Vikings left tackle Riley Reiff missed the final game of the 2020 regular season because he was on the COVID-19 reserve list and that absence was a costly one.

Reiff was set to earn a $1 million bonus by playing at least 93.75 percent of the team’s offensive snaps, which meant he needed the team to run no more than 66 offensive plays in Week 17. They ran 74 plays in a 37-35 win over the Lions, so Reiff, who did not miss a snap prior to Week 17, was left just short of the incentive threshold.

The Vikings have found a way to get Reiff that money, however. Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports that the team has reworked Reiff’s contract to give him a $1 million signing bonus.

Reiff has started 58 games in his first four years with the Vikings. The 2021 season is the final one on his current contract and he’s set to make a base salary of $6.65 million with a $5 million roster bonus due on the third day of the new league year.

  1. Delicate David in green bay could learn a thing or two about NOT missing games from this guy.

  2. He was was a shining star on that line this year. Hopefully he survives the decrease in the salary cap and is able to play out his contract. Him with Brian O’Neil and hopefully a highly drafted lineman could really shore up that line for the Vikings.

  3. I was wondering if they would do this. Good on them for giving him that money, he earned it.

  4. Not that the Vikings are a pinnacle of team management or anything but 1 million bucks is a drop in the bucket considering a potential 10 year franchise tackle.

  5. Hopefully they can keep Reiff he was pretty darn good this year playing like he had to prove it. Their tackle situation is actually very good. It’s the guards that is a disaster

  6. I’d like to see how Reiff performed as compared to his peers at left tackle. I believe he played better in 2020 than in 2019, for sure. But, he has a large contract that could be cut for salary cap for 2021. And, once again, that O-Line was below average when it comes to pass protection.

I thought that the Vikings were “tight” on their salary cap?

A signing bonus doesn’t count against the cap.

  8. This is classy and smart. Yes, $1M with an unknown cap and existing cap issues for the Vikings is a bit of money. But what they’ve just shown the rest of the organization is that they care about the player. That will build loyalty and they’ll see that money back, in time…

  9. Let’s not forget they basically forced Reiff to take a big paycut right before the season began. That probably contributed to his good year because he played a lot better than in the previous couple seasons when he was making more money. He certainly deserved this small reward after agreeing to come back for less money.

  10. A signing bonus doesn’t count against the cap.

Yes it does. It’s just divided by the remaining years of the contract, and counts in equal portions for each year.

Yet another world class move by the Vikings….
You got that right, Alan, and with classy moves like these, I can sense 8-8 is right around the corner. 🤣

  12. Yes. Good for Reiff and our Vikings.

World Class . . . yes. Stellar offensive line play as a whole last season, super bowl wins over the years, and the list goes on . . .

  13. Just one more reason why Minnesota is such a premier destination for free agents and athletes coming out of college. We take care of our own! Add that to the opportunity to play for one of the most successful, storied franchises in NFL history, to play on one of, if not the, most talented rosters in the league, and to play for the top coaching staff in the league (including one of the most-respected head coaches in league history) – there’s no question as to why all of the players want to play here. Not to mention – the best, most passionate fans in the league!!!!

  14. Oh yeah . . . arianal, the classiest of us Viking fanboys . . . making fun of an opponent for a torn ACL or something of that nature . . .
