David Carr makes key revision to article suggesting the Raiders should trade for Russell Wilson

USA TODAY Sports

On Monday morning, NFL.com posted an item from David Carr in which he suggests that the four teams on Russell Wilson‘s short list should have called the Seahawks “yesterday” about a trade. Curiously, one of those four teams — the Raiders — currently employs David Carr’s younger brother as its starting quarterback.

Even more curiously, David Carr’s article quietly was revised after the comment was spotted and publicized.

The original version said this: “If I’m one of those four teams, I’m picking up the phone yesterday.” The new version says this: “If I’m a QB-needy team, I’m picking up the phone yesterday.”

Surprisingly, the article contains no indication that it has been revised or edited. The original timestamp of 11:25 a.m. ET remains, and it has no editor’s note or other indication that any change was made. It therefore creates the clear impression that the article never said, “If I’m one of those four teams, I’m picking up the phone yesterday.”

It did. And apparently David Carr did indeed receive a “WTF?” text from Derek, prompting the change to surreptitiously be made, so that no one would notice that David believes what anyone else with a basic understanding of football knows: Russell Wilson would be a major upgrade over Derek Carr.

Moreover, the revision makes no sense in its context. The prior paragraph explains that Wilson has said, through his agent, that he’d only accept a trade to four teams (Raiders, Bears, Cowboys, Saints). Thus, any “QB-needy team” other than those four would be wasting its time to call the Seahawks yesterday, today, or tomorrow.

Still, David Carr clearly had to do some damage control once it became obvious that he was suggesting that the Raiders throw his brother overboard for Wilson. And David Carr tried to do the damage control in a way that controlled the perception that no damage had been done.

  1. As a Chiefs fan, I hope Derek stays in the faiders city of the year for a long time.

  2. Should have left as is. He’s an analyst doing his job. If his brother doesn’t like it, then get better

  3. After that Super Bowl performance If I was Andy Reid I would have made that call Yesterday.

  4. We’re talking about the Carr brothers, not the Manning brothers. These guys don’t have a single playoff win between the two of them.

You’re not wrong. Maybe forward that nugget on to NFLNetwork in hopes they’ll stop referring to the elder one as Super Bowl Champ David Carr. They’re not wrong either, but really, are they right?

  6. Good job, Florio!

Even the big brother knows Wilson is an upgrade over his little brother!

  7. Too late to pull Derek out from under the bus, David. Man, that’s your brother, dude.

  8. oh another legality. David Carr was the same dummy in year 5 he was in year one.. 76 sacks year one most from running out of bounds behind the line of scrimmage. highlight watching David get his haircut on TV.. lol

  9. Hmmm, wonder how David Carr got that superbowl ring without winning playoff games? 🤔

  10. There is no doubt that a QB who has won a SB, appeared in another and gets his team to the playoffs virtually every year is an upgrade over Derek Carr’s record regardless of what his name is.

It is David’s job to be an analyst not a cheerleader for his brother. I’m the oldest of 5 brothers and ALL my brothers know that if I am asked a question I’m going to tell the questioner what I think, not what my brothers want to hear.

It’s not like he said Derek is a criminal or a druggy, he basically said if you think you need a better QB you should be calling the Seahawks about Wilson.

  11. The Raiders would be better if it was a straight up trade. They are not better off if you factor in the loss of cap dollars and draft picks it would take to get Wilson.

  12. The NFL is a QB’s league. You need a consistent QB to win.
It would appear David has seen Derek play.
The Raiders would be better with a consistent QB.

  13. He knows his brother sucks almost as much as the Raiders franchise. Just like we all do.

You better hope Russell isn’t coming to Vegas. You’re dynasty is OVER the minute Russ comes into Aliegient. Nearly swept you last year. That gimmick eventually gets solved. The K-Gun, Run and Shoot, etc. it all gets solved eventually.

see Tampa Bay SUPER BOWL. and Niners should’ve beat you, too in last SB

  15. He’s not wrong the Raiders would be better with Wilson

90% of the teams would be better with Wilson

  17. After Mahomes was absolutely destroyed in the Super Bowl, the Raiders should focus on re-creating the Bucs defensive personnel and scheme.

    Gruden has the offense humming.

Carr brothers don’t interest me. My vote is with Mariota.

Maybe Watson and Wilson can go east and Carr winds back up in Texas. Think about. He’s very religious. Perfect with with their front office and their new Qb-coach to be.

  18. Guy doing his job as an analyst. Making an observation that Wilson is a better ( something that is true) in comparison to your brother is part of the job.

  19. >>> Moreover, the revision makes no sense in its context. Beyond David just correcting his statement to make Easter brunch with his brother less awkward, his revision still makes sense since the Bears are the only team on Wilson’s shortlist that definitely need a QB. Yes Wilson would be an upgrade at the position, but would the upgrade cost them too much compared to who they have right now?

And also him keeping it vague can apply to the Saints if Brees is retiring, and the Cowboys if Dak isn’t healing quick enough. Maybe they’re QB needy, maybe they’re not.

  20. David was right the first time. Derick is a high end bottom tier to low end middle tier starter.

  21. The Raider problem is not Carr. It’s the defense – no pass rush, their best LB is an Undrafted FA out of a school no one ever heard of, and their scheme was garbage. Even with that crap defense they played the Chiefs better than anyone short of Tampa.
You cannot win with a QB Sucking up 20% of your salary cap. Wilson made his bed. Now he needs to lie in it.

  22. Derek Carr isn’t going anywhere, so all you jokers can get over it. The only thing Russell can do better is scramble, which we all know doesn’t last. Derek will be back to sweep KC whether you like it or not.

  23. Chiefs are 26-2 going back 2 years and are 7-2 in the playoffs over the last 3 years and 5-0 against the AFC playoff teams. Playoff teams are teams that are actually good. How’s your record? Does that Falcons game ring a bell? Yep, the league sure is picking up on KC’s “gimmicky” offense… KC loses a SB without 3 starting lineman and our offense is solved. Of course that opinion explains why you’re a raider fan. Inability to see reality, as in you haven’t been to the playoffs in 20 years. And you still can’t get in despite the league opening it up to 7 teams. But this is the raiders season… the off-season. Enjoy it! Because reality will once again hit you come September when the good teams start playing football again.

  24. It was probably obvious already when David drafted Wilson with his #1 pick in the family fantasy league.

  25. As a Chiefs fan, I hope Derek stays in the faiders city of the year for a long time.

Aren’t they the only team that beat y’all til the Superbowl?

Sure pal. And WE are the ones unable to see reality, right? oh and BTW, you sound scared to me.

  27. The Seahawks would be foolish to trade Wilson to any NFC rival, so the Raiders are the only sensible option from his demands. I still think the Jets could offer by far the best solution with Darnold going to Seattle along with picks and, perhaps a couple of other players.

I’m pretty sure Russell and Ciara would enjoy New York city. Sorry, I mean New Jersey. lol

  28. David Carr may be an analyst, his job, etc., but any brother in Derek’s position would have good reason to be very annoyed. Surely that statement could have been worded differently to avoid urging the Raider’s to trade for Derek’s replacement.

David carr was a backup quarterback for the New York giants when they beat the patriots.David carr had never one a playoff game as a starting quarterback. Eli Manning won the playoff games not David carr.

    —————————————————————————————

Please do me a favor, clarify, he has a Super Bowl ring from being a backup to Eli Manning. Nothing against David carr but you make it sound like he contributed to the super bowl win. He saw maybe 5 snaps the entire year. This is not to take anything away from him, but you should clarify. He did not win a super bowl. He was on a team that won the super bowl

  31. Way to sensitive. Then again he was crying on camera during the Seahawks mollywhopping the raiders in London a few years ago. As for the eyeliner, didn’t the emo fad go away?

  32. Too much is being made about what David said. The revision makes sense as the Raiders the only team of the four that doesn’t need a QB.

  33. Derek threatened to block him. And without Derek, no one cares about David.

  34. Yes, Wilson would be a major upgrade over Carr. But the team would be much worse after the trade. Even Wilson doesn’t want to spend the rest of his career running for his life.
You crappy fans sell Carr too low. He’s been the most functional piece I’m the franchise from Day One.

Raiders have a solid O-line, especially if Trent Brown is healthy. They’re much better than Seattle. Miller is solid, Hudson is all-pro caliber, Gabe Jackson is solid, and Incognito is good when healthy, but Simpson played decently well for a 4th round rookie, and hopefully we re-sign Denzelle Good, who could start at G or RT.
