Urban Meyer helped Trevor Lawrence plan timing of his Pro Day and surgery

Jaguars coach Urban Meyer says he reached out to Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence upon learning that Lawrence needs surgery on his non-throwing shoulder, and the two of them discussed the timing of the Pro Day-style workout Lawrence did last week, prior to his surgery.

Meyer said on NFL Network that he didn’t think Lawrence should wait to have his surgery after Clemson’s March 11 Pro Day, because then he might not be fully healed in time for training camp. Meyer also pointed out that Lawrence didn’t need to throw for scouts at all, but Lawrence said he wanted to.

We did a Zoom call with him, and I asked him – there are three choices you have. No. 1, you can wait until March 11 Pro Day – but now you are getting near August [for a recovery time],” Meyer said, via the Florida Times-Union. ‘That’s getting late because it’s a five-month recovery. It’s a six-month injury. The second thing, you can not throw. He’s probably a good enough player, but he said, ‘I’m not doing that.’ Third thing, I said why don’t you just grab the ball and go throw for a little bit? I’d like to send our coordinator and passing-game coordinator to watch. They’ve never seen him. I’ve seen him, so he said, ‘Let’s go.’ ”

Meyer hasn’t come right out and said the Jaguars will draft Lawrence with the first overall pick, but there’s little doubt that’s their plan. The other 31 head coaches would have no need to strategize with Lawrence about his offseason schedule.

  1. The only thing Urban Meyer cares about is Urban Meyer. Lawrence should do what’s best for him, not how this might effect training camp.

  2. Well, it looks like we can stop blaming Trevor’s agent for this dubious decision

  3. Did he really need Urban Meyer to tell him, “Gee, it makes sense to do the surgery earlier so you’ll be healed from it earlier too!”??

  4. Or it’s a fiendishly clever Jags’ smokescreen to minimise/delay the bidding war for Fitzmagic.

  5. Why would you call it tampering if everyone knows he’s making him nb1 pick? Like few years ago when you had free agent signing second after the 4.00 pm. No tampering? Urban is just doing what he thinks is the best for his team.

  6. I think Urban Meyer is a self-serving phony. Although I’m not a Clemson fan, I feel sorry for Trevor Lawrence knowing he will soon end up a Jag.
That said, my advice to those crying “tampering” and “collusion” is to find a good dictionary and read it, because neither of those terms have anything whatsoever to do with the circumstances of this particular story.

  7. If the kid is going to throw before the draft regardless, then it makes sense to get it out of the way before the surgery. More time to rehab. To my mind, the kid’s options were: don’t throw, throw ASAP so surgery can be ASAP. Waiting for the normal pro day delays his healing.

  8. Getting the surgery done and doing the rehab should have been first on the list for Trevor – he has been the number one pick for over a year now and does not need to throw for anyone.

  9. Hevent #1 overall picks in the past actually had deals in place well before the draft? Regardless, this is certainly not tampering. I think he simply should have had the surgery early and not done his pro day. Whatever though, he’s still going #1…and there’s a 99.9% chance the Jags will be the team making that pick.

  10. When he’s not making horrific personnel hires, he’s tampering. Off to a very Urban start.

Isn’t this borderline tampering? Nice to see Urb still playing by the ‘rules’.

No, Lawrence isn’t a member of the NFL yet and nobody ones his rights, and he’s no longer a college player either, so who is he tampering against? They have the #1 pick so they can announce they are drafting whoever they want with that pick at anytime and begin contract negotiations.

  12. This isn’t tampering. There was no tampering and everyone knows it. Meyer is the last person who would ever tamper. In fact, millions of people are calling him telling him just to tell him that they know he didn’t tamper! No tampering.

  13. I’m sure there are rules about how much contact you can have with a potential draft pick but I don’t know those rules so I’ll assume they were followed. I’ll throw out there that most of you obviously don’t know the definition of tampering and someone even said collusion? Ha.

  14. Wait, this offensive coordinator and passing game coordinator NEVER WATCHED Trevor Lawrence before??? Talk about a disaster of a team waiting to happen. Stick to college Urb….

  15. Maybe this is all a big fake-out, and Urban is really interested in one of the other QBs. So he plays buddy-buddy with Trevor and gives him bad advice. Note to Trevor — you’re not in Kansas anymore.

  16. You might want to look that word up again in your dictionary.

    Collusion ?

  17. Urban loves him some Urban so there’s ALWAYS some story like this where he’s reaching out to give his invaluable opinion even when it’s a no-brainer decision. (Like anybody would have advised him to put off this surgery?)

Being ready to fully participate in training camp his rookie year IS what’s best for him.

How is it bad advice or going to negatively impact Lawrence at all? Nobody is going to care about him getting a fairly routine surgery on his non throwing shoulder, and he’s going to be ready to go when camp starts. He told him he didn’t even have to throw, but if he wanted to throw he was better off throwing early snd then getting the surgery rather than putting it off for a month or so.

  20. This kid is going into the draft, he’s not in a contract. He’s also not in the NFL.

So the kid can do as he wishes. Legally anyways. Stop with collusion claim, you’re embarrassing yourself

  21. Wasn’t his pro day enough for the Jags? If you’re going to pick him, let him have the surgery now and heal so he’s ready for when you need him. Sorry if that smacks of common sense!

Obviously they’ve seen him throw before, but they haven’t seen him in person which is something you kinda want to do before investing the #1 overall pick in someone, even a guy who is one of the most highly regarded prospects of all-time.

Lol what? He’s having surgery today which is why his Pro Day was moved up.

  24. Urban is a snake and the next time he is really looking out for the player’s best interests will be the first time. That said, he isn’t wrong. There is literally no reason in the world why Lawrence needs to throw. Everyone has seen him throw in actual competition over the last several years and we get the point — he is the best quarterback in the draft. Might as well do the surgery and maximize the recovery period. Strange that Lawrence’s people are getting that point across to him.

  25. Urban is a legend in his own mind. News flash boomer, it doesn’t take a guru to schedule a workout. Looking forward to an epic failure foray into the NFL. I can hear the health issues already starting to simmer.

It’s always amusing how often people use words and have no idea what they actually mean.

  27. Fanboys Gone Wild. Lol! Tampering? Collusion???? Not even close. You kids crack me up with your Jenious football IQ. Thanks.

OC Bevell and passing game coordinator Schottenheimer have been BUSY coaching NFL PLAYERS the last few years. Pretty sure they don’t have time to kick back and watch a college football game on Saturdays…

  29. Considering this is on the NFL website, it’s not tampering:

“ NFL teams can begin conducting phone or video interviews with underclassmen Jan. 25 and “seniors” on Feb. 1, Pelissero noted. The last day for telephone or video conferences with a draft-eligible player is April 28, the day before the draft.”

  30. If it was a known injury that needed surgery why not do it immediately? Instead you have a team/coach/agent that is undermining your well being. Surgery should have happened before now. you have a what seems like great talent but when he goes against men that are heavier, faster than college and dialed in it doesn’t make sense because now they to have something to target

  31. Interesting how he reached out to offer unsolicited advice. Certain level of arrogance to think that he knows more than the guy’s own advisors.

  32. To be honest, with Mahomes and Josh Allen ruining the show in the AFC for the foreseeable much like Manning and Brady did, he should pray he goes to the NFC or he’ll end up the next Phil Rivers… Even DeShaun Watson wants out of the AFC.

  33. I’m no fan of Meyer but I don’t understand the negativity in these comments. Head coach with the #1 overall pick has been communicating with the probable #1 pick. There’s no tampering here, borderline or otherwise.
