Jason Licht on Tom Brady extension: We’d like to keep this going

Before the Super Bowl, Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians said that he would not be surprised by quarterback Tom Brady signing an extension that would keep him under contract beyond the 2021 season.

Winning the Super Bowl would only seem to make it likelier that the two sides find a way to keep things going and General Manager Jason Licht was asked if an extension is in the cards when he made an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show. Licht said he’d keep his conversations with Brady “under wraps right now” but signaled that something was in the cards.

“It’s a possibility,” Licht said. “He certainly didn’t look like he slowed down any this year. That’s a possibility and we’ll have to see how that goes. . . . It appears that he really had a good time this year winning the Super Bowl. Likes our organization, likes our coaches, likes our head coach and ownership and we certainly love him. Usually when you have those two things going for each other, it’s a match made in heaven so we’d like to keep this going.”

Brady is set to make $25 million during the 2021 season with a cap hit of $28.375 million after earning $3.375 million in incentives thanks to the Bucs’ run to the title.

  1. Plot twist- Brady wins the next 6 super bowls and racks up 7 with the Bucs and 6 with Pats. Enters HOF as a Buccaneer. Patriots fans heads collectively explode.

  2. Who can blame him? Ol’ Tom still has the juice to play at an elite level and win SBs. Someday, Father Time will nudge him off the proverbial cliff but I don’t see that happening anytime soon. Extend the man.

  3. I just still find it hilarious that he made a total of 28.3 million this year. Lmao, never forget Falcants fans!

  4. He should leave and go to the next team most likely to win! Journeyman SB QB. A tale for the ages.

  5. 28 million is a bargain for the GOAT, especially compared to other QBs who aren’t NEARLY as accomplished.

  6. If he plays 2 more years, it will mark his career for playing 21 active seasons as a starter, minus his 2000 rookie season and 2008 season with knee injury. That means if you divide his career into 3 periods, he has a case for 3 hall of fame careers. If someone like Kurt Warner – who had about only 6 excellent seasons with some mediocre filler years in the middle – is in the hall of fame, surely Brady’s longevity can double or even triple that accomplishment.

From 2001 to 2007 period marks his transition from being a “game manager” with killer instinct to MVP level with 4 SB appearances and 3 titles.

From 2009 to 2015 period marks his statistical prime with another MVP with 2 SB appearances and one title. He was carrying the team on offense.

From 2016 to present period marks his ring chasing period that saw a slight physical decline but compensated with football IQ. He earned another MVP with 4 SB appearances and 3 titles. And he’s still not done. It’s amazing that his best period could be in his post 40 career!

  8. Bill Belichick needs to enter into a Rehab Clinic that specializes in Anger Management and Addictive Behaviors. He, with the OK from Kraft, single handedly ousted the Best SB Winning QB from the Team, while at the same time, had no replacement for him.

  9. He wants to keep it going? Weird, I figured he would want to let Brady walk and then pick up Cam Newton and surround him with a bunch of no name receivers. Seemed to work out well for BB.

  10. Peyton Manning wasn’t physically/atheletically his best when he won the Superbowl Broncos. It was his great leadership that made everyone around him better. Brady has that great leadership like Peyton which Father Time can’t take away. Brady’s physical skills might decline and he still can lead a team to a Superbowl. So many QBs don’t have the “It factor” which Peyton and Brady have. Great offensive leaders even have a great effect on the defensive players. Peyton at the Broncos Superbowl had a great defense and Brady at the Bucs had a great defense. I think both great QBs had an impact on their defenses performance with their leadership abilities. A great QB is so much more than stats (leadership, coaching, friendship, attitude, make the TEAM BETTER = wins).

  11. Now, don’t be greedy, Tampa. Tom needs to go to other places and make championship needy franchises delirious with joy. After all, there’s only one GOAT to go around.

    False. Stidham.

There was a pandemic. They were fine having a bridge year, but if your prospect loses offseason work, the growth was stunted. No one wanted to get rid of JimmyG after 2015. In fact, no one said a word.

If he drafted a qb, signed one way earlier or traded for a veteran back up, then why didn’t he? The plan was always Stidham regardless of moron anti-BB bashers. It’s why he was the lone Brady back up in 2019.Nothing has changed regardless of media speculation or other lies.

To try to sell people on BB knowing Brady was a FA so they could rebuild properly as some senile error is childish and stupid, not to mention BB had JimmyG ready to go. Talk to Kraft on that one. BB was prepared for what he wanted.

Again….Covid. July 26 was the first day the staff could work with Stidham. In some way, he was worse off than any rookie and he hadn’t played in a year.

Once they extend Mr Giselle and TB slides into cap hell thinking Brady will be like MeBron in Miami atrracting no income tax talent, it won’t matter. This isn’t the NBA. Your base comes from the draft not hotshot, selfish FAs.

NE is trending up, TB with arrogance and ego trending down after this season.

  13. Brady has always said he’ll quit “when he starts to suck.”

We’ve got some time to go then.

People need to stop with this comparison. The year Manning won the SB with the Broncos, he was carried by his defense. He missed 7-8 games during the season and the Broncos didn’t miss a beat. He ended the season with more INTs than TDs. Broncs would have won the SB with anyone at QB that year.

While the Bucs had some great offensive players and the defense played well down the stretch, there is no way they win the SB without Brady at QB. Comparing Peyton’s last season to Brady’s past season is embarrassing and needs to stop.

    2019 Bucs offense – 3rd
    2019 Bucs defense – 29th

    2020 Bucs offense – 3rd… Brady = 2 more points per game
2020 Bucs defense – 8th.. defense gave up 6 points less per game

  16. Another Brady accomplishment people don’t talk about and the 49ers fans don’t want to confront is that Brady as a Patriot started more games than Joe Montana and Steve Young as 49ers. Brady played more playoff games and won more games than Montana and Young combined. And, of course, he won more Super Bowls than Montana and Young combined. And he’s still not done.

Just by numbers alone, I just don’t know how the 49ers fans can still argue that Montana is better than Brady. Even if they complain and wipe out Brady’s first 3 Super Bowls as being a “game manager” and carried by Belichick’s defense, he as a Patriot and Buccaneer still went on to make more Super Bowl appearances and won the same amount of 4 Super Bowls. I just don’t know how they slice it and make a case that Montana is better.

Look, I love Joe Montana and he was one of the greatest quarterbacks ever but I just don’t see how he is better than Brady based on stats, wins, titles, and longevity. Another thing is versatility, which is very often overlooked, that he threw touchdowns to more different receivers than any QB ever. But the 49ers faithfuls still hang on to the argument that Montana never lost a Super Bowl as if that’s superior to someone advanced to MORE Super Bowl appearances and won MORE titles. That just makes no freakin’ sense!

  17. If Licht wants more than a 2021 #BucsRedux, he’ll get the deal done soon. As has already been said, so much of Brady’s value is his leadership. He made the Bucs believe they could succeed. So many players have talked about his constant encouragement in person and via frequent texts.

Just as with the Patriots, you won’t hear any of his teammates (current or former) say a bad word about him. Belichick won’t talk about Brady, since he plays for another team, but when he is able to, I’m sure he’ll be as complimentary about Brady as Brady has been about him.

Cool story. Now rank the QBs year over year. How does that rebut what i said? Part of the reason the Bucs defense was ranked so poorly in 2019 was because Winston threw 30 INTs. Rankings clearly don’t tell the entire story, unless you are trying to suggest the offense in 2020 was just as good as the offense in 2019? Does anyone really believe Brady lead an offense with equal performance to 2019 by throwing 7 more TDs and 18 less INTs than Winston the year before?

  19. Improved defense had every bit as much to do with the Bucs winning the Super Bowl as Brady.

  20. They hadn’t won a playoff game in 18 years. Of course they want to keep it going. Wouldn’t you?

Hate to break it to you but if one off-season can stunt your growth so much that you can’t even play as a starter in your 2nd year then franchise qb is most likely not your calling.

And the Bucs have been killing it in the draft the last few years. If comparing Pats drafts to Bucs drafts the Bucs dominate.

Bucs are in win now mode. They’ve already got one SB title with Brady so they will do everything possible to win at least one more. Cap hell in a year or two will be worth it to them.
