Devin Funchess takes pay cut to stay with Packers

As more teams work to gain cap space, one player who opted out of the 2020 season has agreed to a reduced pay to return in 2021.

According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, wide receiver Devin Funchess has agreed to a pay cut of roughly $750,000 to remain with the Packers. He signed a one-year deal worth $1.2 million in base salary last April. But Funchess decided to opt out in late July, posting on Instagram at the time, “Family is first.”

Funchess last played for the Colts in 2019, when he played one game and caught three passes for 32 yards before suffering a broken collarbone. Though Funchess was designated to return that year, he never came off IR and missed the rest of the season.

A former Panthers second-round pick, Funchess spent his first four seasons with Carolina. He caught 161 passes for 2,233 yards with 21 touchdowns in 61 games with the franchise.

  1. That is his only option. I get family first but the guy jack knifed his own career by opting out. He will be cut before the season and thats the end of the line for him.

  2. When he signed with indy it looked like they had a low risk high reward type but after his year injured in indy and then a year out of football it’s likely Funchess is never going to be more than roster depth.

  3. Was it a forced pay cut so the $$$$ could go towards Rodgers’ new contract, or did he willingly give up the cash?

  4. Good for him, I guess. He could’ve been a difference, who knows. He was certainly part of the plan last season, and his decision to sit, which I respect, sort of mucked things up. Such is Covid. The past is past. There are only new normals.

  5. Opted out. I forgot all about that. He may as well opt out this season as well. He hasn’t played in 2 seasons. No way he makes it back.

  6. Oh Bejesus do they have a clue what they are doing. Gutt is the worst GM in football. Hey Gutt how is that one pick from last years draft working, the one who is sitting on the bench contributing nothing to the team but getting paid. About the time Rodgers goes this guy will be going to. Stupidity reins on this staff

  7. Ya should be hearing from Rodgers about where’s my money???? Dak cannot be the king I must be the king, pay me or I’ll start bitching again

  8. Gute is a joke, how about drafting a WR instead of moving up and taking a QB that hasn’t dressed all season or another lacy clone with the second

  9. We will see how he looks in camp this summer. Risk-free move for the Packers with some cap space relief added in.

Devin wants another shot and has something to prove. This is a win-win move all parties.👍

  10. Good move by Devin Funchess, he’s not going to find a better situation to try and revive his career.

As for the Packers, they are still getting another big bodied receiver who’s now two years removed from playing any meaningful football.
His size for the roster is a little redundant and they still need a speedy slot.
Hopefully that’ll be addressed in the draft.

On the plus side, Devin, who’s very active on social media, looks like he’s stayed in good shape (that’s always been a question) and there’s the fact that he’s still only 26 years old.
    Low risk, high reward.

    Just another camp body?
    We’ll soon see.

  11. Folks who say “he’s’ been out 2 years, no way he can be successful” are simply posting their own reaction has they been the topic of discussion. Anyone, anyone, can turn things around with grit and determination. We just need to see how hard he is willing to work for it.

I’m fond of an old saying from Kurt Hahn, the founder of Outward Bound: “there is more in you than you know”.

  12. Really? Didnt know Devin Funchess was still playing football. Must be a ” big contributor”

Almost the end of the line. With all of the connections in BUF or WFT he will get at least one more shot with one of those teams.

  14. I remember in 2018 when he opted out during the Panthers Lions game…think he had 4 or 5 drops!

  15. Aaron Rodgers was very excited about adding Funchess last offseason:

“Adding Devin, who is a veteran guy who has made plays in the league for a number of years. And he’s hungry coming in. It’ll be fun to see where he’s at physically. From his football IQ, we’ve had some really good conversations, him and I”.

  16. He’s going to be great! Or not. I’ll hold my opinion until he actually plays some ball for the Pack. But hey, by all means, don’t let that stop the rest of you from hopping up and down and deciding the man’s entire career, right there from mom’s basement.

  17. Honestly didn’t know he was a Packer. Seems like a cheap enough deal to see if he can recapture what he was a few years ago. Teams need contracts and chances like this one.

Thats the thing, everyones so worried about that ONE pick, those people that tend to focus on that choose to as they want to use it to bash on Gute, but ignore all the other picks and signing his made which helped GB being a win away from the SB his first two years.

TT got slamemd for taking Rodgers instead of help for Favre, Do you think Packer fans are upset today they choose him over guys like, Heath Miller, Roscoe Parrish, or Reggie Brown?

Lol you must have hurt his feelings. It’s hilarious whenever anyone points out his mistakes, bad takes or his multiple names he feverishly downvotes the post with all of his names. Poor kid hopeful he can get his own place and maybe a friend or two someday.
