Buccaneers, Tom Brady agree to one-year extension through 2022

Tom Brady‘s first year in Tampa Bay couldn’t have ended any better, and so both sides were eager for a contract extension.

Brady, who initially signed a two-year contract last year, has agreed to a one-year extension, according to multiple reports.

The Bucs and Brady are now contractually linked through the 2022 season.

Although there’s no word on the finances of the extension, it presumably lowers Brady’s salary cap number for 2021, which will help the Buccaneers keep some of their free agents, and then guarantees Brady some money in 2022. Brady has generally not driven hard bargains in his NFL career, first with the Patriots and now with the Buccaneers, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him make another move like this a year from now to lower his 2022 salary cap hit.

Brady, who will turn 44 in August, has shown no indication that he plans to retire any time soon. But this deal makes it a little more likely that when he does retire, it will be with the Buccaneers.

  1. Belidunce must be going bananas! Looks like the Patriots are the laughing stock of the league again.

  2. notice how brady takes team friendly deals and now he has 7 rings…meanwhile in dallas an average at best qb signs for all the money and now his two biggest weapons will both be cap casualties either this year or next…strange

  3. The only way Tom retires is if he suffers a career ending injury or Giselle threatens to leave him if he doesn’t quit and, even in that case, he might think about it for a while.

  4. We all just need to take a minute to appreciate this level of unselfishness. Dude has been criminally underpaid his entire career because he’s chosen to take less to more easily compete for a championship. We’ll likely never see another HOF player handle his business like Brady has ever again.

  5. Love him or hate him, Brady does understand how to win. I am not a huge Brady fan, but damn I respect his style. Dude does whatever he can to better the team. Meanwhile, I’m stuck with Kirk Cousins crippling the salary cap for some hollow stats…it’s easy to see why players clamor to play with Brady and Stefon Diggs begged to be traded…and it wasn’t a coincidence that Kyle Rudolph mentioned everyone EXCEPT Kirk in his farewell letter…

  6. Excellent!!! Wonder if after he finally retires he can enroll in college again and play QB for us. God knows we need a WINNING QB at Michigan again!

  7. When he retires he’s taking a huge piece of my NFL enthusiasm with him. Any man who can go in and change the entire culture of a team and get them “over the hump” his first year there is really someone very special. Love him or hate him but all I know is if he’s playing, I’m watching.

  8. Pretty crazy coincidence this comes out the same morning that Cam re-ups with the Pats. It’s almost like it’s a competition.

  9. The less you drink, smoke cigarettes, eat fast food and fats and sugars the better you will age. The more you exercise, lift weights, eat healthy, drink water and get a good nights sleep the better you will feel and age. Most people don’t do these things. But those who do know that age can be just a number.

  10. Brady’s desire to win and the personal sacrifices he’ll make to get there is unlike anything we’ve ever seen. And no, I don’t wanna hear about how wealthy his wife is; that fact is almost irrelevant. He has every right to gauge his value vs. his peers (all other QB’s) and despite all his achievements he continues to accept less in order to push resources elsewhere. Guy is unbelievable.

  11. 2021 has been the year of good quarterbacks trying to milk every last dollar out of their club, and here we have the best to ever do it presumably taking a fraction of what he’s worth so the team can sign other talent. Go on, you legend.

Brady is so hyper focused on his and Tampa Bay’s success that it wouldn’t surprise me if he was unaware that Cam still played football

That’s comparing apples to oranges. The first 4 years of Dak’s contract he made $2.15M – as the market has shown, even if you consider Dak an “average at best” QB, thats vastly underpaid. Oh, and Tom also has a wife who makes $40M a year; so that makes it a little easier to take those team friendly deals. Lets not act like the GOAT is living off of food stamps.

  14. Looks like a pure salary cap move that doesn’t really mean anything from a practical standpoint. Just shows how desperate we all are for football to start again because we pay attention to this meaningless stuff.

  15. Brady understands what’s important in life … accomplishments, not money. When historians evaluate any field of endeavor, their focus is on what’s been accomplished, not how much scratch somebody has. Jonas Salk, whose polio vaccine saved millions of lives, lived modestly. Einstein solved problems for the government and industry. The checks he got for that work he used as bookmarks. Mozart was buried in a pauper’s grave. But these people are immortal, based on their work. In the realm of football, Brady will be perhaps the ultimate immortal. To his great credit, the understands that as he continues to burnish his resume. Regardless of our allegiance to our favorite team, We should, while we can, enjoy his work and marvel at his commitment to excellence.

  16. Yes!!! #LFG the Buccaneers are here to stay. Great deal for all parties, he just might play until hes 50

  17. Brady is scared to death of retirement because he knows he will no longer wear the pants in his household. Get used to it Tom, that’s the way it works.

  18. And he didn’t even ask for more money! Brady understands that once time passes, when they’re talking about you to their kids, no one mentions how they saw “the highest paid quarterback to ever play the game”. They mention how they saw the greatest.

You’re so right! That’s why Brady signed for the veteran’s minimum of $1m… oh wait, he didn’t.

And how do you explain the net worth of Brady/Gisele at over $750 MILLION? It’s great to be filthy rich to say that money’s not important, but you kinda need to get to that “rich” point first.

  20. No way. JPP stays and Barrett gets a contract.

The key Bucs players will return.

Brady left money on the table in his early years after winning a couple of SBs, before Gisele, so the Patriots could keep the other key players.

  22. I “hate” Brady as a Saints/Brees fan, but man do I respect the guy. He isnt exactly playing for vet min, but he sure leaves a lot on the table.

I was looking on overthecap.com…assuming the cap goes up by about $20 million next year, the Cowboys are already $10 million over next years cap with the guys they’re committed to next year. They’re the only team in the league that is already over next year’s cap

  24. ugh, another year of Brady this and Brady that. Let’s move on to another topic please, this makes the NFL boring quite frankly.

  25. And we are trying to sign some one who declared that they want to “break the bank”.

  26. I’m assuming they converted his 24million to signing bonus and spread it over 5 years. His salary figure for 2022 must be in the 25-30M range. Because there are 3 voidable years , they could easily knock his 2022 number down to around 13-16 Million or so. Of course they’d have a dead money hit of 30-35 million in 2023 but if you get Brady cheaply for 2 more years, who cares.

Drew Bledsoe was Top 3 in quarterback salary when Brady won the first SB. It didn’t hamper the Patriots from winning it all.

So it’s ridiculous notion to suggest QBs need to “sacrifice” salary to win.

  28. He should retire after one more year, you have 7, will be tough for anyone to top that. Enjoy your kids and wife and all your money.

  29. I loved how Russell Wilson was sitting in the suite at the bowl while Brady was winning,,,, again. Wilson is crying like a little baby, Brady is re-working his contract to free up cash to chase another ring. Brady = winner Wilson = complaining loser.

  30. And don’t repeat the baloney that he can do it because his wife is rich. He was doing it long before he even met giraffe and btw, Russell Wilson’s wife isn’t standing in a bread line and neither are the celebrities that rogers and other qbs hang with.

Gisele has earned over $1 billion in her career and has a net worth over $550 million. Ciara is around $20 million. Is Rodgers even married?

I mean, seriously, that’s a pretty big difference when Tom’s salary is pocket change for Gisele…

  32. On JPP going anywhere, if I had a quarter for every time I saw JPP hustle to the other side of the field to make a tackle, I would be a rich man. One of the many reasons why TB won the Super Bowl. Worth five times his weight in a mineral only found on the far side of Jupiter.

  33. Death, taxes and Max Kellerman screaming Brady’s going to fall off the cliff. Book it!

  34. Exactly on JPP. Those stats don’t get recognized because they’re unofficial. He chased Mahomes all over the field.

  35. I wonder if the extension allows the Bucs to acquire a qb who eventually will be the successor when Brady retires? Tom was pretty upset when BB tried that in NE with JGraps who was ultimately traded after showing promise.
