Bills, Emmanuel Sanders match had been years in the making

USA TODAY Sports

The Bills knew they wanted Emmanuel Sanders. Sanders knew he wanted Buffalo.

With the Saints in the kind of cap crunch that caused them to cut Sanders loose, it was time for Sanders to land in Western New York.

“He’s a guy we’ve tracked for a couple of years. He’s been in winning locker rooms,” coach Sean McDermott said this week, via the Associated Press. “He’s had some big-time impressive numbers. Listen, you never want to lose your fastball.”

Sanders had been tracking the Bills, too.

“I used to sit on my off days on a Tuesday, I’d grab my iPad, and I would watch the Buffalo Bills, the coach’s film, and just the routes they were running,” Sanders said. “You’re seeing Josh [Allen] run around and rip the ball 60 yards down the field, it was just exciting to watch. It’s a reason why everybody is starting to talk about the Bills because they’re gaining traction.”

The Bills landed Sanders with a one-year, $6 million deal, most of which is guaranteed. He replaces John Brown on the depth chart, giving Buffalo a formidable group at the position — Stefon Diggs, Gabriel Davis, Cole Beasley, and Sanders.

Sanders, 34, has a trio of 1,000-yard seasons, all with the Broncos. The last came in 2016.

He won a Super Bowl in Denver to cap the 2015 season, and he nearly won a second with the 49ers in 2019. With the game on the line, Sanders got open deep. The throw, however, was off the mark.

With Josh Allen throwing the passes in Buffalo, that’s less likely to happen.

  1. Buffalo is becoming a destination. Players are actively choosing Buffalo in free agency, others are taking pay cuts to stay… what a time to be alive! I love it!

  2. Let’s not lose fact Bills offense got slowed down considerably in the playoffs. WR’s were not getting separation, especially during the AFCCG. With an improved running game & Sanders now in the fold hopefully they will take the next step.

  3. Emmanuel Sanders has produced everywhere he’s been. He’s reliable, stays healthy and is a great teammate. I guess it all comes down to money…if the Bills can land this guy,he would immediately contribute.

  4. Actually, Sanders stopped running. The throw was perfect. lol

Good thing Shanahan stopped running the ball against the sieve Chiefs D which was giving up 6ypc to both RBs.

Don’t hold your breath. He’s a one year rental deep threat at 34 whose production has been decreasing annually.

True about the separation – but every member of that receiving corps had an injury that game (Diggs oblique, Davis ankle, Brown knee and Beasley broken fibula).

Also, we saw the following week w/ a different officiating crew that the KC DB’s were a little TOO close to the receivers – they got flagged often. They didn’t in the Bills game, where the refs allowed for more contact.

But I agree – I think Sanders is a great addition, and I’d be surprised if the Bills didn’t take an RB early in the draft. The O will be better in 2021.

He can still play but never pay for the past. That’s a healthy contract for his age. Good for him.

  8. Sanders is a good fit with Buffalo. It should be fun watching Buffalo-New England games this year…..but only because I like watching Buffalo win.

  9. It will be interesting to see how Daboll uses Sanders. Sanders has the tools and experience to let Daboll get very creative. Not to mention Allen has the ability to put the ball anywhere he wants.

  10. funny how there are so many bills coming out of the wood work these days after what 25 years lol

  11. It’s really frustrating when your rival signs a guy for half the money as your number one guy to be their third receiver. Oh and he’s way more productive, just look at the numbers. I’m not sure why BB gave Agholar that kind of money.

  12. I would have take Aghooar in Buffalo for sure. I think he is a very overlooked talent. Great hands and is a professional. Hope Sanders is the same.
