The Saints made their deal with Jameis Winston official. General Manager Mickey Loomis announced the agreement on a one-year contract with the quarterback.

ESPN reported earlier in the evening that Winston will earn “up to” $12 million.

Winston ranks 29th on PFT‘s top-100 free agents as the second quarterback on the list.

Winston appeared in four regular-season games in relief of Drew Brees in his first season in New Orleans. He completed 7 of 11 passes for 75 yards.

He will compete with Taysom Hill for the starting job and the right to replace Brees, who announced his retirement Sunday.

Winston has more experience than Hill, having made 70 starts at quarterback. He led the NFL with 5,109 passing yards in 2019 and became the first quarterback in NFL history with 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions in a single season.

His only Pro Bowl came in his rookie season of 2015.

  1. “He led the NFL with 5,109 passing yards in 2019 and became the first quarterback in NFL history with 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions in a single season.”

The only record in NFL history that might never be broken.

  2. And his pro bowl year, he was like the 4th or 5th alternate… several other more preferred players declined before JW was offered the position..
you can often expect his turn overs on the 1st play of the game, the last play before half, 1st drive after half and to end the game…
you could even make a drinking game out of his ‘could’ve should’ve’ been an interception… be sensible though or you may not remember the rest of the day!

  3. I hope for his sake he can “compete” with Taysom Hill for the QB job. I can’t wait to see Jameis vs the Bucs twice next year.

  4. Drew was benched and revived his career with Sean Payton . I see Jameis doing the same. # 1 draft pick, National champ, pro bowler, and 5000 yard passer. Good traits there. Payton will bring out his strengths.
