The Cleveland Browns may have gotten their newest safety at a relative bargain.

According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer, the agents for John Johnson III said that the former L.A. Rams defensive back left offers for “significantly more money” on the table to sign with the Browns.

Exactly what those offers would have been and which teams were offering them wasn’t specified.

The deal Johnson reached with the Browns is reportedly worth $33 million, with $24 million in guarantees over the three-year contract.

Per the report, Johnson “really wanted to play for the Browns and can’t wait to get started” and felt it was the perfect fit” for him in leaving the Rams.

Johnson was one of the top safeties on the free agent market. Johnson recorded over 100 tackles in each of his last two full seasons with the Rams.

  1. An agent always wants you to think they would have gotten their client more money but that the client got in the way of it.

Just say it out loud: “A player took less money to play in Cleveland.”

    I call BS.

  2. Cardinals offered more, but JJIII wanted to go to a bonafide contender instead of chasing the money.

People used to say the exact same thing about the Saints. Things change, and you better accept that because Cleveland’s roster is as good as anyone’s in the league, young, and in a good cap situation. It’s a good place to sign.

  4. This is an absolute home run for the Browns. Proven production and proven leader, fits Woods nickel scheme and more than adds depth. Way better than paying questionable EDGE rushers for more money.

  5. He’ll be missed in LA. Playmaker. I wish him well in Cleveland and I’m glad he’s not playing for an NFC West team.
