Urban Meyer wants to build Jaguars defense around the defensive line

The Jaguars are heading into the start of the new league year with the first overall pick of the draft and voluminous salary cap space.

We’ve got a pretty good idea that they’ll be picking quarterback Trevor Lawrence with the first pick and head coach Urban Meyer may have given a hint about the plans for later in the draft and that cap space on Tuesday. He noted that the Jaguars “really struggled in a lot of areas” on defense and that he knows which spot he wants to address first.

“I always believe you build your team around the defensive line, and then you move backwards — so that’s what we’re going to do. . . . There is one commonality of great teams: they have great defensive lines,” Meyer said, via the team’s website. “You can’t avoid that. There are ways to hide other things, but you have to have a strong defensive line. We’re committed to do that here.”

Meyer said he thought the team has “some great young pieces” in defensive end Josh Allen and defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton, who Meyer knows from Ohio State. They also have recent first-round picks Taven Bryan and K’Lavon Chaisson, but Meyer’s words suggest there will be some new faces up front in Jacksonville.

  1. Wow! What a novel idea! I bet that none of the other 31 teams have ever thought about this.

  2. What’s the over/under in years before he bolts due to “family” when he’s not winning. I see him as another Saban/Spurrier/Kelly

  3. It is a better thought than trying the terrible D and strong O like the Falcons. Its tough to win games if you must score on every posession to have a chance.

  4. I can’t remember the last time Meyer coached a team with a losing record. The question is, will he stick around once he is on then end of some losing seasons or will he go the “health” route and retire yet again?

  5. No, you build your team from the Offensive line. Especially when you draft a franchise QB with the first overall pick (see Joe Burrow). NFL is an offensive league. Not to say Dline is not important.

  6. “I can’t remember the last time Meyer coached a team with a losing record.”

I can’t remember him EVER coaching a team where recruiting and scheduling didn’t put him 85% of the way to having a winning record. He’s a great college coach, no doubt, but how often is Ohio State under any coach going and lose multiple games in the same season to Purdue, Illinois, Rutgers, etc? (Because to finish below .500 that’s what would have to happen.)

  7. Very nice idea. They will be lucky to win 1 game this year and he will “retire” for health reasons in 2 years.

  8. Josh Allen is a rush edge, but Taven Bryan and the nameless, faceless rookies he mentioned are terrible. What is going to do, sign a bunch of free agents? Guy sounds nuts.
