has changed in 75 years

So Dallas doesn’t want to pay Dak long term but they’re going to trade for an older QB with a long term deal?

    ================

They have wanted to pay him long-term the whole time. It’s Prescott who wanted to cut the deal down from 5 years to 4, because squeezing in an additional payday after already resetting the market is more of a priority than bringing stability to the team.

They’ll regret paying him anywhere close to $35m/5; he hasn’t won anything and paydays don’t manufacture results. Prescott & Elliott’s contracts will kill this generation of the team.

  78. Would you be happy if you paid a player a significant amount of your cap and all he did was complain? Wilson has become an insufferable whiner

  79. Nothing against Wilson, but is anyone else tired of all the QB drama lately? I’m so sick of the passive aggressive comments from guys like Rodgers and Wilson. If you want a trade, ask for one. If you are unhappy with the roster, tell them that…privately. On the other side, these teams better start figuring out why so many QB’s seem unhappy. Wilson, Rodgers, Wentz, Watson, previously Goff, Stafford…it’s like at least 1/3rd of the QB’s seem dissatisfied. On the “other other” hand, it’s probably about time that teams make it abundantly clear (with force of contract, if needed) that if they are going to pay 1/5th of the salary cap to a guy every year, they are considered “almost management” and are not to express issues publicly in any way. I mean, you’re making $30 o $35 million a year…you’re the guy until you’re not. So, act like it.

  80. “overpaid money” lol

Most wins by a QB in first 9 seasons. Never a losing season. Top 10 in career stats in category after category.

Without Wilson. Seahawks are a 4-12 team – which incidentally is what I hear projected at the beginning of each season.

I’d love to see Wilson on Dallas with their OL

They let Russ cook and he started a grease fire….. Now he wants to blame someone else

    #################################################################

He was on pace to break Peyton Manning’s record for most TDs through the first half of the season.

When defenses adjusted, Seahawks coaching staff was unable to adjust.

  82. Petey and Snide both got contract extensions. It is unlikely that Seattle would fire either of them or both of them. So, if they are forced to choose, it may be Russell Wilson who would be the one to go. Dallas may well be one possible destination for Wilson because they had a hard time signing Dak Prescott and Wilson may actually be making less money than what Prescott is demanding. Vegas is less likely to be a destination because they already have Derelict Carr.

  83. Other likely destinations may be Chicago, Washington, Jacksonville or even Carolina, these are all teams looking for a quarterback. New Orleans may be interested if Brees retires. Miami is close to being a playoff contender and so they may be willing to take a chance.

Man, if only they would just let Russ cook they could have avoided this mess.
    ____________________________________________

Man, if you would’ve only watched the games this year and seen when Russ became a turnover MACHINE (MVP buh-bye!), then you’d know why Pete dialed back the O. RW also, from what I saw, looked to be having a lot of deer-in-the-headlights moments. He looked like a raw rookie at times. There were some god-awful stupid interceptions and those were on no one but HIM.

I’ve been a Seahawks fan for longer than RW’s been alive. But I can’t make excuses for the craziness that his Team 3 is spreading (and he’s not debunked) right now. Given the cap hit we’d take if he was traded, I assume he’ll stay. But I can’t say that I’d be disappointed if Watson somehow made his way to Seattle (RW->LV, Carr->Hou, Watson->Sea). I’ve got a couple #3 shirts that I don’t know if I want to wear again anytime soon. The 12 flag flies proudly here. #3? I’m not so sure he’s a team player or not. I’m a Seahawks fan first, RW fan second. Push comes to shove, #GoHawks.
