Where will J.J. Watt land?

He won’t play for the Texans. So where will J.J. Watt play in 2021?

The folks at PointsBet already have compiled odds. The strong favorite, at +140, is Pittsburgh.

The Packers and Buccaneers come in next at +400 each, with the Ravens at +600, and the Bears at +700.

Four teams land at +1100: Bills, Cowboys, Patriots, and Rams. Two are at +1400; they’re the Browns and Dolphins. The Titans have +1800 odds.

While the Steelers make a ton of sense, given the presence of his brothers, T.J. and Derek, Pittsburgh has a serious cap problem in 2021. Also, given the various changes coming for the Steelers (center Maurkice Pouncey retired earlier today), Watt’s likely objective to get a Super Bowl ring will be harder to achieve in Pittsburgh than in places like Green Bay (in his home state of Wisconsin) or Tampa Bay.

The Bills make plenty of sense along those lines as well, as do the Chiefs. And if Watt would like to stay in the division, how about the Colts?

Wherever Watt goes, he’ll bring not just ability but leadership and buzz. Although he’s far closer to the end than the beginning of his career, Watt can sell tickets and jerseys and create a bond with a city, as he did in Houston.

  1. J.J. Watt was a great player and he is a great person, but the Bucs should pass and concentrate on resigning their free agents.

  2. Once the Packers free up some money with getting rid of some players like Preston Smith, who is a decent player, but not for a cap number of 16 million a year. We love Preston, but this, is business.

JJ Watt is a Wisconsin boy. As a child and through his life JJ has dreamed of playing for the Green Bay Packers.

We will see what happens, but if there is anyone trying to imply that JJ doesn’t want to come to Green Bay then they are just a jealous little hater.

  3. Pittsburgh or Tampa. Mark it. No way for him to be in another AFC team which he potentially has to play against his little brother to get to super bowl. See Peyton’s case with Eli yeasr ago. That leaves Steelers or NFC contenders, Bucs, Packers and 49ers. Easy choice given no state income tax vs highest in CA, warm weather vs frozen tundra, plus playing with Brady vs Rogers or Jimmy G. My money is on Bucks.

  4. Factoring in cap space, need, and playoff potential, I’d say the most likely teams are the Ravens, Browns, Colts, and Chargers.

  5. Don’t rule out the Rams! JJ – come here if you want to play along side Aaron Donald and win the Super Bowl!

  6. Hopefully it’s not my team. I don’t care about selling jerseys, or how popular the guy is with the kids down at the local playground. I want a guy who can dominate on the defensive side of the ball, and produce when it’s all on the line come playoff time, and not just against the soft teams on the schedule. THIS GUY AIN’T IT!!

  7. Not a guy to build around but he could be a solid piece somewhere. Let’s keep in mind all his injuries and lack of production over the last 3 years. Sure the team that signs him will pretend he’s an all-pro but in reality he’s just a decent, DE/DT that can be a rotation guy. Sure his experience is great but it’s not like he ever lead Houston to anything that matters.

  8. As a Bucs fan, I’d take a flyer on him if Barrett moves on. Injuries are a concern though.

  9. I don’t see Buffalo rolling the dice on Watt who has been dealing with injury after injury 3 out of the 5 past seasons. Truth be told he’s not the player he once was and I doubt that changes.

  10. Hopefully not Pittsburgh. He’s from WI. Packers? His wife plays pro soccer in Chicago. Bears? And then there’s the other most likely contenders for the Super Bowl. Chiefs, Bucs, Bills, Ravens, Rams, Colts, blah blah blah. . .

    BROWNIES???

  11. Buffalo needs JJ Watt more than any other team ready to contend. Look around at just about any other contending team and they’ve got a leader or a pass rusher on that defense.

Buffalo is leaderless without Kyle Williams and Lorenzo Alexander, they haven’t replaced those guys.

The defensive line additions this past offseason did not produce at all.

We are a soft front seven, Jordan Poyer is the best tackler on our team.

Buffalo NEEDS JJ Watt to be our general.

All that said, I feel like he goes to Greenbay with the Wisconsin connection.

  12. I could see GB cutting Preston Smith and Kevin King to make room for him. Preston is “nice” but not the force Z is and JJ could replace that while giving the whole D a boost.

I know, I know – hurt. McCarthy’s teams were always dropping guys too due to injury. Not so under LaFleur – he’s got a better plan it seems when it comes to stretching and such.

  13. Pittsburgh, Chicago, Green Bay – In that order. Two of those cities are pretty obvious as to why. But many people forget his wife plays for the Chicago Red Stars and they have a home there also.

  14. He’s looking to cherry-pick because NFL is going all NBA-model now. He wants a ring and will select a team with the best chance to give him one.

  15. Based on pure need for the Ravens since Judon will be gone (probably Ngoukae too) it makes sense but does JJ want to is the question. He will be going to a contender though in the Ravens. Steelers as far as SB contention are a notch below the Ravens with the uncertainty on Big Ben and the O Line

  16. The only way he goes to the Steelers is if he accepts the veteran minimum for this season. Like many teams, the Steelers are already well over the estimated 2021 salary cap.

    ____________

King’s contract is up, so no need to cut him. If they cut Smith, they will save $8 million which will mean they would be only $26 million over the cap. I doubt JJ is gonna want to play for negative $26 million.

  18. Let me see if I have this right, the Raiders don’t need a QB but every QB over the last almost 3 years is rumored. The Raiders DO need defense, but they aren’t on the list. Strange.

  19. Happy for him. This was coming since the season ended. He is at the end of his career, and shouldn’t be getting paid the amount that he is. The Texans couldn’t afford to keep him at that number, and JJ was unlikely to settle for less to play on a team that is going through a re-build. This allows him to choose his destination and the salary he is willing to sign for (I would expect a contract that is heavily incentive-laden).

My personal guess would be for him to sign with Green Bay. Allows him to go home to Wisconsin and play for a team that should compete for a championship again next season. I have to think that’s his goal with wherever he ends up.

  20. Not a good year for these free agents or trade candidates to try to make their way to a “contender”. Most of the contenders have no cap space.

  21. I know, I know – hurt. McCarthy’s teams were always dropping guys too due to injury.
    =====

    Why blame injuries?

McCarthy did plenty to lose on his own.

Not sure about that. But if GETTING to the playoffs is his goal then it certainly WON’T be Minnesota.

  23. I’d like to see him go to the Chiefs in a rotation… Clark and Watt on the ends and Jones in the middle would be freaking awesome.

  24. He certainly would look great in a Ravens uniform and would give the D a much needed pass rusher.

Not for long, once Been reworks his contact. The Steelers will make it happen. JJ to the Burgh!

  26. Steelers seem the most likely due to the family connection. Although Washington could use him as a situational player.

  27. I’d like to hear some opinions based on which defense he’d fit in best. He’s a DE. He’s also been in a defense where the DE gets after the QB. Not all 3-4 schemes are set up that way. For example when Wolfe came to the Ravens as a DE he said he was used to getting after the QB in Denver but in Baltimore he’s asked to do different things.

Yeah, man. And if Pittsburgh lands this guy they’re totally going to win the NFC Championship.

  30. I think the key thing JJ Watt said was he couldn’t imagine Texas not being in his life! Was that a hint he wanted a call from the Cowboys? With JJ age creeping up, he needs a situation where he no longer considered ‘the man’, just one of the boys. No pun intended. I’m also sure JJ would like to play for a chance to be get a Super Bowl ring. His time frame is short to get that ring, so I would think he would limited his choices to teams he thought could win a Super Bowl next year or the year after. That’s just my thought.

  31. So there is a fire sale in Houston? What the heck, it isn’t even a sale. It is a get out of jail card. No one would give a 1 for him now (well, other then Bill O’Brien), but he is still worth something. Great guy, great teammate. I’d expect Green Bay to be the most likely landing point. Wish him well.

  32. Kansas city it is, let’s hope he can last through a season including a deep playoff run

  33. Bad move must hate the Patriots Way in for a rude awakening Wont get paid jack especially whith the cap in limbo

  34. Hopefully not the Cowboys.
We have plenty of depth at the injury prone lineman position.

  35. Dallas should cut Crawford and Lee, sign Watt. America’s Team baby – perfect fit! Oh yeah, it has been 25 years since Dallas has won a championship. Would still be cool, drafted Smith instead of Watt.

  36. Actually, rumors about Watt being traded to the Bucs have been circulating for over a month here. Now that he’s free to sign wherever he wants I wouldn’t count the Bucs out. It’s not like Barrett lit the world on fire this year in Tampa. Last year he benefitted greatly with Suh but especially Vita Vea in the interior. Vea alone was double teamed every game and this year while he was out Barrett was not as effective until Vea came back for the last two games IMHO. Also, I believe the Bucs are around 30 million in cap space.

  37. I doubt it happens because Spanos is cheap, but the Chargers have quite a bit of cap space, and I doubt they’re bringing back Melvin Ingram. Would be quite the 1-2 punch with Joey Bosa.

  38. Depending on his asking price, he would be a nice addition to the Cleveland d-line but his injury history does concern me. Based on the way the HOU has been run, I can see him wanting to play for a guy who won Coach of the Year, and for a team that has a front office with its act together.

  39. Wouldn’t mind seeing him in the Black & Gold but I’m not sure how they make that happen given their cap situation.

  40. I don’t get the steelers or the Bucs. Far from a steeler fan, but they have no cap room. If they want an edge guy, why don’t they resign Dupree coming off an ACL. Tampa has a bunch of their own guys to resign. I’m sure Brady pointed out that Watt can be completely neutralized, as the Pats did time after time.

  41. Watt will be completely motivated for the next season, probably has a couple good seasons left. Browns have the money and should pick him up. Two hour drive to Pittsburg to visit brothers

  42. Indianapolis is the team. Cap room, JHouston is a 32 yr old FA, the other DE is a JAG and the Colts know his game well.

  43. JJ seems like an instant upgrade for most teams, but how many games has he missed the last few years?

  44. He’s taking a cap friendly deal and signing with Tom Brady and the Bucs. He already has all the money in the world, but you can’t buy a super bowl ring, at any price. Shaq Barrett is already talking about breaking the bank, and he already has his ring, so he doesn’t need another. J.J. will take his roster spot.

  45. If Watt is smart, he’ll sign cheap 1 year deals on contenders for the rest of his career. His best days are behind him and he’s already made $100m in the NFL, so he should go for a ring with his last few productive seasons.

  46. The only reason this idea is entertaining to any Steeler fan is the cute sentimental image of the three Watt brothers playing together. Otherwise, it makes no sense.

Steelers defense, particularly their front seven, is set even with Dupree leaving (Highsmith looked good last year for a raw rookie that’ll develop, is cheap, and is already signed). It’s the offense they need to address — definite needs at OL, RB, TE, and probably WR (and maybe QB, although that prob wont be addressed til 2022). Why spend time and $ on Watt when there’s so many other needs on the other side of the ball.

All that, on top of no cap room = forget about Watt unless it’s for vet minimum, which it won’t be.

  47. Everyone keeps referencing Pitt, GB and Chi, but aren’t all those 3 teams pretty far over the cap?

  48. Like the guy said way up top – Buffalo needs him to be their short term General. Milano & Edmunds are garbage and Jerry Hughes needs single blocking at this stage. Hughes or Watt. Pick your poison. I like it.

  49. Elway on line 1. Watt, Von, Chubb will make a pretty good pass rush combo against Mahomes.

footballs the ultimate team sport. have u seen some of the craptastic teams he was part of? i dont care how u make it look or smell u cant take a turd to the bank and get money….or a sb ring

  52. Help? Child please. If you mean taking up a roster spot in camp then getting hurt twice in the season helping. Long past his prime. Almost every playoff team from this year is better at his position.

  53. brownoholic thee mistake by the lake! You Browns fans overate what you think is a good destination!! You don’t even have a good fan base!! They suck!!!!!!!

  54. If he realistically wants a ring, he’d be wise to look into the AFC upper echelon. TB was kind of a fluky run during the season, but magical during the post season. I’m not sure how Buffalo’s cap situation is, but from a logical view they need him bad. Their offense can hang in a shootout, but the defense looked pretty lost at times. Just his presence alone can change a lot, not to mention the pressure he’s capable of when healthy. Get him some better help on the line and he doesn’t have to be the guy “physically.” Baltimore would be wise to at least consider him as well. Cleveland isn’t the pushover they once were.

  55. If he realistically wants a ring, he’d be wise to look into the AFC upper echelon.
    ——————————————

Why AFC? Watt should look at all potential contenders. Niners, Seahawks, Rams, Green Bay, Tampa Bay, Buffalo, Miami.

I would say the Steelers, where he could be with his brother, but I think that the Steelers will be in rebuild mode.

  56. Many of these teams listed as favorites, although they make sense like Pittsburgh, but many of them don’t have the cap space. The Steelers for one can’t even afford their current roster without restructuring at least a few players, to include Ben. And if Tampa plans on keeping their team as is, they probably won’t have the cap space either.

  57. @rader8

The Rams are already in salary cap/draft pick purgatory, it just isn’t viable seeing as how they’re eating dead money in Goff’s contract, plus paying Stafford. Aaron Donald is a positive, but even he isn’t cheap. How can they afford Watt? TB is already paying a ton of veterans on their defensive side, and if there’s any truth to the Russell Wilson drama that place may be a mess behind the scenes. GB is the only realistic place in the NFC he could have a shot. Just my two cents.

  58. Any team without a QB is out of the picture already and that includes Baltimore and then factor in Cap Room….Bucs or Bills…..one of them will equal a ring

  59. Where will J.J. Watt Land?

Hopefully, somewhere soft, like Kansas City, so he doesn’t get hurt…again.

  60. Class act guy. Who wouldn’t want him in their city for how much time and money and effort he put back into the community of Houston.

  61. Don’t see the Packers getting him. They’re $20 million over the cap already, and that’s assuming they let all their free agents walk (Jones, Linsley, etc.)

If they’re a contender like he wants to play for, they won’t have the cap space to sign him. If they have the cap space to sign him, they won’t be a contender.

  62. GREEN BAY. Obviously. He will be ring-chasing & Pittsburgh is a mess. But if GREEN BAY can make the correct FA moves & hit on the draft then adding Watt makes perfect sense. Plus I’m reading his wife plays professional soccer in neighboring Chicago & that Watt also loves himself some Wisconsin. My money is on GREEN BAY.

  63. The Bills make plenty of sense along those lines as well, as do the Chiefs.

    ___

With what money? Neither team has the cap space to pay him.

  64. He will have a G on his helmet next season, its only logical, his home state, his home team, the team he grew up cheering for,a very successful team led by the MVP quarterback and some very good defensive players as team mates, a team that just missed the SB two straight years and a Wi fan base that just adores him.he makes enough money from endorsements that he can afford to give up some salary in exchange for bigger things in his life.

The Packers have to shed nearly 30 million just to get under the cap. I really hope they do sign him, because that leaves virtually no chance of them re-signing Linsley or Jones.

Is Watt worth losing those 2 players to you packers fans?

Besides that, several teams with cap space and not having to make cuts will be bidding against GB. It’s a nice story, but that is all it is, a story.

It’s easy for you to sit on the couch with Doritos on your chest telling him to take a discount, but in the real world, he has to make $ while he can.

  66. He will be wanting that ring. So he will look to the top teams, KC, Tampa, Buffalo, GB. If he can’t get it done there, he will look to others teams that might have a chance next year, Browns, Ravens, Rams, Seahawks. Steelers will need to fix their QB situation before they can be considered. Ben has gotten old and they don’t have an answer yet. Adding JJ to they D isn’t going to fix the offense.

    =====

Jones won’t be back. Thats a total pipedream.

The Packers historically don’t do 3rd contracts with their lineman. That goes back all the way to the Wolf days.

I’d like to see Linsley back, but I doubt it happens. He’d have to take a bargain deal, and I bet there will something better out there for him.

I think if the Packers really wanted Watt, this would be done already.
