How about a Deshaun Watson for Kyler Murray trade?

It’s one thing for slappies like me to spitball about a potential Deshaun Watson for Kyler Murray trade. It’s another for John McClain of the Houston Chronicle to suggest it.

A week after McClain wrote that the Texans should accept reality and trade Watson, McClain argues that the Texans should approach the Cardinals about a Ken Stabler-Dan Pastorini-style quarterback swap.

It’s a move that instantly would make sense for the Texans and Watson. Houston would replace one franchise quarterback with another, and Watson would be reunited with DeAndre Hopkins and J.J. Watt, on a team that had twice the wins as the Texans in 2020. The Cardinals. however, would have to be willing to embrace Watson (and his contract) in place of Murray, the first overall pick in 2019 who has shown flashes of superstardom.

Then there’s Murray. As McClain notes, Murray has to be on board with joining a franchise mired in dysfunction. After all, Murray has the ultimately leverage — he can quit football and go play baseball. (It currently would cost him $11.6 million to walk away form football for baseball. If the Texans trade for Murray and if Murray leaves the sport, the Texans would have the right to recover the unearned bonus money.)

If both teams and both quarterbacks would be OK with it, the next challenge becomes fixing the right price for a trade. Would a straight-up deal do it? Or would the Cardinals have to add more to the pile?

From Arizona’s perspective, the argument against adding more could be that they’re giving up Murray and the three years left on his rookie deal for a contract that pays out $10 million this year and that has a huge $35 million salary in 2022.

McClain opens his item by explaining that he hadn’t considered a Kyler-for-Deshaun until J.J. Watt joined the Cardinals. That’s when the light bulb first flickered for me.

It’s a long shot, to be sure. But even crazier things have happened in the NFL. Indeed, it feels like, in the coming days, even crazier things will happen.

  1. Murray is medicore and has baseball in the back of his mind. Make a killing off draft picks or let Watson ruin his own career and not play.

  2. The Texans would have to give up more than Watson because, even though he’s better , Murray is on the rise and his cap hit is waaaaay lower.

  3. If the Cardinals agree then Kyler should just pick up his bat and go play baseball because his football career would be over in dysfunctional Houston.

  4. No way Murray would approve. Why would he? He is smart and will always keep that small baseball possibility stirring in the background to help his leverage. And…I don’t see Watson being a really huge upgrade right now…

  5. Texans would have to be out of their minds. Murray is a one dimensional injury plagued career waiting to happen.

  6. Dakota as a quarterback is not worth the steam off a fresh pile;

    he has won nothing, done nothing and beaten nobody;

  7. again with the threat of murray going to baseball. he has already shown he is a 35m qb. baseball theres no guarantee of even making the mlb. he’s not going to olay baseball any time soon

  8. Miami still makes the most sense to me. Playoff ready team who happens to have an “extra” top 3 pick to trade, plus a young QB to send back for Houston to keep or flip for another first round pick. Tua, #3, #18, #50, and Ogbah/Lawson to give Houston the defensive starter they wanted in a trade. Miami keeps the high 2nd round pick so they can take either a lineman or receiver who falls out of the first round.

  9. 0 chance of it happening, same thing as chance of Dak for Watson for the above commenter. It would be nice if columnist and commenters had more thought process than what gets accepted on Madden.

  10. “A” for creativity. From the Texans perspective I like Murray better than Tua or Darnold or a 1st round pick not named Trevor. From the Cardinals perspective I’m interested if Watson is on board with it.

  11. We can all spitball countless Trade scenarios. WHEN Watson is traded (which he will be), it will be for a BEVY of draft picks to build a future for the franchise. Sam Darnold or Tua is more like it.

  12. And maybe the Bucs trade Brady. And maybe the Titans trade Henry. But it isn’t happening.

  13. Hilarious for both sides. They the same plus or minus a few inches. Neither gets a ring by themselves.

  14. Well, Bill O’Brien isn’t the GM/HC any longer. He would have traded Watson for a 5th round pick to Arizona – in a heartbeat.
The new regime – still have to see what Caserio can do, but he’s from the BB school of management.
Don’t see them being that foolish – yet.

  15. To me, the Bears make the most sense as a landing spot for Watson. Three No. 1’s, Khalil Mack and Foles or Trubisky, Texans choose, seems reasonable and doable. Texans should like this because it gets Watson into the other conference. We’ll see.

  16. McClain showing signs of senility…Murray plus 2 number 1s might do it

  17. That means the Cardinals would become the Arizona Texans. Watt and Hopkins would probably hate that trade. It wouldn’t be a good fit.

  18. Did people skip their math 101 classes in middle school? Have you seen Watson’s salary?

Why are people so dumb? If you want the Cardinals to a pernlennial 6-10 kinda team, super, go for it.

Makes me laugh how teams try to build a winner the complete opposite of what you do, thinking it will work.

  19. why don’t they just outright release deshaun from his oppressive contract and sign kap? just spit ballin’ y’all.

I think Kyler Murray would laugh about this and move on with his day.

Well put. Kyler strikes me as a guy who is very confident in his own ability & would prob make the Texans a better team.

    great question

Millennials want so badly to stake their claim for the attention, they will overrate athletes in the process.

  22. A trade for a qb on his rookie contract to build around? Now this is a more likely scenario.

i’d say Deshaun Watson and 5 first rd picks for Kirk Cousins

    ————————————————————————

    Cut back on the moonshine…
The Vikings are the only ones who want Kirk Cousins! I know the Texans are a trainwreck in their decision-making process but there is no way that they are that incompetent… Kirk Cousins is an overpaid joke!

I’m sure HOU would do that in a heartbeat, I’d expect CHI isn’t dumb enough to overpay like that. people forget how valuable #1 picks are concerning the cap and the 5th yr option.

No one is suggesting that, but this is unquestionably the greatest trade bonanza in NFL history. You could compare it to Marino demanding a trade in 1985, but that doesn’t even equate because of the salary cap.

He’s a top 3 NFL quarterback who’s only 25 and is under contract until his age 30 season, and anybody who trades for him is only responsible for his salary going forward because the Texans have already paid out the signing bonus that made up a huge portion of the guaranteed money.

There’s just no equivalent to that ever. There’s certainly risk because of his injury history, but otherwise he’s the most valuable player to ever be on the trade block in the history of the NFL (except maybe Herschel Walker and Ricky Williams, but those were gross overpays by the Vikings and Saints, respectively).

  27. Being a sports writer seems like a good job. Like a weatherman. You can be totally wrong tomorrow and still keep your job. Must be nice.

  28. As a Cards fan I would love to have Watson, he is better than Murray but it’ll never happen, Cards cant fit in his salary.

  29. Top 3 qb? In which league? Brady, Mahomes, Rodgers, Allen, Wilson, Brees, Ryan, Jackson…he is barely top 10. Would rather have Herbert or Burrow at this point. Cheaper and more room for growth. Without the hassle.

  30. trade watson for luck and hope the easterby/cesario/callyboy braintrust can coax him out of retirement. just spit balling. #hiremepft

  31. top 3 qb? heck even top 5 qbs dont only win 4 games and only throw for great numbers during garbage time

  32. People forget that the Texans sucked last year. A lot of DW stats were in cone from behind situations. Stats make a Pro Bowler not a great QB.

  33. I understand McClain trying to help his friend get out of town, but Kyler Murray is already a better QB than Watson, and he’s not as close to his ceiling as Watson is to his. I’m a big fan of Watson, the human being, but he hasn’t demonstrated anything close to being an elite QB, yet people talk about him like he’s Patrick Mahomes or Aaron Rodgers. I’m hoping he’ll get to that stage at some point, but there’s a pretty wide gap.

  34. This is the Texans we are talking about. How about Brett Hundley and a second for Watson instead?

  35. Watson to Cards, Murray to Dallas, Prescott to Seattle, Russell to Chicago, draft picks to Texans. Any other QBs we could throw in the salad?

I was laughing my butt off at the other comments on here until I got to this one. I must have that Covid-19 brain fog thingy, because this suggestion would be the true blockbuster trade of all-time. I actually like it. Each of the other teams could give the Texans one or two of their draft picks!

  37. The two of them together last year went 12-20. What difference would it possibly make if they changed teams? They are a couple of highlight reel QB’s who do not win games.

Jesus, crud like this is why no one takes fans seriously. This is such a horrible trade that no way unless the entire MIA FO is knee deep in illicit substances does this make any sense. Heck, why didn’t you suggest they throw in Howard and half the defense too?

  41. McClain should stick to fighting off terrorists in office buildings and airports. Why in the world would the Cardinals make that trade and send more to Houston? Why would Murray agree to a trade from a team on an upward trend to go to a team that is in a downward spiral that doesn’t look to be ending anytime soon? With the lower cap why would Arizona trade a QB on his rookie contract for a guy (malcontent) due making over $140M in the next five years and who only recently signed that contract? This is perhaps less believable than A Good Day to Die Hard.

  42. Trade a prototypical QB for a undersized can’t play in this league QB … that’s laughable.

Is that what you say about a QB that hasn’t missed a game in his two years in the league and was 29 yards short of passing for 4,000 yards? By the way, Murray in his second year passed for the same number of TDs that Watson did in his second year. Yeah, one dimensional.

  44. Kyler Murray is fools gold. I don’t think he’ll be in the league more than 3-4 more seasons. Seems unreasonable today, but things change incredibly fast in the NFL. He’ll likely struggle to live up to hype and he doesn’t have the frame to be durable, this will lead to Arizona deciding not to pick up a fifth year option. He’ll hit free agency, get a big contract in a new place seeking to rekindle his promising career, but more likely to drastically under perform. Enter his second year on that contract with a ton of pressure. He’ll get benched, then cut at end of that season. He’ll then face a backup role with a third team or looking at other options. This happens to so many players, but fans will make every excuse that this one is different. It won’t be.

  45. How about NO!!!! AZ is more than happy to stick with Kyler Murray. Murray has superstar in the making written all over him as dude is the only QB ever to throw for over 3500+YDs throwing for a sliver under 4,0000YDs while also rushing for 800+YDs and 11 more TDs, no QB had done that before. Murray is a beast on the field and is primed to skyrocket in his 3rd year. Murray will be an elite top 5 QB for a long time to come he just needs a bit more time to do so. AZ also has 3 more years to build around Murray on a rookie deal, AZ would be foolish to trade for a QB on a bloated veteran deal given how gifted n talented Murray is who they ALREADY HAVE under contract.

    ————————————

Yea it’s not like Kyler Murray didn’t win rookie of the year, make the pro bowl his 2nd season tossing for a hair under 4,000YDs completing 67.5% of his passes for 27TDs to 13INTS a 94.3 passer rating while rushing for 820YDs and another 11TDs giving AZ both a top 6 passing n top 5 rushing offense. It’s also Not like Murray wasn’t PFTs #1 ranked deep passer as a rookie or posted an elite PFF grade of 82.8 ranking as the #1 rushing QB in the NFL all in just his 2nd NFL Season.

O wait no Murray literally has done all of those things his first 2yrs in the NFL and is looked at as one of the NFLs brightest young star QBs, in fact he was chosen by more pundits as the #1 NFL QB Under 25 To build around. You come off as just a bitter Seahawks fan who’s mad SEA is currently in melt down mode burning down around u as they discuss trading Wilson which is the only player keeping them from being a 4-5 win team. With in the next couple of years Murray will pass Wilson up as the NFCWs best QB. Remember Murray has started his NFL Career carrying the Cardinals entire offense between him n Hopkins almost single handily and is by far AZs most electric playmaker while when Wilson came into the league he was carried he didn’t do the carrying as he relied on having both an elite all time great defense n elite rushing offense which carried Russ n the offense early on his career. Murray has been far more impressive as the guy carrying AZs to victories than Wilson was his first few years in the league, and that will show even more the older Murray gets as if you compare 22-23yr old Wilson vs 22-23yr old Murray their is no comparison Murray is the much better QB this early on in his career than Russ was at his age.

  47. I bet Watson is the day one starter for..

    The Houston Texans.

What the Texans want in trade is too much for any smart team to give up. NO player is worth three #1s a couple #2s and a starter or two? Miami is the only team that makes sense but I still wouldn’t give up what most are projecting it would take.

Brees is a surefire HoFer but at this point in his career, you can’t tell me you’d take him over Watson.
Matt Ryan and Deshaun Watson both led 4-12 teams this year. Both teams defenses were bad, but Watson’s supporting cast wasn’t anything even remotely close to Julio, Calvin Ridley and Todd Gurley.

  49. Mike Ditka (if he were coaching) would trade all of the 2021 and 2022 draft picks for Deshaun Watson!

Anyone remember what happened to Pastorini???
    —————————————————–
Yeah, he was an average at best QB(50% 103 TD 161 int 56-61-1 record) that got traded.

  51. Let’s remember that AZ took Rosen in the first round in 2018 and Murray #1 in 2019. This isn’t the way it’s supposed to work. You don’t spend a top 10 pick on a QB then give up on him immediately.

I know the article is just speculation but still, some of these front offices act like they’re playing Madden.

  52. That would be one lopsided trade, with the Cards getting the good end of it. No way this should happen…

  53. NFL GM’s have proven they’ll deal a large amount of draft capital for disgruntled players. A QB should be different, however. He’s the team leader most of the time. If Watson wanted out so badly, why didn’t he refuse to accept a new contract just a few months ago? Some GM will give Houston 3 or 4 very high draft picks for Watson and it’ll cost him his job too when it doesn’t work out.

  54. Bad Idea. The reason the Cards ditched Josh Rosen for Kyler Murray was because he was deemed to be a perfect fit for Kliff Kingsbury’s Air Raid offense. I can’t picture DeSean Watson thriving in this type of offense. Watson’s strength is not in short passes and bubble screens, his strength lies in pushing ball down the field with big plays. Another thing is why would Arizona trade for his massive contract when they have another year before they need to extend Murray? It’s not like Watson is some huge upgrade in this style of offense. At the end of the day, Watson will either be playing for the Houston Texans or sitting the season out. My money says it will be the latter.

Watson is a good player, not great. I think he is way over rated. If you put Brady, Wilson, or Rogers on the Texans last year instead of Watson, I think they win more than 4 games, and that’s a fact. If people think Houston is going to get a great haul or him, they’re crazy. If he was still on his rookie deal, maybe. But any team that gives up multiple first round picks, and agrees to pay his salary, well, they will be losers for a long time.

  56. If the most low-key of elite qbs wants out, no one worth their salt will agree to a trade to that wasteland. It’s more suitable for a Sam Darnold, Alex Smith or Jimmy G.

  57. Although neither one is anything close to a franchise QB, Murray still has potential. I really can’t see the Cardinals getting close to being a playoff team only to trade a potential franchise QB one day for a below average 4 win malcontent who will destroy any locker room cohesion they currently have.

  58. Get rid of the Cards’ coach. A run of the mill college coach.
    Not NFL caliber.

  59. How about both teams just trade uniforms, coaching staffs and cities?

  60. Jeeeez people are digging deep for ideas on what is happening to watson. It’s either dolphins or jets or 49ers
