Quarterback Chase Daniel is signing a one-year deal with the Chargers, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Daniel’s deal has $1.5 million in guarantees remaining from his contract with the Lions.

He played for the Bears in 2018 when new Chargers head coach Brandon Staley was an assistant. Daniel spent four seasons with Chargers offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi as his quarterbacks coach in New Orleans.

Daniel, 34, will mentor rookie of the year Justin Herbert in an offense he knows well.

He spent last season with the Lions, playing four games.

In his career with five teams, Daniel has appeared in 69 games with five starts. He has 1,694 passing yards with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions.

  1. Man what a career. If I could have been an NFL player it would have been his…all jokes aside it shows how well regarded he is in the NFL and how valued he is by teams with young qbs

  2. Not sure Herbert needs mentoring.
The kid was phenomenal last year. Even I couldn’t of been more wrong.
I watched him at Oregon and I thought he was gonna be a bust. But the only bust I see is in the HOF if he keeps playing this good.

  3. Guy has earned over 30 million and completed a total of 178 career passes. That works out to over 165k per comp. Winning.

  4. Must be nice to hold a clipboard for almost your whole career and make SERIOUS money. Just like clipboard Jesus from the Chargers!

  5. Chase Daniel has had a stellar backup QB career…but Ryan Fitzpatrick begs to differ.

  6. His best work was with the Saints as Brees’ backup and sounding board. Drew Bees always had great things to say about Daniel I recall comments at the time along the lines of Daniel being a quasi-coach on the field.

  7. He’s proven to be a reliable backup and has even played well in the few games he’s started.

Herbert is a stud but it doesn’t hurt to have a guy who been in the league a dozen years (and who is content being a backup) be your sounding board.
