Marcus Mariota mentioned as a possible Patriot

The Raiders may trade backup quarterback Marcus Mariota, and New England has been mentioned as a possible destination.

Mike Reiss of ESPN sees the Patriots as a potential trading partner for the Raiders, noting that Mariota’s $10.6 million salary would easily fit under the Patriots’ cap, and the Patriots may be willing to give up a late-round pick to acquire him.

The idea isn’t necessarily that Mariota would be the Patriots’ first choice as a starting quarterback, but that they could add him as well as another quarterback. Reiss refers to Mariota as a “Plan B,” with former Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who may be available from the 49ers, as Plan A.

The Raiders are currently projected to be about $19 million over the salary cap for 2021, so it seems safe to say they won’t be keeping both Mariota’s $11.4 million cap number and Derek Carr‘s $22.1 million cap number on their books.

  1. Mariotta would be a great fit for the Pat’s, he is a team player and never causes problems or draws attention to himself.

  2. No!!
Mariota is terrible! Being a nice guy who doesn’t cause problems is great, but it doesn’t move the chains.
    Bring back Jimmy G!

  3. Jimmy G would be better, IF he could stay on the field, he can not – Mariota may well be the kind of bridge option they need for a couple of years

  4. Mariota isn’t nearly accurate enough, nor level-headed enough under pressure for Belichick, but neither was Cam, so…

  5. Mariota is almost a perfect fit for the style New England plays. I’d take him over Garoppolo for the long run. Both QB’s tend to get injured. If Mariota could stay healthy, he could be their ticket back to the super bowl. He’s still very young, and has had about 5 or 6 different coordinators since he’s been in the league. Hard to gain any traction with so many changes. There have been a few NFL QB’s who have moved on to different teams before they finally landed in the right spot and then won Super Bowls. Steve Young. Jim Plunkett, Brett Favre, Kurt Warner, Drew Brees. It’s happened that many times, it will happen again. Obviously their original teams didn’t think they were capable, or they wouldn’t have let them get away.

Why didn’t the Pats sign Mariota in 2020?
Probably because they only had a million in cap space, his salary with the Raiders was north of 9 million but what do I know.

  7. I was expecting Mariota to be a Patriot last offseason. Thoughtful it was the best possible fit for both of them.

Which is why, as a Bills fan, I do not want to see this trade happen.

  8. So it’s not Andy Dalton this year? Remember that was who they were supposed to sign last year, which turned out to be 100% untrue.

  9. Raiders should keep Mariota for now. If Carr gets hurt you need a capable backup! Raiders have been there before, especially in the playoffs vs Texans a few yrs ago. Draft another QB this year if one seems good to develop, but Defense is main draft priority!!

  10. Mariota is an injury magnet. He needs to play somewhere where there’s a solid o-line. New England is not it.

The Pats have a great o-line! Despite missing Andrews for part of last year and Cannon all year (who tolled his contract) they finished 4th overall according to PFF’s final year grades.

  12. Based on what the Rams gave to get a QB, it seems likely a trade for a day 2 pick at the very least.

  13. It’s quite possible that NE has 10 wins if they had a QB that could throw the ball. They had to make the offensive 1 dimensional because Cam doesnt have the ability to throw. I don’t want to knock him too much because everyone liked him here and his locker room presence may have helped a little but 7 wins without a QB on that roster is not bad. Just like it was impressive the Giants were 6-10 while also only having 12 passing scores. Only difference is Jones could “theoretically” improve, Newton may be out of the league. Along with Stidham and Hoyer.

  14. Couldnt be any worse then cam newton. I’d like to see mariota and stidham in a battle for the starting job throw jake dolegala in there too who ever wins it starts.

  15. He’s the best backup the Raiders have had since the Mad Bomber and George Blanda played behind The Snake in 1974. I’d try to keep him. But yes, if you can get a 1st rounder for him, and he’s good with it, deal him.

  16. I think NE should sign Ryan Fitzpatrick along with somebody like Mariota – just in case…

  17. Mariota would be a step in the right direction for the Pats. How big of a step remains to be seen, but looking at the prospects the Pats will probably not be getting their franchise QB drafting at #15 or in any trade.

Mariota or Trubisky. Bring it on.

Easy for you to say. You don’t root for the Pats.
