Report: Eagles have yet to be offered a first-round pick for Carson Wentz

The Eagles still want to trade quarterback Carson Wentz. Wentz still wants to be traded. That reality, coupled with Wentz’s Goff-ic contract, is keeping the Eagles from getting the kind of trade offer they’d like to receive.

Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Inquirer, in an article explaining the delay in the trade, writes that “league sources doubt [G.M. Howie] Roseman has been offered a first-round pick of any sort for Wentz, this year or in the future.” Recently, Eagles legend Ron Jaworski said that the Colts have offered a pair of second-round picks, with the possibility of an additional third- or fourth-round selection down the round.

Two weeks after news emerged of the trade that will send Matthew Stafford to the Rams and Jared Goff to the Lions, the reality remains that Wentz compares more to Goff than to Stafford, due to Wentz’s contract. While Wentz quite possibly has a better chance than Goff of justifying the many millions still to be earned, now isn’t the ideal time to be shopping Wentz and his long-term deal, which pays out $25 million fully-guaranteed in 2021 and which has more than $15 million more become fully-guaranteed for 2022 only a few days after the start of the new league year. If the goal, as always, is buy low and sell high, the Eagles based on Wentz’s play in 2020 are selling low.

The primary potential suitors continue to be the Colts and the Bears. It continues to make little sense for the Bears to want Wentz or, more importantly, for Wentz to want the Bears. The Colts, therefore, know that they’re the only real option, which makes it very difficult for the Eagles to create real leverage.

Any leverage the Eagles currently possess instantly evaporates if the Colts address their needs elsewhere. While there’s no indication that the Colts are preparing to pivot toward another veteran quarterback, if the Eagles push too hard and wait too long, the Colts will have no choice but to make other plans.

So why not just take the offer of two second-round picks, if Jaworki’s information is correct? It gets the Eagles tnet value for a quarterback whose 2020 performance coupled with his current contract could have easily put the Eagles in Brock Osweiler mode, requiring them to give someone a draft pick to get Wentz’s bloated contract off the books.

  1. The Eagles are going to have to offer to pay a portion of his contract if they truly want to unload him

  2. Every year people drool over the life changing can’t miss Top 2-3 quarterbacks in the draft every year. Let me remind everyone that Jared Goff/Carson Wentz were Top 2 in their class, and Jameis Winston/Marcus Mariota were Top 2 in theirs. In 5 years, all four are barely in the NFL and could all be gone in two…

  3. Just goes to show the luck sometimes needed to win a super bowl. These clowns are credited with one.

Howie Roseman shouldn’t be making this decision.

  4. If I’m Chris Ballard, my offer just went down to a 2nd and a 3rd that can become a 2nd based on a playoff appearance. Keep making me wait, and you’ll end up giving me picks to take Wentz.

Eagles have zero leverage, and the Colts can therefore leverage that.

  5. Just one more thing for Wentz to pout about.
His team drafted someone to replace him, and now to find out that no one else thinks he’s worth a 1st round pick.
    Oh, the indignity!

  6. The Eagles should take the offer now before it goes down closer to “guarantee day”. Colts would be better off offering a 3rd to LV for Mariota, IMHO.

  7. Where has Wentz or the eagles publicly mentioned trade. If im the eagles no way I take the colts offer and eat 35 million cap hit in 2021 knowing the kid is coming off one bad year and the circumstances for it.

  8. And they won’t be. In fact, the Colts are nutty to offer two 2nd rounders.

The longer the Eagles draw this out, the more his value drops because the Colts know no one else is making better offer.

  9. The price really isn’t high for the acquiring team, 40 million 2/yrs? 20 million a yr for 2 yrs and if Wentz does take to new coaching 20 mill per could be a bargain. Wentz’s physical talent isn’t under question. It’s a number of things. Bad coaching, bad play calling, horrible weapons, Wentz AND Doug acting like babies. Reich is banking on being able to get the 2017 Wentz back. Look what a change of coaching did for Josh Allen.

  10. Wentz is half way to being a bust, with a huge contract. It would take a pretty foolish GM to trade for him. He has as much trade value as Marcus Mariotta and Blake Bortles.

  11. Try offering Wentz and a first round pick, that should net you the first round pick you are looking for. Wentz is not good, that is why they are getting rid of him.

  12. Not sure comparing Goff to Wentz is fair. One of those guys won a road playoff game a few weeks ago.

  13. Lots of reasons not to give any compensation. Wentz is often injured. Now he is slightly Hurt too:) That contract is not justified based on his performance. I don’t see any talk about Wentz giving up some . money

  14. The only way they get a first rounder is to eat some of the contract and agree to make it a first rounder conditioned upon certain 2022 performance milestones.

  15. Well I can’t feel too sorry for Wentz, because I’m certain his bank account makes up for it!

  16. One of the worst contract extensions in NFL history. They are soooooooo messed up now, NOBODY is taking on that contract and they arent getting a #1 not even close. He has regressed so much its almost sad now.

  17. I’d stick with Wentz another year. Improve the team around him and I don’t why they shouldn’t compete within their division.

  18. Wait, what, this is not possible. ESPN said last week a trade was imminent and going to happen in the next few days, last weekend. What a bs hype machine that works to create news instead of report it. MJ is the GOAT, bs, KAJ, then Wilt, then Russell.

  19. If Eagles want to truly dump Wentz they need to put some more sugar on the deal. Zach Ertz is out the door we all know that and will not be getting a new contract. Why not throw in Ertz with Wentz and ask for a Matt Stafford type deal maybe a 1st two 2nds and a 4th or 5th. They will add to the cap but at this point who are we kidding your still gonna trade Ertz anyway and add to the cap so why not.

  20. The mad scientists that make the personnel decisions for Philly blew up the laboratory when they drafted Hurts. If a team feels like they have to draft a QB that high with a relatively young former high pick with a monster contract on the roster then you trade that player right away.

First off Wentz cap is $34.7mil for 2021 and $31.3mil for 2022, that isn’t any bargin going into a reduced cap season even if he does play like he did in 2017. Then they want a 1st rounder to boot, NO WAY!

Now when it comes to Allen just when did he get a coaching change, sure he got a new QB coach but Daboll is still the OC and I give him every bit of credit for Allen’s improvement, but it was an elementry change and one I called for his first two years, all it took was to limit his throws to under 25yds. Yes he can throw the ball 70yds but he can’t hit the broad side of a barn at over 30 and his first two season proved it he was at a 8.3% comp on throws over 25yds so just don’t let him try making those throws since he can’t. It’s the old BB way of coaching you stay away from things your players can’t do and call/design plays around their strengths, sometimes it really is that simple!

  22. With how bad he’s played combined with that contract two 2nd round picks seems like an overpay to be honest. You’re shelling out top tier QB money on the hope that he can play well, which he hasn’t for at least a year, as well as stay healthy which he hasn’t been able to do since high school.

  23. Nobody wants your damaged goods. Take what you can get while you can get anything you goofy clowns.

No one, no how, no way, would be offering anything remotely close to that for these two players.

  25. I wouldn’t offer them a pack of bubble gum for Wentz. It’s more likely a team wants a first round pick to take on that boat anchor of a contract.

  26. The Steelers got Dewayne Haskins for a Primanti bro’s sammich and Matt Canada will turn him into a superstar. Carson Wentz is not as good as Haskins. The Eagles will cut Wentz outright book it.

  27. I keep hearing how the Eagles want an Stafford type of deal and in reality all they’re going to get is a Brock Osweiler type deal!

Maybe with a few more of these huge contracts that really handcuff the team for years then teams will finally figure out that you don’t sign a QB to a huge deal until you have to, it’s totally stupid!

  28. With Wentz the Colts would probably end up with a very good season record. At least that is their hope. Offering 2 second rounders is like 2 high 3 rd rounders. Eagles should hold on to Wentz.

In the labor law game, we call that “regressive bargaining.” You reject our demand for a 4% increase? OK. Now we want 4 and 1/2. Don’t like that? It goes up to 5%.

  30. A first round pick?? Now this is laughable!! If Wentz is that good, why are you getting rid of him?

The fact that they are not talking to Big Ben tells me they are going to try to coach up Haskins and see what happens. He has left the second most dysfunctional organization in North American sports (Hi, Houston Texans!) to one of the best. I suspect he will be terrorizing my Browns for years to come.

Does anyone else think ” Prince Harry ” when they look at Wentz?

    * * * * *

    A young Andy Samberg

  33. I think Roseman is making this up as he goes along. He shelled out big bucks fir a guy they subsequently benched and now he hopes some greater fool GM will come and bail him out.

What’s he going to when March 19th gets close and he’s faced with the prospect of having to pay Wentz a $10M roster bonus? It’s not like the Bears or Colts are going to significantly increase their offers before then. They’re not the captive here, he is.

  34. What a strange place for the Colts to be in. The Colts are as good a place as possible for a QB to be right now, primed for the playoffs. But what kind of market is there? Who’s available? They’re not in a great draft position and most potential trades look past their prime or never going to become elite. Would be wild for a team this ready to roll to come up empty at QB.

  35. I wouldn’t give more than a fourth round pick. I suspect he will end up just getting cut.

  36. There are franchises that actually prefer 2nd round picks to first round picks.
If the Eagles are offered two second rounders plus a conditional third rounder for Wentz they should accept immediately. If you have any faith in your scouting department they have the oppotunity to turn Wentz into three additional quality starters within the next two years.
What else do they want? The opportunity to draft two potential superstars in the first round for someone they consider damaged goods?
There are actually franchises that draft superstars outside the top 100 in the draft. One such player just recently won his seventh Super Bowl ring…
    Just sayin‘……

  37. Imagine giving up a first round pick (and more) for a guy that was benched for Jalen Hurts… insane.

  38. kevpft…yeah, as far as vets go, Wentz and Ryan are probably the best it’s going to get. Ryan was roughly the 15th QB in the league last year. That’s right about where Rivers was. Wentz was very near the bottom, down there with Darnold and Lock. That’s why it’s weird that Roseman is trying to get star-level value for him. He might end up having to hang on to him, which would create cap problems.

  39. “Eagles have yet to be offered a first-round pick for Carson Wentz”

    Why would anyone do that?

  40. Indy should give up on the idea of trading for Wentz. If I was the GM, I’d trade for Marcus Mariota. With that o-line and Reich’s tutelage, Mariota would thrive.

  41. I’m surprised anyone even offered a 2nd round pick at this point. Wentz is injured a lot, his contract is a cap disaster, and he looked like a psychological basket case this past season. His confidence is shot and it looks like he’s lost his passion too. He’s definitely worth a look as a reclamation project, but only for very low compensation to the Eagles (maybe a 3rd round pick).

  42. And they probably won’t get a 1 for Wentz. Everyone who’s shown any interest is waiting until the Eagles drop their price. It’s going to come down to how desperate they are to deal him.

  43. Wow. I heard Packers offered 2 first and 2 second for him because he won’t choke like Rodgers.

  44. Reminder to GM. QBs do not block in offensive line, do nothing run the ball, do not catch passes and do nor call plays. Super bowl winning QB this year was not even in championship game. Same QB but supporting cast is better

  45. Does Florio know more than he is letting on? His reasoning behind Wentz not wanting the Bears is pretttttyyyy soft. Like most of his suppositions (ie the entirety of his contribution to this site)… really I spose.

  46. Not a dime on this team till howie is fired. We need to boycott the team till this moron who has no buisness being a gm is removed.

  47. Steve Cunningham says:
    February 13, 2021 at 5:29 pm
It would take a total moron to offer a 1st rounder after Wentz’s last two seasons!

    Ryan Pace on line 1

  48. What difference does it make what draft pick compensation you get if you can’t draft?

  49. Are you sure? I think a number of first round picks could make a fair swap: haskins, lynch, mariota, hackenberg, rosen, etc. If they want a future pick though, third day seems fair.

  50. I mean, they have Hurts already… and two 2nd round picks for Wentz and his abysmal contract? If I’m Philly I do that trade in a heartbeat.

  51. Some people think the Eagles should tough it out another year with Wentz, and I agree. The NFC East is an absolute dumpster of a division, and Philly just had anrash if injuries that hit at the worst times. They have a decent position in the draft this year, get him a better line so he at least has some time to show them why they extended him. If he still can’t do it, or at least has a good statistical season, then next year it should be (somewhat) financially easier to move him. Because as it stands nobody wants him right now.

  52. A few years ago QB’s were allowed to sit on the bench and made to carry a clipboard around to chart plays until they learned the NFL game. Now 1st, 2nd round QB’s are expect to start. The pro game is a faster pace game than college. For many QB’s have trouble adjusting. Some play on instinct for the first. Then they try to learn the pro game in their 2nd year. They try to keys together and get overwhelmed and don’t have the success they had in year one and lose confidence. That’s were the coach come in. If the coach loses confidence in that QB, it had for that QB to get it back. I’m not saying that happened to Carson Wentz, but it could have. It’s obvious that Wentz has no confidence in himself. At that point a change of scenery is best for all. The question is Carson Wentz worth first round pick, That answer would be only a team that has confidence in him past based on his college and first year performance.

  53. The Eagles have a great owner, and Howie Roseman is a very smart man, but I wish they’d bring on a top personnel guy. When things go bad, everyone wants to fire people. They want to clean house. But in the Eagles’ case, I don’t think they need to get rid of anyone. They just need a guy who knows the personnel end of things. They caught lightning in a bottle and won a super bowl, but that can be very misleading. There’s no lightning in that bottle, and it’s not going to get any better unless they add a good personnel executive. They’ve really botched a lot of things in the last couple years. They need a fresh perspective. Someone who’s been there before.

  54. Not sure the Eagles brass really understand what they are trying to do, or aren’t being objective yet about it.
They are not holding an auction for a premium player, at a premium position from a position of strength. Their confusion at the lack of compensation implies they think they are.
They are in actuality trying to find someone to take their mess of their hands. If wentz had no $$$ price attached to him with that contract then the prospect of bringing the best out of him might have more appeal to more OCs and GMs. But he does have that contract, he has been a TO machine.
If the Eagles still think he has MVP form in him they must also realize that they are in a minority opinion and at his price they have NO leverage.
Until they come to reality all they are doing is making their football Ops seem to not understand what all the other teams already do.
At that price, for that performance why would you give up a first, a second, or much of anything if he comes with that contract like a millstone around his neck with the most uncertain salary cap in 20 years?

  55. Not that I think that Jared Goff is likely to ever lead a team to a Super Bowl victory, but I don’t see how anyone can say with any real conviction that Carson Wentz is more likely to be worthy of earning the millions of dollars that might be coming his way than Jared Goff is when he can’t even stay healthy on a regular basis to both get his team TO the playoffs and then actually PLAY in them? He’s probably going to end up going down in history as being a Balsa Wood Quarterback.

  56. Don’t forget, Wentz was hurt last year.

Some very hurtful things were said. He was very hurt by them.

  57. So? Wentz is a bust. Nothing to see here. You are worth what others will pay. Pretty simple. LOL that the Eagles think Wentz is a superstar.

  58. mdt53vb says:

Lots of reasons not to give any compensation. Wentz is often injured

Wentz hasn’t missed a regular season game in 3 yrs. Also, won the last 4 games (with a 10-1 TD ratio in to end the 2019 season.) After getting his team to the playoffs in 2018 AND 2017. The Eagles would NOT have won the Superbowl w/o Wentz going 11-1 that yr. All with no weapons and a horrible GM.

  59. 1st off, the Eagles already paid signing bonus money and are responsible for the rest of it, so the acquiring team will only have to pay his salary $25M in 21 and in ’22, they can walk away from, if they want. If the Eagles trade Wentz for anything less than the return the Lions got, they are fools. If he insists on wanting out, he can rip up his contract and return the bonus $, and become a FA. I think Wentz can be a SB winning QB, and hope he remains an Eagle, but if he demands out, there’s only 2 ways, get a deal they like, or tearing up his deal.

  60. Too bad the Browns didn’t keep that pick and draft: Bosa or Buckner or Ramsey or Tunsil or Fuller or Elliott, instead of the 14 other guys who aren’t on the roster lol. The talking heads ripped those dudes for trading out instead of taking Wentz. Now he’s being shopped. The NFL is wild man.

As per over the cap. His cap numbers for a new team are $25MM for 2021 and $26MM for 2022. This is salary and roster bonus numbers. Philly would eat the signing bonus cap hit.

  62. Prediction: They will not receive a decent offer from anyone and will cut him the first day of the new NFL year (March 17). Why would any team give up compensation and inherit his horrible contract when they could sign him for very little if he is cut? The new regime in Philly wants to start over with their own players and will just eat his contact.

  63. Wentz is overpaid, doesn’t like coaching, just got his coach fired and is coming off the worst season of his career……..don’t hold your breath waiting for a 1st rounder for him.

  64. If you look at Wentz’s stats on Pro Football Reference, he had pretty good years in 2018 and 2019. Granted he was awful in 2020. But if you can get the Eagles to pick up let’s say $10-15 million of his salary for 2021 and you only have to give them let’s say a 2nd and 3rd round pick, I’d say that’s a pretty decent gamble for the Colts given that they’ve got nothing at QB at the moment.

  65. The sticking point is the sorry excuse for a gm is desperately trying to save face after trading two top 12 picks, plus a second, third, and fourth in order to draft the guy. And then extended him flor tens of millions of guaranteed $$, before he need to, and after his play had started to show clear signs of decline.

  66. As an eagles fan, two 2s & a player works for me. For any other team, I’d fancy the 3rd rounder over a player but howie would ruin that. On the other hand, he’ll probably ruin the 2s AND a late first rounder. I don’t think he can ruin the 6th pick but I have some sickening feeling he will end up reaching for ANOTHER QB, alienate another starting QB & we’ll never know what Hurts is until he wears another uniform. The kid is a winner, I love his attitude, idk if he can be a franchise QB, I hope so because his intangibles kick ass but if he can’t play at the right level, that doesn’t mean a damn thing

  67. The only way this makes any sense is if the Eagles are prepared to start the season with Wentz.

  68. I think the eagles would trade him for just a 7th round pick before they would cut him. If they cut him they are still liable for the guaranteed part of his contract. Trading him would get them out from some of that

  69. Wentz has a large upside, but unfortunately, he also has a large downside. Combine that with his huge contract and any team that takes him is taking a large risk.

The Eagles should take whatever Indy is offering and run away.

True, but every now and then you get a can’t miss like Jamarcus Russell.

  71. They should have taken the Colts 2nds when they had the chance.. They are going to be offered less and less as this goes on. Hes uncertain as even a stop gap at this point, carries that big cap hit, and its 100% certain the Eagles arent keeping him. This is similar to the Rams trying to get out from under an underperformer with a huge contract, and Goff is better than Wentz at this point.

  72. Carson Wentz will come back in a major way under Frank Reich. I don’t know how everyone is so down on him regardless of his trade value. I can see why his trade value is junk. Wentz was well on his way to superstardom, but then nobody stopped him from running around too much. Carson Wentz is not Lamar Jackson, and should not be just taking off out of the pocket to go running up the field and then take on defenders. And now, the injuries have piled up. So he’s beaten up a little bit, and then you throw him behind a bad offensive line . So he’s trying to recapture his form coming back from all those injuries, and is probably a little gun shy now which he should’ve been to begin with, about taking off out of the pocket and now he’s got pressure coming from every angle on the field. That destroys his confidence, and his mechanics. It’s not that these teams think he’s a bust, because we all know with our own two eyes, what we’ve seen from Carson Wentz. It’s that he’s a reclamation project, and his salary is so hi that it’s hard to put talent around him to make the reclamation project work. If anyone could do it, Frank Reich has proven before that he’s the guy who can make Carson look like a first ballot hall of Famer. So let’s all hope that for Carson’s sake, and the sake of the Indianapolis franchise, that Carson lands in Indianapolis.

There are also the guys like Steve Young, Jim Plunkett, who were very highly regarded coming out of college, but got stuck on very bad teams. Eventually they moved on to greener pastures and won their Super Bowls when given better opportunities. And Jared Goff has won more games since 2017 than any QB not named Brady, so it’s not like he hasn’t been successful. Mariota has had 5 or 6 different coordinators in six seasons, so I wouldn’t be too shocked if he didn’t eventually pull a Steve Young and end up a HOFer.

What I said was true…the TEAM THAT TRADES for him will get a bargain if/when Wentz resorts back to form. A lot of his salary was signing and roster bonus that Philly already paid. The next team will be on the hook for around 23-24 million per yr. Which by salary for QBs not isn’t bad (way less then Goff btw) Wentz took his team to the postseason every yr (except rookie yr and 2020) 2017,2018,2019 and carried his team on his back in 18, and 19. With a GM that gave him zero help, bad play calling, and historic injury problems. 2020 Him and Doug acted like children. Wentz still has the talent to be a top 10 or higher QB. Riech made Wentz a MVP candidate. If he goes to Indy, watch him do it again. Name me a “great” QB with no weapons? Even Brady had weapons, the ONLY QB who’s close is Russ and he had Lynch and the best D in the league. Name just one great QB with less weapons then Wentz…just one!!!

  75. The truth I’m seeing emerge in recent years is that you just shouldn’t overpay for potential.

The guys who have shown they can get it done – Brady, Mahomes, Rodgers, Wilson, etc. – all of whom got their big contracts after winning a SB – there’s a good argument for the avalanche of money they get.

But I think the “middle class” of QBs is overvalued these days. Prescott, Wentz, Goff, Watson, Cousins, etc., lots of stats here but not getting it done. This level of QB is about $15 million/yr overpriced.

If you’re further from the SB at the end of the rookie contract that you were at the start, seems better to move on to the next guy than to kill your salary cap for nothing.

  76. 1st rd pick for Wentz? Laughable. No team is required to make a poor choice just because you did.
