Drew Brees retires from football

USA TODAY Sports

As expected (but in recent days and weeks somewhat uncertain), future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees has retired from football.

Brees announced the decision on social media, with a video from his four kids and a message:

“After 20 years as a player in the NFL and 15 years as a Saint, it is time to retire from the game of football. Each day, I poured my heart & soul into being your Quarterback. Til the very end, I exhausted myself to give everything I had to the Saints organization, my team, and the great city of New Orleans. We shared some amazing moments together, many of which are emblazoned in our hearts and minds and will forever be a part of us. You have molded me, strengthened me, inspired me, and given me a lifetime of memories. My goal for the last 15 years was striving to give you everything you had given to me and more.

“I am only retiring from playing football. I am not retiring from New Orleans. This is not goodbye, rather a new beginning. Now my real life’s work begins!”

The retirement comes 15 years to the day after Brees signed a six-year, $60 million deal with the Saints. He began his playing career as a second-round pick of the Chargers, 20 years ago.

It has been reported that Brees will join NBC. He previously has said that he plans to try his hand at several different things in his post-playing career.

Like most great quarterbacks, he’ll likely be highly successful at whatever he chooses to do.

  1. Too bad he got stuck in New Orleans all those years. Would have been good to see home in a real football town.

  2. Thank you for bringing us a Super Bowl, something many of us Saints fans thought would never happen.

  3. Not many people have made such an impact in a city, a state, a region like you. You have been an incredible inspiration to us on and off the field. We were able to witness “pigs flying” and “hell freezing over”. Bittersweet for sure.
Thank you for everything. We love you!

  4. Drew, you haven’t apologised enough for being patriotic yet. You can’t go now!

  5. A lot of people joke about his arm strength, his contract etc. But in all honesty, he is an all time great. Not very many of these types of players exist in the history of the league. He was fun to watch, and I hope he finds happiness with the next faze of his life.

  6. Thank you for the 20 years of playing in the NFL and letting us watch you play the sport of football. Even though your time as a Charger was short, I always rooted for you. Enjoy retirement and more time with your family now.

  7. For a guy who was not supposed to play again because of a “bad” shoulder, he did ok:). See you in Canton

  8. Words can’t express what he means to his teammates, the Saints, the city of New Orleans and the state of Louisiana. While life will go on, WhoDat Nation applauds you, thanks you,and wishes you nothing but the best!

  9. For old times sake…Drew Brees wants an explanation.

Changing of the guard with quarterbacks continues.

  10. Amazing career. Good person. Total pro. Made the game better. No voting necessary. Congratulations Drew Brees! You’re awesome!

Most underrated talent of the last 20 years.
    ————————————————————-
Underrated? The guy got more accolades than pretty much anyone (including in the middle of games anytime he broke a yardage or TD mark).

  12. Goodbye, good luck and thanks for the memories! Enjoy the next chapter of your life.

  13. The actual announcement was his four kids, at home on the couch, announcing it on Instagram. Pretty neat

  14. Drew loved him some drew.

Nice career but I bet he would have loved BB as his GM and Coach.

    Aaron Rodgers, too.

  15. The only question is if some fool HoF voter will not make his induction into the HoF unanimous for some absurd reason.

  16. NFL poster boy for hanging tail between leg and slinking away apologetically. That’s the enduring legacy of Drew Brees.

  17. As a Saints fan since THEY were born (I’m that old) I can say:

If Obama, Hillary and Trump walked into the bar, I would say “Hey, how you guys doin'”?

If Drew Brees walked in, I would just be a puddle.

  18. I’m thinking he wanted one more year for a farewell tour and to pad more records and Payton & Loomis & owner said no.

  19. Pleasure watching him play. All the very best in your post-football life, Drew.
    1st ballot HOFer, for sure.

  20. See you in Canton. You did the right thing. GET OUT WITH YOUR HEALTH. [Now the Russell Wilson watch begins].

  21. Thank you Drew for all you have done for the New Orleans Saints and the City of New Orleans. You will be missed.

  22. Brees final legacy is throwing the playoff game for Goodells son brady to win. Shows what he is all about. Wonder how much Goodell and Vegas paid him as a final send off.

  23. Great QB. Will miss him in the NFL. Will not miss him crushing Tampa 2 times/season.

  24. Top 10 QB of all time for sure but he hang around too long and ended his HOF career in an ugly fashion.

  25. Great player and a good family man, I wanted him when he left the Chargers but he wasn’t an Al Davis fit. Good luck Drew!

  26. I remember when he came close to beating the Univ of Washington (my team) in the 2001 Rose bowl, “that QB from Purdue is pretty damn good.”

Wow – is he ever. My hat is off to Drew. 100% classy QB.

  27. If he’s joining NBC, I hope Brees replaces Chris Collinsworth on Sunday Night Football.

What? I didn’t say he wasn’t accomplished – I said he’s underrated. Name me a player more underrated over the last two decades. He was perennially an afterthought in the QB discussion behind Manning, Brady, Rodgers – it was a debate when he went to the Saints who was better between him and Daunte Culpepper, afterall – despite leading most significant stats every year

  29. He would have at least 2-3 more super bowls if the defense did not let him down in the playoffs all of his prime years. One of the best ever and will retire with a winning record against Brady…..

  30. No matter what, at the end of the day, we got to witness a great QB. With a solid redemption story as well meshed in. Love competitors! Thanks for the memories Drew!

  31. I would LOVE to see a Jameis Winston-lead Saints team knock off the Buccaneers in the 2022 NFC Championship. But then, I’m a bit twisted.

Not about bb or the pats. This article is about drew brees.

  33. And Brees will apologize five times… Lost a LOT of respect for him. Anyone that apologizes for having an OPINION doesn’t deserve a lot of respect.

  34. Talk about splitting ones emotions. On one level I’m totally bummed that I won’t get to see him skip around in a pocket with those bouncy feet and then step and set to launch a perfect pass. On another level I’m happy for the guy, his family and his city. Talk about a great person and role model that every young man and woman should strive to be. Unanimous first chance selection into the HOF.

    You disparage Drew Brees….
    You disparage Tom Brady…
And yet you sing the praised of Jarrett Stidham….

Pretty much sums up you total knowledge of football

BB is a great coach. Bad GM, though.

Congrats to Drew – great career & one of the league’s most entertaining players in this generation.

  37. You have to wonder if Brady decided not to go to TB if this could have been the year for a fitting swan song for his career (because Lord knows KC fell so flat this year in the SB). Either way, he was a lot of fun to watch, and was part of the revitalization of a city/state wrecked by a natural disaster. Godspeed Drew!

  38. Certainly seems to be a great dad and husband, as well as a class act overall. Huge Brady fan here, but Brees sure accomplished a hell of a lot for his size. Interesting that Russell, another relatively short QB, seems to be who they’re after. Brees sure did run up the stats. Hard to imagine anyone not voting for him on his first ballot to the HOF, where he certainly deserves to, and will, be. Congrats on a terrific career! As for replacing Collingsworth, I like the guy and would rather see Brees replacing someone else. Either way, we’re going to enjoy listening to him….

Congrats on winning The Dumbest Post Of The Day!

  41. Still can’t figure out why in the world the chargers thought Rivers was better than Brees…

  42. Sorry to say that, but there is no point for him to continue playing after seeing Brady will definitely play next two seasons.

  43. Nice career but I bet he would have loved BB as his GM and Coach.

According to Belichick’s believers, it was Belichick who made Brady.

Their reasoning is like this :

#1, Belichick was very smart and not willing to pay big to build WR, RB and OL group of high quality (these Belichick’s believers talk like other coaches love to give fat contracts).
#2, As a result, under Belichick, the talents around his QB was subpar, which left his QB no choice but to move the chains little by little, because they didn’t have receivers with whom they could throw downfield to (Belichick’s believers call it “vision”).
#3, It didn’t work and ruined the career of Kosar and Bledsoe, and most recently Cam.
#4, Brady took over and was able to produce top offense out of the cheap WR group Belichick gave to him.
#5,Belichick’s believers then claimed that it was because Brady fitted Belichick’s system or his vision.

I don’t know how to describe such stupidity, it is like claiming that people from 500 years ago already knew how to make plane, because they dreamed of flying or had vision of flying.

  44. Drew could have probably played another year or 2, if he really wanted to. He could have signed a 1 year for 20-25M but he rather leave the game out on top. Retirement will be great!

  45. thank god i dont have to about brees having the records for td and then later that day hearing brady has it again.🙄 seriously tyvm for the pleasure watching u play gave me. wish u wouldnt have bowed down for your own beliefs brcause ifbu dont agree with the majority but whatever. enjoy retirement from the nfl and im sure youll be great at whatever u do but job one is spending time with your kids. see u in canton in ’26 if im alive…..heart issues

  46. Has to be the BEST free agent pickup of all time (although as an Eagles phan Reggie White isn’t far behind) Drew proved everybody wrong about size, arm strength and mobility needed to be a great QB. He showed the NFL that size didnt matter. You put talent around a smart and accurate QB, you can win. What he lacked in arm strength (which imo he had more then given credit for ie. TB12) he more then made up for with knowledge in reading a defense, accuracy in putting the ball where it needed to be and toughness to stand “tall” in the pocket to deliver it. All the 6’0″ and under great QBs should thank him..Russell Wilson. Deshaun Watson, Lamar Jackson ect. Congrats on a great career..go enjoy your family and charities.

I hope you’re not speaking of Seattle as a football town. It surely isn’t.

  48. News just in. Michael Thomas Stock just dropped drastically with the announcement of Drew Brees retirement.

  49. Whenever I think of Brees or Manning in relation to Brady and Rodgers, I think, well, a couple of those guys got to play in a dome in December for much of their career. Still great, but the numbers are inflated.

To me, it’s always got to be mentioned because too many people underestimate how hard it is to pass in bad weather.

  50. Sad to see Brees retire I enjoyed watching him play. A class act. Hall of fame QB. I was sure he had one more championship to bring to New Orleans.

Winston would complete more passes to the Bucs defense for more yards and points then to his own receivers.

  52. “He previously has said that he plans to try his hand at several different things in his post-playing career.” Sure hope he doesn’t try his hand at designing more pizzas! That was brutal looking!

  53. Awesome career. Disappointed he caved in to the woke social-justice mob though.

  54. Great QB, great competitor, and class act all the way. See you at your Hall Of Fame induction in 5 years, Drew!
The NFL is not as good today as it was yesterday with Drew’s retirement.

  55. I hate to see him leave, football in general lost a living legend today. I had so hoped to see the Raiders and Saints play in Vegas this year. My favorite teams. Stupid Covid. Anyways, I wish him the best. He always seemed like a sincere and top notch guy to me. All the best to Bree’s in his future endeavors, enjoy that family.

  56. As great as he was he had visibly declined.
He was a shadow of himself in the playoffs.
Father Time stops for no one.

  57. Good thing Drew had enough sense to hang ’em up before he started embarrassing himself. His arm strength was visibly diminishing this season & it would have gotten pretty ugly had he kept playing to chase another ring when he clearly was on the decline. Great career & good luck in the next chapter, Sir Drew. !

  58. crazy to think that in 5 years two former Chargers QBs might be inducted into the Hall of Fame at the same time. Both with no rings from their time with the team.

  59. I am glad because I would hate to see him leave with a serious injury. Great career enjoy your retirement.

  60. A hero…check…a tremendous athlete…check…a leader…check…no one better…check…a role model par excellence…check…can’t wait to hear your game day thoughts…thank you and your wife for so much…on to whatever achievements that come next.

  61. One of the top 5 qbs I’ve ever seen play the game. Took the Saints out of irrelevance and into respectability shame that Payton failed him so often.

  62. NFC South is in QB flux. Matt Ryan is in his last year, most likely. Bridgewater is just a bridge. Brees gone. Of course, only Tampa has their QB of the future, still young at 43.

  63. Lost more big games than he won. Strip away all the hype from fawning media and this fact is undeniable: Brees/Payton era in NO was disappointing, with only one SB and so many home playoff defeats.

  64. I guess Mickey Loomis wouldn’t or couldn’t give him the raise above $1 million he needed to play this year.

Seems like a decision that may come to be regretted by at least one of the parties.

  65. San Diego was crazy to let him go in favor of Philip Rivers. The irony being that Rivers retired before Brees.

  66. He was great .

But…. if Brady had reduced his salary “ voluntarily” from 20mil to 1 mil then waited 6 weeks to retire, everyone would be up in arms about circumventing the salary cap.

This will be ignored by all in power.

  67. Vikings were soo close to signing him post shoulder injury, biggest shank out of many yet.

  68. A 1st ballot hall of famer now, but if he came to today he wouldn’t even been given a chance to play. Let that sink in.

  69. Drew is a Good man, Great football player and will be missed.

The song has been sung and it was a sweet sounding tune for the last 15 years.

God Bless you and your family as you move away from being a football player and on to new things.

  70. Has to be the BEST free agent pickup of all time (although as an Eagles phan Reggie White isn’t far behind)
    ==========

Beyond words what those two meant to their franchises.

Brees, from a statistical standpoint, wins by a landslide. Reggie just wasn’t the consistent game-wrecker he was in Philly.

Honorable mention to Charles Woodson. FAR better player in Green Bay than he was in Oakland.

  71. Strip away all the hype from fawning media and this fact is undeniable: Brees/Payton era in NO was disappointing, with only one SB and so many home playoff defeats.
    =========

0 Playoff wins in 39 years before those two arrived in NO.. one of the worst runs in sports history

9 Playoff wins with those 2.. 3 NFCC Games.. 1 Title

  72. crazy to think that in 5 years two former Chargers QBs might be inducted into the Hall of Fame at the same time. Both with no rings from their time with the team.
    ==========

Dean Spanos doesn’t deserve to hoist the ultimate prize.

The man doesn’t even deserve to own the team.

  73. Brees is a big reason why the Saints are still in New Orleans. Yes, he won only one Super Bowl but I’m willing to bet the fans of the 12 teams who have yet to win a Super Bowl would gladly take what New Orleans has had over the past 15 years. All the best going forward!

  74. When John Lennon was asked if Ringo starr was the greatest rock drummer, he responded “He wasn’t even the best drummer in the Beatles”…”we had Paul, who was the much better drummer.” (He went on to say “Not to knock Ringo at all”.)
Like Ringo, Brees was phenomenal. But while he played the league had so many incredibly hard working, well-prepared QBs and effective QBs also played. He would own all the records if Manning, Brady and Favre didn’t play. but sadly, he is like the Ringo Starr of this 4 person group. Not to knock him, he should be extremely proud of he and his team mates accomplished. He was Truly Exceptional and Simply Outstanding.

  75. Drew Brees is going as one of the greatest QBs ever. I still remember that Super Bowl win, such a fond memory and time after seeing how Katrina effected so much. Seeing him retire definitely is an end of an era.

  76. According to profootballreference.com , Drew Brees is second all-time behind only Peyton Manning in game-winning drives and 3rd all-time behind only Manning and Tom Brady in 4th quarter comebacks.

For those of you who think his stats are inflated and not indicative of a clutch quarterback…
