Mike Mayock: “Jury’s out” on Trent Brown staying with team

Shortly before Raiders General Manager Mike Mayock held a press conference on Wednesday, there was a report that the team was considering a trade involving right tackle Trent Brown.

The timing all but guaranteed Mayock would be asked about Brown’s future with the club and he faced the question during the session. Mayock said that the “jury’s out” on whether Brown would be back after playing 10 or more snaps in 14 of his first 32 games as a member of the team.

“When he’s healthy, in shape and ready to go, he’s as dominant as any tackle in football,” Mayock said, via Josh Dubow of the Associated Press. “He proved that early in the 2019 season. Since then, it’s been kind of a roller coaster. What he needs to do more than anything is get himself in the best shape of his life and come out ready to prove that he is a dominant tackle in the National Football League. That’s all it takes. If Trent gets in shape and stays committed, there’s not a better talent out there.”

Those are big ifs based on Brown’s first two seasons with the Raiders and moving Brown would clear $14 million in cap space. The Raiders are also set to release right guard Gabe Jackson, so they may wind up looking very different on the offensive line in 2021.

  1. The Raiders have a lot of very young players on their roster, and they all want to make a lot of money. So you want your big money veterans to be great leaders, because that’s who your young guys are going to copy. Coaches can teach technique. I’m not convinced they can teach work ethic.

  2. See….. what happens when you lose the Patriot way??? and make all that big coin??? You get fat and happy…

But it only lasts for a short time…. at some point you have to “DO YOUR JOB” to stay in the NFL

  3. When you get the “Jury’s Out” commebt from the GM about your status with the team…

Not only is the Jury NOT out…they have returned, given their ruling to the Judge… and gone home…

    Trent Brown is gone.

  4. I wonder what are the odds of the Raiders making the playoffs this year? Usually 3 straight years of being .500 or below can get you canned. Especially if you have multiple 1st round draft picks multiple years. Can Gruden survive a 4th year w/o playoffs?

The NFL usually doesn’t see a team this overhyped and underperforming that’s not the Cowboys.

It’s a good thing that Mark Davis has a crush on Gruden, otherwise Gruden would be in the hot seat.

  5. The greatest draft evaluator in media became one of the absolute worst draft evaluator’s as GM. Idk what the heck happened with Mayock but he used to be the most trusted name in player evaluations for me and then he got a job with the Raiders and has pulled so many duds.

How are the Raiders overhyped? No one in the media or the majority of fans have predicted them to win anything or even to be 1 of the better teams. Now overhyped and underperforming would be if they were to sign a backup qb and then that qb claims it’s a super team but that only happens in Philly.

Mayock does not have final say in their draft picks. It is unfair to to pin the draft record on him. Gruden shares the majority of the blame.

  8. That’s quite the inditement of Gruden to hire a draft genius like Mayock and not let him have the final say.

  9. Time to move on! Hopefully you’re long standing calf strain doesn’t flare up the first game on your new team. You are a great role model for the young. Lol

  10. Trent Haynesworth. Such a waste of natural talent. You can’t teach a guy to be a 6’9″ road block. He has everything he needs to be a legend.
    No game.
    No shame.

  11. This guy was a mess since he signed with us. He’s overweight so always injured. Cut him today and start over.

  12. BB traded for Brown, got one good season out of him, but he knew what kind of player he was. Brown leveraged it for a huge contract from the Raiders and then mailed it in. BB got a comp pick.

Brown is the type of guy who should not be signed to more than a one year deal. Can be dominant when motivated.

  13. It’s amazing how many players thrive in the Belichick structure, get paid, then terribly underperform.

  14. “The best ability is availability” and Trent does not provide this anymore. Cut bait and move on Raiders, let him be someone else’s overweight underachiever!

I think that is a testament to how well coached and prepared the Pats are, but offensive lineman are a different breed of player. They have to consume high calories to have the body to stand up to edge rushers and if that isn’t matched with conditioning, they end up on a sack highlight reel quick.

  16. Remember when the Niners wouldn’t re-sign him beacuse of work ethic and body conditioning issues, then he claimed it was “bullcrap” and the Niners slandered his name. Then admitted “I feel like I don’t need to watch film,” he said. “I play my game and use the techniques my coaches teach me and be able to work on daily. And people have to come play Trent Brown.”

and now Mayock after paying Trent to be the “LeBron James of RT” are finding out that he has bad work ethic and doesn’t stay in shape. oops.

  17. Where’s the talk about cutting Joyner? Mayock’s 2019 FA class was garbage. And so was our 2020 FA class, with the exception of Kwiatkowski and Agholor. Big money deals on Collins, Littleton, and Nassib didn’t wok.

  18. “If you broke we can fix that but if you lazy I don’t need you around me”

An actual tweet by Trent Brown three minutes before I made this post….
