Brian Flores: I’m excited to work with Tua Tagovailoa

Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa had an up-and-down rookie season — one that looks a lot worse when compared directly to offensive rookie of the year Justin Herbert.

But Tagovailoa was still the No. 5 overall pick in 2020. And even with Miami in the middle of Deshaun Watson trade rumors and head coach Brian Flores saying he’d welcome back Ryan Fitzpatrick, Flores said Thursday he’s excited about Tagovailoa for 2021.

“You think about his situation last year, coming off the hip and throwing him into the fire,” Flores said, via Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. “Started nine games and made a lot of improvement throughout the season. Had some up and downs. I’m excited about the Year 1 to 2 jump.

“No OTAs. Different training camp. You guys know me. I’m all about the development of players and helping them develop, and helping them get better. This time, in the offseason, is really going to be helpful to him and all the rookies. I’m excited about working with him this offseason.”

Asked specifically about his reaction to rumors the Dolphins could add a veteran quarterback (one presumably named Watson, but Flores cannot mention that name because it would be tampering), Flores replied, “My reaction is I’m excited to work with Tua.”

“That’s where my interests are,” Flores said, via Hal Habib of the Palm Beach Post. “That’s where my excitement is.”

Flores noted he had lunch with Tagovailoa on Wednesday and that he’s confident in the quarterback.

Tagovailoa completed 64 percent of his passes for 1,814 yards with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions in 2020, compiling a 6-3 record as a starter. But Flores also used Fitzpatrick as a “relief pitcher” of sorts when Tagovailoa struggled in a pair of games, benching the rookie for the veteran QB.

Armed with the No. 3 overall pick in 2021, Miami could potentially package Tagovailoa in a deal to acquire Watson.

Unless and until that happens, Flores should be excited about developing the No. 5 overall pick from just last year.

  1. So are fans of every other team in the AFC East. Keep sticking with him for a few more years, please.

  2. The Dolphins had the fifth pick in the draft last year and took Tua! Herbert was there to be had. Miami met with both quarterbacks, questioned them, viewed tape and after all their investigation went with Tua. No one in Cincinnati is asking if Burrow is the guy or not. No one in San Diego is asking if Herbert is the guy or not. The Eagles who drafted much later than Miami drafted Hurts and traded away their franchise quarterback after seeing him. The Dolphins want Fitzpatrick back who is a starter just in case? The Dolphins have a serious problem evaluating players especially at quarterback. If Tua doesn’t make a huge jump this year the Dolphins will finish last in their division. New England is flush with cash and are a qb away from being competitive. They could sign Fitz and kick our but. If we don’t get Watson and Tua is what we are afraid he is. The Dolphins will be back in mediocrity hell.
Miami hasn’t made a good decision at quarterback since 83. Tannehill? Well we cut him didn’t we?

  3. It’s always a crap shoot. The knock on Herbert was his personality. They said he was an introvert and not a leader.

  4. Deshaun Watson is under contract to the Texans. Flores can’t say much due to tampering rules. Either the Dolphins can ride and grow with Tua or trade for Watson. I think Brian Flores is smart enough not to tip his hand either way. Flores has to be careful not to hurt Tua confidence. Right now Tua is the ‘Fins QB and Watson is the Texans QB.

Step away from the ledge. It’s going to be okay. Herbert and Burrow weren’t coming off season ending injuries. No one was expecting Tua to come in and light it up. Maybe he’s a bust, but give it more than a year. I don’t understand Dolphins fans that aren’t used to players busting by now. I’m hopeful this one is different, but if it’s not? Life goes on, same old thing for the past two decades.

Also, Tannehill was traded, not cut. You also don’t start an entire rebuild around a 30 year old QB that hasn’t proven to be “the guy.” I loved Tanny, but it was time for him to move on.

  6. It is so tempting to use the 3rd pick on one of the QB’s in the draft. Smart thing is to give Tua a fair shot.

  7. Tua is not the guy. The last left handed qb to even make a pro bowl was boomer esiason. You need a strong hip to throw the ball in the nfl if you don’t believe me go see baker mayfield. Mayfield is Tua with a strong serviceable hip but Tua doesn’t have one and it shows in his throws. Tua has no confidence and his passes lack velocity but Miami fans will keep saying he needs time and a full off-season. Herbert was there and Grier passed. Big blunder just like signing van noy for 10 months. Fins are clueless and it starts with the owner.
