Report: Patriots had no “real interest” in Carson Wentz

The Patriots still need a starting quarterback for 2021. Matthew Stafford wasn’t interested in going to New England, and the Patriots never were in on the Carson Wentz sweepstakes.

Michael Giardi of NFL Network reports the Patriots had “no real interest” in acquiring Wentz.

That comes as no surprise.

It always felt like Wentz was headed to Indianapolis and a reunion with Frank Reich, and the Colts perhaps were the only team with real interest.

The Colts got their new starting quarterback for a 2021 third-round pick and a 2022 second-round pick that would become a first-round pick if Wentz plays 75 percent of snaps or 70 percent plus and Indianapolis earns a postseason berth.

It leaves the question of where the Patriots turn to find theirs.

Former Colts quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who started two games for the Patriots in 2016, is among the free agent quarterbacks. The Patriots could attempt to trade for one (Jimmy Garoppolo? Deshaun Watson? Marcus Mariota?) or draft one (Mac Jones?).

  1. It is probably Mariota, and everyone knows it. But any leverage the Raiders had in building up any trade value is disappearing. Competition is dropping quickly. Bears, WFT? Maybe, but doubtful. So, probably a late round pick, which will be okay for the Raiders who will have to cut him anyways. Jimmy G is simply too high a salary with his injury history. He would have to be cut and have a reworked salary tied to playing time.

  2. unless you’re dense you realize it’s going to be Jimmy G. and he’ll be hurt by week 4.

  3. Wentz had one really good half a year in 2017. That’s really it. That half year made him a lot of money. If he rides the bench for the rest of his career in 2022, at least hes set.

  4. Why would they with so many superior qb options becoming available?

The next domino to fall may be linked to their solution for 2021 and/or 2022.

Your team just ditched two precious picks and surged back into a cap hell for an oft injured qb named Wentz who can’t even hold Jimmy’s jock.

    Congratulations.

What if they are forced to cut JimmyG on June 1 and BB signs him to lesser/short term deal?

BB would have had the yield in the original deal and only loaned him for a few years to SF. lol

  7. . . . of course, if BB doesn’t do SOMETHING about our junk TEs, nothing will matter. Why is he sticking with these brittle losers?

  8. No surprise there. BB readily admits he is a tough coach to play for. And people supposedly in the know are saying that Wentz does not like to be coached…BB and Wentz were never going to mix well.

  9. I’d say the era is gone when most of us looked to New England as the template for how to make personnel decisions. Now, we’re looking at Tampa Bay. What changed?

  10. I don’t think Belichick is willing to wait for a rookie QB to develop. He already sent Garappolo and Brissett away. Marriota is a good QB, but a little injury-prone. Don’t think he’ll get him, but I think he’s desperately trying to trade for Russell Wilson.

  11. Really seems like the Pats aren’t interested in anybody. Feels like they’ve made no significant moves in the past 5 years or so. And if they are interested in somebody they are only willing to give away a bag of peanuts.

  12. Can anyone ever remember BB drafting a QB to be a starter? No, cuz it’s never happened. They were all backups. Even Brady was drafted to backup Bledsoe.

Umm, a pandemic? Players didn’t report to camp until July 26. It was the worst year possible to move to a new qb and the Newton McDaniels decision was terrible. But, that’s over with now.

TB has 30+ free agents and primadonna Brady will want an extension at 30+ mil per soon via Giselle’s demands. Bank on it. I like BBs way a lot better for sustainability because, you know, he proved it for 20 years. lol

Did you at least apply for college? My goodness.

NE has had 3 good drafts in a row and have over 60 million in cap space now more than Indy by a mile.

With Hightower, Chung and likely Edelman back, explain how all of this is somehow bad?

We’d love to be graced with your swift crirtical thinking skills.

  14. Get Fitzmagic and trade up in the draft for a good QB of the future, but what do I know? Pats don’t have what it would take to land Watson or Wilson. Belichick isn’t getting any younger. He probably doesn’t want to wait around for a guy out of college to develop, but if he has a plan, he’s not tipping his hand. I can’t wait to see what this year’s Patriots will look like. Can it possibly be worse than last year with Cam Newton? At least get a guy who can make the throws. They probably had no interest in Carson Wentz because he is a project.

    Not really.

First, Garoppolo was definitely drafted to replace Brady. It is what woke Brady up from his awful previous postseasons while the media ignored those. BB didn’t and worked DAILY with JimmyG immediately in 2014. That is a fact. JimmyG was the only one we know of. Stidham? i think so which is why each were the only 2 lone backups behind Brady in 20 years.

With Brady, BB was working with him and Bledsoe knew it, but it didn’t get ramped up until week 3 of 2001.

But, BB was on the hunt to ditch Bledsoe’s crappy contract that was signed before BB arrived.

All you have to do is read BBs scouting reports on players and you can see why he wanted to develop and promote Brady.

Jimmy Garoppolo wasn’t drafted to be a back up.

This is well known to people who actually know about football.

  17. The Patriots are going to go after Mac Jones or Marcus Mariota. And, if Belichick brings back Jimmy, he’ll be sticking a fork in his remaining coaching years.

Tom Brady showed up and is now running the show.

  19. Like the chump patriots would admit it now. Everyone of their joke fanbase would be celebrating Wentz as the greatest signing in the history of sports if they got him.

  20. Days after the SB, Stidham starts work with Mahomes’ personal trainer, and Dolegala given a contract too. What that tells you is Pats ain’t panicking. I’m sure they’d risk JimmyG or Dak if free, or consider Jones etc if they falls to them. But no megatrade for Watson/Wilson. Maybe a free/cheap Mariota hired as competition for the youngsters, or even Cam/Fitz as vet cover. But they ain’t got their knickers in a twist like poor ol’ salty ariani. Every QB computation has been set a mathematical value and they’ll stick to it. Whoever is QB, Bill is moving to a more D-oriented team like Brady’s early years, and we already saw that shift in last couple of years.

  21. The Patriots should bring back Cam as a backup or starter depending who they draft. They could draft Mac Jones, Jutsin Fields, or Trey Lance to learn from Cam for a while or start in Week 1. The Patriots can still bring back Cam as a backup because he is great in the locker room and can serve as the backup to someone like Jimmy Garoppolo, Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota, Deshaun Watson, Ryan Fitzpatrick, etc.

  22. I like Mariota. Graded out over 75 3 of last 4 years on PFF. He’s only 27, smart, coachable, affordable, good size with wheels. Belichick said you need a top 16 QB to win the SB. I think he could be a top 16 QB with the right coaching.
The more I read on him, the more sense it makes.

  23. Mitch Tribusky. I think I’ll keep posting this until it happens on some QB needy team (no not Chicago) 🙂

  24. Every QB in the known universe has been “linked” to the Pats. Belichick will make his move when he makes it. Too many people forget the multiple fine teams he has put together year in and year out. Brady may be the GOAT QB but he’s not a one man band. The Bucs were loaded before he got there, as was the team he first started for.

  25. BB undervalues the QB position, imo.

The Patriots are in for a rebuild, and will probably go through a series of QB’s in the years ahead. It’s an unusual position for them to be in after having QB stability since the mid-90’s.

I don’t see them realistically competing for the division in the years ahead. It will be the Bills & Miami at the top.

  26. First off, Wentz is bad. The PATS are too wise to go for him.

Second, Garappolo may know the system, but he is bad. Bad mechanics. Bad injury history. Then there is the $$$ that the 49-ers contract commands. RUN from JG!

So that leaves the question – do the Pats try a rental again, such as Fitzpatrick? Or do they go for a longer term solution, and who is that?

The Pats haven’t had a top 15 pick forever. QBs chosen in the 1st round rarely turn out. I hope that they are too wise to use that pick on an unknown quantity. So the PAts must find a QB in FA!

  27. Everyone needs to draft a QB and stop thinking you are special and can change Wentz, Foles, Andy Dalton, Tyrod Taylor, etc., etc. They are all great people but they are not consistent enough for the NFL. They are all great backups. “they are who we, thought they were” Wentz isn’t a leader in the locker room. I’ve been reading those rumors for years. I hope I can get beer and water today in Texas.

  28. Mac Jones + whatever vet falls to them on the cheap to keep them competitive while Mac learns the offense

  29. Trust is Belichick to find a QB, after all he did win 6 SBs with a no-name QB who is now retired – OH WAIT….

  30. Realistically the only team that could have confidence that Wentz would do well for them is Indy with the Reich connection. I have no idea what NE is planning next, but I doubt they change their MO and pay top dollar for some FA.

  31. Cheapskate Bill won’t pay for a quarterback so therefore the Patriots will not be winning often enough to make the playoffs until he leaves or gets fired
