The cap-strapped Steelers have found a way to pay receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster $8 million without paying him $8 million.

Per a source with knowledge of the deal, Smith-Schuster’s new contract has a signing bonus of $7 million and a base salary of $1 million. With four voidable years, the cap charge for the signing bonus becomes $1.4 million in 2021. Add in the base salary, and it’s a $2.4 million cap charge.

Others have reported that the cap charge is only $1.6 million. While the difference isn’t huge, $1.6 million isn’t accurate. And with the Steelers so tight against the cap, the extra $800,000 could end up making a huge difference.

The deal kicks $5.6 million in cap charges into 2022. The remaining years void five days after the 2021 Super Bowl.

Smith-Schuster could have earned $9 million with the Ravens. He took $1 million less to extend his career with the Steelers to a fifth season.

  1. This is outrageous! BB has more integrity in his little finger than these guys do!

  2. no way no how not possible juju was offered a single cent more by any other team. I’d have liked the steelers to move on from juju and work on that defensive backfield.

  3. lol!!

Rookies cost around 8 to sign. This team is on the onset of a rebuild as is most of the league. They are afraid to show it due to the gate money and the pandemic.

  4. why bother having a cap seems like there are a few hundred ways around it. Saints went from 70 million in the hole to even in 2 weeks.

  5. loyalty and for what.. chase the money.. the 1 yr deal was smart but the steelers are d.o.a.

  6. Now that’s a Home Town Discount..Although I’m sure this cap manipulation thing and voidable years ect wont be around too much longer..

  7. That’s a pretty damning commentary on Lamar Jackson’s ability as a passer. Juju would rather play with a great who is way past his prime, on an offence with no running game. That’s gotta hurt.

  8. This concept of play now pay later with adding void years to a player contract makes a mockery out of the salary cap. Teams get caught with too much dead money in future years. I guess teams think the cap is going to increase exponentially next year, if not they may regret it.

Has nothing to do with Lamar’s ability as a passer. The Chiefs offered JuJu 8 Million + 2.5 Million in incentives. Is that damning on Mahomes? When JuJu didn’t get the big dollars thrown at him, he chose to stay where he loves and is comfortable. Players have been doing that for decades.

  10. This deal by the Steelers has only one logical driver (considering their depth at WR) and that is Ben demanded him

  11. I began my evidently offensive comment by stating that “Democrats raise taxes”, which is a perfectly true statement. I then commented that rich people avoid them just like rich owners circumvent the Cap – another perfectly true statement. Don’t be like the Fake News Media and refuse to print my perfectly legitimate, uncontroversial comment. ProFootballTalk man up!
