Report: Broncos will pursue Deshaun Watson, if Texans decide to trade him

USA TODAY Sports

As the Broncos continue to look for their first franchise quarterback since Peyton Manning, they reportedly have their eyes on Deshaun Watson.

According to Troy Renck of ABC 7 in Denver, the Broncos will pursue Watson, if the Texans decide to trade him.

The wording of the report is intriguing. If taken literally, it means that the Broncos won’t make an offer until the Texans indicate that offers are being accepted.

Why not make an offer absent an effort by Houston to make it known that they’ll trade Watson? If the Texans eventually get an offer they can’r refuse, maybe they’ll be smart enough to not refuse it. (Or maybe not.)

The fact that the Broncos could send Drew Lock to Houston as part of the package can’t hurt. Lock torched the Texans in December 2019, scoring a significant upset in NRG Stadium over a playoff team led by Watson. Maybe a couple of first-round picks and Lock would get the deal done.

Regardless, if the Broncos plan to wait for the Texans to officially open the market before making an offer, the Broncos could be waiting a while. To pry Watson away from the Texans, the Broncos may have to push the issue.

  1. Oh the rumors are endless for a player that is not officially available…read this

Panthers Would Trade RB McCaffery & 3 First-Round Picks For Texans QB Deshaun

If Watson is traded….he is going to the NFC !

  2. Remember when Clowney refused to sign his franchise tag and the Texans sat on him past the draft and the past the time he could sign a long term deal and then were forced to eat half his salary even to get a 3rd for him?

Yea, this is starting to feel like that.

  3. Drew Lock will be an outstanding backup QB for the Chiefs for the rest of his career. Welcome home young man.

  4. Can’t believe Elway has been a GM this long. Any other GM would have gotten the boot a long time ago.

  5. “ The fact that the Broncos could send Drew Lock to Houston as part of the package can’t hurt.”

You think Houston would look at acquiring Lock…favorably?

  6. Wow, I thought the Broncos found their QB in Drew Lock. I wonder when they came to the conclusion that he wasn’t the right guy. Other than Peyton Manning, which was literally a no-brainer, every QB Elway has acquired has been a bust. That’s almost against the odds. You’d figure luck would pop up sooner or later. So I guess we can agree that Elway has a huge problem evaluating QB’s. OK, so now he’s on to Deshaun Watson. Is Watson just the latest in a long line of failures? I say yes. Elway is obviously looking at the QB position in such a way that he blunders every time. I don’t know the details, but the results have been horrendous. I see that nothing is changing. Unfortunately, Denver can’t get rid of Elway fast enough. He still won two Super Bowls, and he opened the door for Peyton to come in and win one more for Pat Bowlen. But now it’s time to ride off into the sunset, and just be John Elway the HOF QB. This show is really getting old.

  7. So, potentially AFC West QBs will be:

    Derek Carr
    Justin Herbert
    Patrick Mahomes
    Deshaun Watson

    That’s absurd.

  8. Why send Lock and 2 firsts for the QB of a team your Lock could beat? When not injured Lock shows good glimpses. Why not use them picks to give Lock an o-line that’s not awful? Just dysfunctional teams doing dysfunctional things, and Broncs still looking for quick fixes.

  9. This seems a bit obvious. Of course the Broncos would because they have had dreadful QB play for over a decade

If this one game would be any part of any serious discussion about a trade….I’d be ashamed for both sides. Who cares what Lock did in one game??? Shouldn’t add or detract from any leverage. Any given Sunday.

  11. If they trade him it will not be in the AFC, he could end up San Francisco or New Orleans. It is going to be teams nobody is talking about like Carolina or Miami. He will go where all they need is a QB to go all the way and those two pop out.

  12. While the Broncos are a much better franchise than the Texans….why would Watson wanna go to another team where hes not gonna win the division for the next 10 years??

  13. Even the Texans can’t be stupid enough to turn a fellow mid-level AFC team into a contender and block themselves from the playoffs or the SB for the next 10 straight years. Broncos? Patriots? Dolphins? Jets?

I don’t buy it. Texans will ONLY trade to an NFC team.

  14. Probably 3 number ones, two seconds, and a couple of nice young players. Pretty pricey for a first time GM to pull the trigger on.

  15. Dateline Denver: The internet, it’s so simple.

The Bronco’s are a mess. They want everyone and anyone who know what a pigskin is.

  16. Whether they get Watson or not, Lock is done in Denver. His fragile ego can’t withstain this trade rumour.

  17. I may be the only person on the planet that’s not “all in” on Deshaun Watson. Yea he’s good but not 3 first round picks great. I think if he goes to the AFC West he’s already #3 behind Mahomes and Herbert.

  18. If you thought Brady-Brees twice a year, as short as it was, was good, can you picture Mahomes-Watson twice a year? Not to mention Herbert on the schedule twice a year. The AFC West could become really exciting!

  19. As a Dolphins fan, I’m very pleased to read this. Most of the Miami fan base, from polls I’ve read are happy to build around Tua.

  20. I think the Texans will trade him, but are obviously trying to leverage as much return as possible by saying they are not trading him.. if I’m miami I’m not offering anymore than tua and two first round picks.

  21. The #9 pick that Denver holds could be enticing if a QB that Texas likes falls (Trey Lance? Possible draft day trade along with 2 future 1st rounders could get it done. If Lock was the guy then Denver wouldn’t be looking to move on from him as they seem to be.

  22. Houston should try to keep him at all costs. Otherwise, there should be plenty of interest from NFC teams. Nightmare scenario of having to play against him at least every few years (and twice a year in the same division, every year if they finish in the same spot in their respective divisions) if he were to stay in the AFC. Lock is a trick or treat QB. A placeholder at best.

  23. Well, guess who isn’t going to Denver. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Florio is right. Some team will put some crazy franchise wrecking deal out there that can not be refused and the Texans will bite. This is a fire sale with an item quantity of one, so it’s just a matter of whoever gives up the most to get Watson. There will be no wait and see if nobody bids and you’ll get him on the cheap kinda situation. It almost seems like they’re not serious or somehow they think Watson will be a nuisance just to get his way to Denver where all of Watson’s problems will just go away or be solved.

  24. This Bronco fan believes the Broncs could afford to give up Tim Patrick and Bradley Chubb and pick 9; That’s two first round picks and a solid receiver without destroying their roster.

  25. Ut Oh…Derrick DeSean Watson will be just another quarterback to disappear down the John Elway Sinkhole (post Peyton Manning) like Brock Osweiler, Trevor Siemian, Paxton Lynch, Case Keenum, Joe Flacco, Brandon Allen, Jeff Driskel, Brett Rypien, & Drew Lock.

  26. Bad decision. They have a good QB. Save the draft picks it will take to get Watson and build your team.

  27. With Wrongway record on drafting QB, Denver should offer Seven 1st round draft picks for Watson.

  28. If Stafford got a few #1’s then hes worth like 6 #1’s and that’s too much to give up. I would just try to find a new QB in the draft.

  29. I still say no way does this trade happen unless the Texans get a top 3 pick (in the overall giant pick package…) in return so they can draft their QB of the future. I’m not buying these stories that Denver and San Francisco are going to get involved.

  30. Panthers Would Trade RB McCaffery & 3 First-Round Picks For Texans QB Deshaun – I read this last night on a few Panthers sites…If I was Texans GM I would personally drive Watson to Charlotte, North Carolina.

    ——–
You only tell the truth? I dont think so…2012 Manning throws for 37 tds, 2013 Manning throws for 55 tds, 2014 Manning throws for 39 touchdowns…I dont think you know what “decade” or “dreadful” actually means.

  32. Lifelong Bronco’s fan and former season ticket holder for 21 years and after what we’ve gone through with this team in the last 5 years I say why not. They can’t draft worth a darn so why not throw those picks away, rather than blow them. Throw in Von Miller too, why not. I’d rather see us go 4-12 with a QB that at least has some promise, than to consistently go 4-12 or 5-11 with young draft picks that plain suck.

  33. If Watson is smart he’ll go to the NFC. We all know Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen are going to run the AFC for the next 15-20 years like Brady and Manning did… Watson is going to be Phil Rivers if he stays.

  34. As Elway continues to prove he has no ability to draft talent at the QB position, this is the only way the Broncos will ever get another franchise QB.

  35. “As Elway continues to prove he has no ability to draft talent at the QB position, this is the only way the Broncos will ever get another franchise QB.”

Elway is not the GM anymore.

  36. No one should be ‘waiting’ for the Texans to try and trade me.
Teams should be on the phone with Caserio nonstop, figuring out what it would take to get Watson. He is that good of a talent.

  37. The cap hits all teams will take based on comments here trading players for Watson will destroy each team’s cap. The Texans also have a totally screwed cap and have since Rick Smith was GM.
Let him be Carson Palmer 2.0
