The Patriots have been the busiest team in the league on the first day that free agents are allowed to negotiate deals and their activity has now netted them a defensive back.

Jalen Mills has agreed to a four-year deal with New England. Agent Drew Rosenhaus said that the contract is worth $24 million with $9 million in guaranteed money.

Mills played cornerback and safety during his five seasons with the Eagles. He had 74 tackles, 1.5 sacks, an interception, and a forced fumble in 15 games last season.

Mills joins edge rusher Matthew Judon, defensive tackle Davon Godchaux, and tight end Jonnu Smith as free agents to agree to terms with the team on Monday. They’re also set to get linebacker Dont'a Hightower and safety Patrick Chung back after they opted out last season, so their defense will have a very different look this year.

  1. Pats trying to beef up the D this year. Young QBs on two teams and you need to pressure Allen. Might work.

  2. There goes all of that cap space.

Some solid signings, though. NE has improved. If they had a better QB, I’d be worried, but w/ Cam their ceiling is limited.

  3. Can we trade the fans complaining about the QB? They just parrot the talk shows who know nothing about football. Team went 7-9 while losing several close games with the most opt outs and no weapons on offense and they act like they went 4-12. With all these additions, a full offseason, the opt-outs returning, how can you not be optimistic?

And you also won several close games.

  5. Wow, this is crazy, but I love it! It’s time for the Pats to re-load, and they’re actually doing it! So far, every guy they’ve picked up is pretty solid.

  6. This guy was average at best in Philly. If this is considered an upgrade then that doesn’t say much about their defense.

  7. By Jalen. As with all the other former Eagles from SuperBowl winning team, we wish you all the best. New England…do NOT leave him in single coverage on Stephon Diggs, or the Jets WR and well, Devante Parker either.

    ___

He will end up being a nickel corner/safety. They already have Gilmore and Jones as the starting CB’s. They also have Chung, Phillips, and Duggers at the safety position. Mills can play either CB or safety, so he fits BBs style of player who has versatility.

  9. Addition by subtraction for the Eagles defense. Got sick and tired of the Green Goblin getting burned on double moves!
