Titans have had contact with J.J. Watt

J.J. Watt has been a thorn in the side of the Titans for a decade, registering 18.0 sacks against the the club — the most of any divisional opponent.

But now, there’s a decent chance Watt could join them.

Titans General Manager Jon Robinson said his club has had some preliminary discussions with Watt, who was released from the division-rival Texans last week.

“We’ve had some contact,” Robinson said in his Tuesday video conference. “It’s early in the stages. We obviously know his skillset and what he’s meant to the Texans, having played against him twice [a year] and the type of player he is. So we’ll just kind of see how it goes like a lot of these guys that are becoming available over the next few weeks, see kind of where their interest is and make a determination if it’s an avenue that we went to go down and are we a fit, potentially, for some of these guys that become available.”

Titans head coach Mike Vrabel was the Texans’ linebackers coach from 2014-2016 and the club’s defensive coordinator in 2017, giving him some day-to-day familiarity with Watt.

It’s not at the same level, but Robinson has some experience with Watt, too. The G.M. noted he worked out the three-time defensive player of the year when he was with the Patriots and Watt was coming out of Wisconsin in 2011.

“He pushed me around on the field pretty good for about two hours,” Robinson said.

Though they won the AFC South, the Titans need to improve on defense, having finished 24th in points allowed and 28th in yards allowed in 2020. Tennessee had the worst third-down defense in the league, allowing a 51.9 percent conversion rate.

  1. I mean, whether it’s the Bucs, Titans, Rams, or Bills, any of these teams are a better choice over the Browns.

Why would they be? The, Bucs, Titans, Rams and Bills were all terrible teams before they weren’t. No matter how much you wanna hate, the Browns are an up and coming team.

  3. There are possible 31 teams. So far I’ve heard the Browns and Titans. Only 29 more to go. This is fun!

  4. Up and coming? The Browns were one bad call away from going to the AFC championship where the would have destroyed the Bills. Browns will finish with a better recode than all of the teams that dope jimmyhodges listed…

  5. He’s played against the Titans twice a year for 9 years, and has only 18 sacks, so he’s averaged 1 a game. The Titans offense was ranked 30th, 28th, 14th, 19th, and 27th during Watts prime yet he barely recorded 1 sack a game. Yet he’s supposed to be this defensive force?… Overrated

  6. The browns got into the playoffs barely. They did beat the Steelers who were over rated. ONE year of playoffs does not a contender make. Remember they can totally drop a deuce. See Jets\WFT games. If Mayfield will drop that number 2 we shall see.

  7. Hey, for all the clowns here, how much you want to bet the Browns don’t win the super bowl next season? I’d bet the house on it right now.

  8. Wait, wasn’t the last story about it being a sure thing he was going to the Browns?😌

Breaking News: A lot of teams are interested in Watt.🙄

  11. The reason they lost to the Jets was because they had NO WIDE RECEIVERS!!!!!! The wide receivers they had were from the practice squad being called up on Saturday night before the game. They may not make it to the Super Bowl next year, but the will be contenders. 30 other teams in the league did not make it to the Super Bowls this year genius!

  12. First pitt, the green bay the clowns now tenn..whos next? Only driving up the price tag people..

  13. And, I’ll be trolling fake Browns fans ten months from now when I’m correct once again.

Keep the hate coming. Remember the Browns is the Browns 🙂

  15. I’d take the bet. Based on previous comments, I’d bet the house that you’re going to be trolling for a long long time – regardless of how well the Browns fare next year.

  16. I don’t know if the Browns will win the Super Bowl, but no one can deny that this team is not the Cleveland Browns of old, who were perennial losers. They are very much improved and fun to watch in 2020. You have to give them the credit that they deserve. LOVED seeing them knock the Steelers out…

That is equal to 16 sacks per season math wizard. Play 10 years you have 160 sacks. Play 15, you have 240 sacks. Follow? Bruce Smith is 1st all-time at 200. Kevin Greene is 3rd at 160. See how this math thing works?

Wrong. I picked the Bucs to win the super bowl back in October. Next.

  19. Why on gawds green earth would he even consider the Clowns? Yeah I would look at about 15 other teams who have a better chance of making the SB. “Baker Mayfield” & “Super Bowl” shouldn’t even be in the same sentence together.

  20. “jameshodges says:

The Bucs won a super bowl with Brad Johnson, and that was mostly because of their defense that Tony Dungy built. If the Bucs can continue to add and maintain depth to their defense, they will at least play in another conference championship. A super bowl win is never a guarantee.”

    yep… totally called it. 😛

I predict the Chiefs’ offensive line is going to get destroyed in this game. Vita Vea didn’t play in the first meeting. Patrick Mahomes and his receivers will have three turnovers. Brady will score a touchdown off each turnover in this game, and he will open this super bowl with a scoring touchdown drive, which would be his first touchdown scored in the 1st quarter of a super bowl in his playing career. In the end, the Bucs will win by 11 points.

  22. He could easily replace another ex-Titan–Clowney–and would undoubtedly be more productive. Still, I think he’s going to end up with the Bills, Chiefs or Bucs if he’s chasing a ring.

Browns played one team this season on that list… and beat them!

  24. Watt won’t be satisfied until all 32 teams show interest due to his massive ego. This guy needs more attention than a teenage girl.

I fell on the floor laughing after I read that part. The Browns who lost to the Jets? Who barely beat a bad Pitt team against their back ups? Who backed into the playoffs? All of a sudden we’re worried about the powerhouse Browns beating superior teams after a cupcake schedule and good effort in the playoffs? Good grief! What’s in the dawg food in Cleveland?

  26. I’m a lifetime Titans/Oilers fan. Don’t need him, don’t want him. Enjoy Green Bay or wherever.

  27. Dude might have a resurgence, but I’m afraid it’d be another Clowney situation. Watt isn’t close to the player he was years ago, and TN needs too much defensive help for one aging DE to handle. If they can get him cheap, sure, but I’m guessing he’ll be anything but.

  28. Whoever gets him will wish they did not have him if they over pay him. I think the wear and tear is catching up with Watt. I could be wrong but we will see.

  29. Mayfield never shows up in big games. Just like Watt. The browns will be lucky to get 9 wins next year. One playoff season and y’all sound like the Vikings sklol fans. Good luck but we all know what’s coming down the factory line of sadness.

  30. Really hope my team doesnt overpay for him looking at his recent play and stats seems he is nothing but average to below average at the moment

Didn’t he just beat the Steelers in the playoffs?

  32. Zero chance he signs with the Titans. He may be upset with the current direction of the Texans but he strikes someone who wouldn’t join a division rival out of loyalty.
