49ers to sign Alex Mack

For the second time in the wee hours of Wednesday morning, the 49ers have made a big move on their offensive line.

The 49ers are expected to sign free agent center Alex Mack, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. That news comes about an hour after the news that left tackle Trent Williams is re-signing with the 49ers.

Mack made no secret that San Francisco was where he hoped to sign, saying in February that he’d love to play for Kyle Shanahan again. Mack played in Shanahan’s offense both in Cleveland and in Atlanta.

Kyle is an incredible coach,” Mack said. “He’s an incredible coach, great person, strong motivator and runs an offense that is something that I’d know really well and that I performed very well in. Yeah, that said, they [the 49ers] are a very enticing thing.”

In Mack and Williams, the 49ers have made a pair of aggressive moves to ensure a strong offensive line this season: Mack was the No. 80 player on our list of the NFL’s Top 100 free agents, while Williams was No. 8. Now the biggest question is whether Jimmy Garoppolo can get the job done playing behind that offensive line.

  1. It’s now or never Jimmy. Use that 1st round pick on best player available, and go for it all this year Niners.

  2. Somewhere Russell Wilson and Mahomes just winced for the hits their about to get this season along with the news of the Williams/Mack signings on how their front office failed them

  3. Looks like the 49ers front office and coaches have the utmost confidence in Jimmy G. and his ability to make another Super Bowl run (and win it this time), ignoring all the doubting Thomases out there who think that Cam Newton is a better quarterback than Jimmy G., which is of course the biggest load of rubbish found outside of a landfill. Some of these people even think that Josh Rosen should get the job instead of Jimmy G., which is of course pure hogwash.

  4. Man, the 49ers roster will be better this year than their Super Bowl run two years ago.

  5. “Mack made no secret that San Francisco was where he hoped to sign.”

So you might say he….revealed the secret world of Alex Mack?! *Dr. Evil finger gesture*.

The same experts who think Rosen is better than Jimmy G are the experts who thought Nick Mullins is better than Jimmy G.

Now if only the Niners had a QB.

Jimmy G is 24-9 (including the postseason) as a starter. You need a new team and a new schtick

Buckner, sanders, breida, and Richard sherman have yet to be replaced. All 4 played major rolls in tjat super bowl run. All 4 were unstoppable. Id even throw in joe Staley too.

  9. I think everyone knows Santa Clara plans on tanking again this year for a better shot at drafting an actual NFL caliber QB, but seems crazy to waste money on OL when it doesn’t matter what happens to the tackling dummy under center this year. I’m sure Seattle, LA and AZ fans are happy to see Santa Clara laying claim to the NFC West cellar again. By the way, isn’t it about time for the boy-king to start looking for a new GM and HC with their established legacy of failure?

  10. Dumbest thing this franchise did was trade Buckner. You don’t trade a guy that good. He is almost Donald level good.

How’s that “greatest dynasty in the history of the NFL” thing working out for you and the rest of the Seahawk 2012’s?

  12. And to think the Browns had Shanahan and Mack on the team at the same time. My God were those dark days. No wonder they both left.

    AKA the one year dynasty

  14. The game is won and lost at the line of scrimmage. Frisco just improved their OL so it is better than what they had in 2019, the year they almost won the Super Bowl.
