Kendrick Bourne was one piece of the Patriots’ heavy activity in free agency last week, signing a three-year, $22 million deal.

Speaking to the New England media for the first time on Monday, Bourne said quarterback Cam Newton called to congratulate him on the deal.

“It was awesome. I told him I’ve been a fan of him for a long time,” Bourne said, via Doug Kyed of NESN. “I know he’s gonna have an awesome year. I’m just excited to play with him.”

Bourne noted that the Patriots’ quarterback situation did not play much of a factor in his decision to sign with the club. But he also seems satisfied with the current state of New England’s depth chart.

“I believe in Cam Newton,” Bourne said, via Mark Daniels of the Providence Journal. “He’s going to ball out.

Newton recently re-signed a one-year deal with the club after throwing for 2,657 yards with eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions, along with rushing for 592 yards with 12 TDs in 2020.

Bourne just finished his fourth season with the 49ers, originally signing with the team as an undrafted free agent out of Eastern Washington in 2017. He caught a career-high 49 passes for 667 yards in 2020. Overall, he’s made 137 receptions for 1,769 yards with 11 TDs in 58 games.

  1. You’ve heard of the Bourne Identity and the Bourne Supremacy. This is the Bourne Lunacy!

  2. We heard this all summer in 2020. We also heard that Stidham was going to be Brady 2.0. None of these statements were remotely correct. The Pats will be chasing QBs for 20 years until they luck into one by mistake again.

  3. Well, that can’t be. I was told by Patriots fans here that Cam Newton was going to be the backup.

  4. If you are only running 5 yard button hooks or end arounds then Cam is your man. But the facts are he is done being a NFL QB. Either you didn’t watch last year or your in concussion protocol. Mariota or a draft pick will be chucking the ball unless they want to go 7 and 9 again.

  5. LOL, I see a Newton led bunch of unmotivated, freshly financially in “now lay down and don’t get hurt ” free agents grinding to a 6-10 year…at best.

  6. Well; he may not be catching many balls if the other qbs outpetform Newton in preseason.

Newton’s arm and mechanics issues are not going away, nor his lack of understanding the offense.

  7. Cam is going to surprise a lot of people this year…and it will most likely be all those that still believe he is a starting QB.

  8. If Pats make playoff, it is Belichick’s greatness.

If Pats miss the playoff, it is Cam’s fault.

  9. I think many would agree that Cam did not have the year the Patriots had hoped he would and it would appear that Stidham is not the QB some Pats fans led us to believe. It will be interesting to see what the Patriots do in the draft. BB surprised many with his out-of-character free agent activity this year, could he also be planning another out-of-character play by moving up in the draft with an eye on a possible franchise QB?
