Brian Flores would love to have Ryan Fitzpatrick back in Miami

When the Dolphins benched quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick for Tua Tagovailoa last season, it was widely assumed that Fitzpatrick would be leaving in free agency this offseason. But Dolphins coach Brian Flores says that’s not necessarily the case.

Flores said today that the door is very much open to Fitzpatrick returning to Miami this season.

“We would love to have him back,” Flores said.

Realistically, it’s hard to believe Fitzpatrick would want to return to Miami. He was disappointed to lose the starting job to Tagovailoa, and he’s surely prefer to go somewhere where he would have an opportunity to start.

But if he shops himself around in free agency and can’t find a team that’s willing to give him that opportunity, perhaps he would return to Miami. If he does, he’d be returning as the backup — but if Tagovailoa were to struggle, Fitzpatrick could find himself back on the field for the Dolphins.

  1. You can’t have Fitz back. Rather you believe in Tua or not, you have to see what you have eventually.

  2. Odds are he WOULD have a good opportunity to start at some point during the season with the Dolphins.

  3. Imo only but I think for him and the team the situation in Miami is ideal. Up and coming team where everyone in the organization loves him. He could probably play at times and be the best relief QB in the league. Maybe extend his career by doing so.

  4. Really? After the way you treated him last season. He was the best QB you had by far.

  5. He could start for at least 1/4 of the teams out there and be an improvement. He shouldn’t settle for a backup or transition spot.

  6. I’d love to have Fitz back but we know what we signed up for with him and his quest to play for every single team in the league… it’s a catch and release system.

  7. I want a blue unicorn that flies with sparkles in its wake. I think I have a better chance at that than Fitzmagic going back to Miami.

  8. If I was Fitz, I’d tell him to pound sand… once I had another contract lined up.

  9. Old QB who knows the system and shows amazing flashes of a top ten Qb a few weeks a season…..yes! What team wouldn’t want that option for their back up ?!

Also, Cam Newton will be Miami’s back up this year. Lol

  10. Fitzmagic can only lend his talents to a team for two years. Then he moves on. This is the way.

  11. This is coachspeak and shouldn’t be taken literally. They don’t really want him back. He would be a threat to Tua. Whenever Tua played badly there would be calls for Fitzmagic.

  12. Don’t be surprised if the Patriots come calling. He’s an improvement over who they had last year.

  13. when you think about it, Ryan Fitzpatrick is like a great relief pitcher in baseball. It’s been amazing how he has come in and done so well with so many teams. It reminds of George Blanda, the old QB / kicker the Raiders had.
Blanda had an amazing run as their back up QB and kicker.

  14. When asked isn’t every coach going to say that they want a player back unless he is a total outcast? Flores may be sincere but we’ll see.

  15. If you did you’d have sorted it already. Looking forward to some of that old Fitzmagic in another uniform this season.

  16. The Dolphins and Fitz are creating a new position: Relief Quarterback? Closing Quarterback?

  17. Come to Carolina
we’re already losing-at least it will make the games exciting.

  18. I guess some people forgot the QB’s who people said they suck. The list is long and so is the list of the QB’s who wear the gold coat. Give the kid a chance. Bill

  19. It’s really amazing with one hail Mary and a cross in route by a running back that Ryan Fitzpatrick, who throws as many interceptions as touchdowns, becomes famous with fans.

It was Tua who beat San Diego and the rookie of the year Justin Herbert. It was Tua who beat the Cardinals and their promising young quarterback. Tua did this without quality receivers who could separate from the defenders. Fitzpatrick is being unrealistic to think that any NFL team would use him as their starting QB. The truth is that without an injury to the starting QB Ryan will be watching as the back up quarterback.

  20. Of all Fitz’s outstanding talent his love of the game is the most important.

How about the running game, Flores? Have you given that any thought?

Running game isnt really their biggest issue on offense. Gaskin and Ahmed both played well enough that if they go with those 2 at the top of their depth chart it’s not the worst. Now they could use help on their oline, wr help as Williams not only struggled theres doubt t he can be a future starter and even Gesecki who was expected to take a jump at tight end disappointed and never did. Really Gaskin improvement and finding Ahmed were 2 of the nicer surprises for the dolphins offense last year.

Whats ironic is because Fitz has had an average at best career no one is commenting telling him to retire and saying hes old or made enough money yet if this was a story on Brady, Roethlisberger or any old qb over the years who actually had good careers there would be so many comments how their only doing it for the money or stats.

You are just wrong. Nothing else to say other than Fitz was and would be the best QB on the team. Tua is a below average QB with injury issues. He can not stand up to NFL hits and does not have the talent to start in this league.
