Matt Nagy: Darnell Mooney has the ability to be Tyreek Hill or DeSean Jackson

Bears coach Matt Nagy thinks his team got one of the most talented receivers in football in the fifth round of last year’s draft.

Darnell Mooney, who caught 61 passes for 631 yards as a rookie last season, could develop into one of the best big-play threats in the NFL, in Nagy’s view.

“I’ve been around Tyreek Hill,” Nagy said in an interview with the Chicago Tribune. “I’ve been around a young DeSean Jackson. I’m telling you right now, this guy has the complete package and has the ability to be compared to them.”

Nagy said he could tell from Week One of last season that Mooney was going to be special.

“This kid is the real deal. I’m serious,” Nagy said of Mooney. “You want to talk about an exciting player? I’m just so blown away at the things this kid does. Coming in here with no offseason, coming into training camp, playing that first game against Detroit and showing us that the lights weren’t too bright for him. Amazed at his mental ability to handle this offense from the get-go. To put it into action, to make big plays. . . . It’s exciting as a coach because he has a rare element of speed, combined with route-running, hands and passion. And commitment. You take all that and you say, ‘My gosh, we got this guy in the fifth round? Are you kidding me?’”

The speedy, 5-foot-10, 176-pound Mooney has a similar athletic makeup to Hill and Jackson. But as a playmaker he still has a long way to go to justify Nagy’s comments.

  1. This comparison has nothing to do with Mooney; it’s about appealing to Russel Wilson. Nagy might as well say “Oh, you want to play for an offense like the Cheifs?? Come to Chicago, we can run that here, see we’ve even got our own Tyreek Hill!!”

I’m sure the Seahawks are listening too with a shopping cart like “we’ll take him too while you’re at it.”

  3. If he’s trying to impress Wilson, who just trashed his O-line in Seattle, he’d better start to somehow start bragging up the Bears suspect O-line.

  4. I saw a handful of Bears games and was very impressed with Mooney in each one.

But I’m an Eagles fan who watched every game DeSean Jackson played in his rookie year, and Mooney wasn’t nearly as explosive as Jackson right out of college.

Mooney looked like a much more complete receiver than the rookie version of Jackson though, and I think he has potential to be a very good player for a long time.

  5. Does it really make sense to put Tyreek Hill and DeSean Jackson as equals? Jackson used to be very effective, like eight years ago, and the game has changed quite a bit since then.

  6. In years 2 and 3 combined Tyreek had 22 total TDs and DeSean had 20 total TDs. Tyreek had more receiving yards (2662) at 16.4 a pop and DeSean had less (2212) at 20.3 a pop. Yes, they were both incredible playmakers after their rookie years so it makes sense to compare Mooney to both of them. Then again, Nagy was there for both of them. He would know.

  7. Jackson was never the player Hill is. Mooney isn’t Hill, if he was he would shown it on the field. Hill takes screen passes for 70 yards.

  8. DeSean Jackson was just a deep threat he couldn’t run the short intermediate routes. Tyreek Hill is the complete package. Mooney ran a 40-yard dash time of 4.38 seconds at the combine but he’s only 176 lbs., the kid has great hands. Tyreek Hill is a freak who is strong and fast. Mooney remains me of Cliff Branch…

Player A- 61 receptions, 593 yards, 9.7 yards per catch, a season long of 49 yards and 6 tds

Player B- 61 receptions, 631 yards, 10.3 yards per catch, a season long of 53 yards and 4 tds

Player A is Tyreek Hill rookie season and player B is Mooney rookie season,so what were you saying….

  10. Tyreek Hill isn’t the complete package. How many jump 50/50 jump balls does he win?
