David Andrews: I wanted to come back to right the ship

Center David Andrews spent some time exploring offers from other teams as a free agent before ultimately settling on a return to the Patriots on a four-year deal.

Andrews is one of a handful of Patriot players to re-sign with the team and those players have memories of brighter days in New England than the 7-9 year they went through in 2020. In a video on the Patriots website, Andrews said that he’s back because he wants to put the team back on its former track and he believes their work in free agency will help that process.

“It’s definitely the start of turning this thing around,” Andrews said. “Part of the reason why I wanted to come back is to right this ship and get it to where we need to be going. It’s all kind of said and done if we don’t really put the work in and go back there and get this thing rolling, build on it and just become the best team we can be.”

The returning players and free agents will be joined by a slew of rookies next month and then the Patriots’ work to return to the playoffs can begin in earnest.

  1. Unless Tom Brady returns this year, think of that ship as the Titanic. Water was pouring in the day Tom left, and there is no fixing that…

  2. That ship has sailed. To Tampa. The Patriots are now equal to the Philadelphia Eagles as far as super bowl chances. Vegas has them at +3000 AFTER all those free agent signings

  3. That’s all good, but it will never happen with Cam lined up behind you… sigh

  4. The 2 top centers in free agency were Corey Linsley and David Andrews.
Linsley signed a 5 year $62.5 mil contract.
Andrews signed a 4 year $19 mil contract.

That seems like a true hometown discount.

  5. But Still no TB12.. billy might be able to coach up players to get back to playoffs but he won’t be able to make 1 second reads in the Field, make critical last second changes on the field and make accurate throws at crucial moments… so it won’t matter,The Greatest now resides in Tampa with another ring and Most likely another one to follow..Can’t Replace the GOAT!!

  6. Pandemic discombobulation and final stage of rebuild now over.

Many other afc teams destroyed in cap hells and refusing a proper rebuild.

    Path wide open.

  7. Just because the Pats were so good for so long, Pats fans think they are knowledgeable. This team isn’t going anywhere.

  8. The so-called experts wrote off the Patriots after a down COVID-19 season and a new QB in Cam Newton. Cam was not comfortable in a new system that was 100 times more complex than anything that he ran with the Panthers. There is no way I’m betting against a mad pissed-off Bill Belichick! There is no way on God’s green earth that Bill Belichick would have brought Cam Newton back for a second season if he didn’t have confidence that Cam could get the job done. Those who say that Jimmy Garoppolo would be an upgrade are just insane. For a QB who missed almost two seasons with injuries, Cam Newton didn’t play that bad with the talent that he had around him in Josh Daniel’s offense and his best WR Julian Edelman was hurt for most of the season.

  9. Cam’s 2nd year signing after demonstrating diminishing skills says one thing….no other QB available wants to go to the sinking ship.

    Let’s review:

In the last 2 years, BB has signed Adrian Phillips and Hunter Henry away from the Chargers in a cap hell, they overpay for a Center and Andrews stays when Andrews is actually better than Linsley. lol

And, PFF is calling the KC desperation overpay of Thuney one of the worst contracts ever. Thuney is great, albeit a bit older and due for injury, but it is a horrible contract because Veach has no leverage, fading away into a cap hell for the ages with no oline. Trent Williams also rejected them due to money.

To think that the media wants to proclaim Tom Telesco ot Brett Veach better GMs than BB is hysterical.

NE clearly will be a playoff team and we shall see who wins the qb job, and what they do in Rd1.

Should be a fierce competition in camp and the rebuild finalized off the back end of the 2nd dynasty.

  11. Cam may be one of the most motivated QB’s in the league. Do not underestimate the man. The Patriots’ dynasty has relied on players with chips on their shoulders.

  12. It was interesting to see the Patriots have the kind of offseason they have so far. For the 1st time in many years, they had to pay a little more to get many of their FA acquisitions, and they had to be one of the “splashy” teams.

For all its bluster & money spent, I’m still not inclined to think they improved that much. Clearly, they did at TE. The rest? More like minor upgrading, but nothing for other teams to fear.

I’d never rule BB out. He can coach any roster in the league to around .500. But it’s easy to envision this going the way of other “offseason winners,” too.

  13. If you people think that Cam is going to be the starter you’re all nuts…BB didn’t do what he did this off season to leave the QB position as is. I’ll bet the house he pulls a shocker in the draft and moves up to get a QB.

  14. LOL…..decade of dominance with Stidham? Gimme a break. They aren’t going anywhere with Cam and Stidham in spite of how much Kool-Aid you Patriots fans drink.

Pats were in cap hell last year. And you knew it. Every team has cap problems once in a while. Some more than others. You kept excuses high last year. The pandemic didn’t only hit Stidham, it hit everyone. Good luck and have an awesome day.

  16. Why do so many commenters assume that Cam will be the starting QB and that there won’t be any other QBs added to the team? BB has set things up so that he can move up and take a QB in the draft if there’s one he really wants. There could also still be a trade involving a QB acquisition. I think it’s a pretty safe bet there will be another QB on the roster one way or another, and there will be a QB competition this summer.

  17. There is no way I’m betting against a mad pissed-off Bill Belichick!

    ———————————————

Belichick is just another coach without Tom Brady.

Patriots are just another team without Tom Brady.

If a playoff spot was guaranteed by investing on some B+ receivers and TE, 20 of the 32 teams would have done the same.

True, I don’t think Cam is as bad as we saw last season, but you can bet that defense will be worse. So 2020 Patriots will be more like a team with average offense and average defense, and their fans pray that balls will bounce to the hands of players of right uniforms to make playoff.

  18. To those who claim that there are 8 reasons Belichick is the GOAT coach, read this :

    — Carl banks, round 1/pick 3 (1984)
    — Lawrence Taylor, round 1/pick 2 (1981)
    — Pepper Johnson Round: 2 / Pick: 51 (1986)
    — Leonard Marshall Round: 2 / Pick: 37 (1983)
1986 Top offense with a RB of 1500+ yards, (Joe Morris, 2nd round pick, 1982)

1991 NFCCG against 49ers, Giants offense played 39+ minutes
1991 SB against Bills, Giants offense played 40+ minutes.

Why do people think it was Belichick not Parcel?

Because right now he is the only option on the roster as a starter. Once the team makes another move at QB then that debate can begin.

Here’s a reason: Belichick has a defensive game plan in the Hall of Fame!

    ____

1986 Giants offense was ranked 8th. Running game was 5th. Defense was #2.

1990 Giants were the 14th ranked offense in the league. Defense was #1.

Do I think Parcells was a great coach, sure I do. I grew up in NY and he was king. But everyone knows BB had a hand in those wins, except for guys like you who think hes a hack.

You know Parcells also had Taylor, Banks, Pepper, and Marshall playing for him, but somehow you dont knock him for having those guys. How about Bill walsh? You knock him for having Montana, Rice, Roger Craig, John Taylor, Lott?

Or how about Noll with like 12 HOFers?

    Landry?

I know, how about Lombardi? You knock him for having Starr, Hornung, Taylor, Nitcshe, Gregg etc?

  22. Big fan of the Tuna, but people think it was Belichick and not Parcells for 4 reasons:

1.Parcells never won a SBowl without Belichick
    2.Parcells was 95-81 without BB
3.Parcells was 3-5 in the playoffs without BB
4.Who do you think coached those 4 great LBers?

  23. I don’t really get why BB’s defensive gameplan is in the HOF. He’s a great DC – but the Bills put up 19 points, and their TOP was half what the Giants had.

The Giants offense won that game by staying on the field so long. That 10 minute drive to start the 3rd beat the Bills – not the defensive gameplan.

  24. As a head coach, Belichick has made the playoffs once (in Cleveland) without Tom Brady at QB.

The Pats were 12-4 with Brady in 2019, 7-9 without him in 2020.

The Bucs were 11-5 with Brady in 2020, 7-9 without him in 2019.

We can hold off on the genius banter on BB until he wins consistently without Tom Brady.

  25. Here’s a reason: Belichick has a defensive game plan in the Hall of Fame!

Who do you think coached those 4 great LBers?

    —————————

With so much invested on defense, what was hard to build top offense, not build top defense. What part of it don’t you understand?

If offense stayed on fields for 40+ minutes, lot of defense would have done what Belichick’s defense did to Bills in SB, not mention that Belichick’s defense even allowed Bills having a chance to win the SB in last 2 minutes.

So explain to me what is special about his defense?

  26. The Giants offense being on the field so long was pivotal. What Belichick did so well was playing nickel and having his DBs rough up the WRs(just like the 1rst Pats/Rams SBowl). This was to slow down the no huddle K-Gun offense. BB dared Buffalo to run. He said if TThomas ran for 100 yrds, the Giants would win

  27. He said if TThomas ran for 100 yrds, the Giants would win

    ———————–

Ya, the famous “we will let Thomas run 100 yards”

Meaning, his defense was not able to shut down Bills defense, like Todd Bowles defense did to Chiefs offense.

If Giants offense had played only 31.5 minutes, like Bucs offense did, how many points would his defense have allowed?

Yep. And they didn’t even make the playoffs. And they were 16-0 the year before with Brady.

  30. Pats were 11-5 without Brady in 2008

    ————————–

    That is what Belichick said.

With Moss, won 19 out of 30 non-divisional teams.

    Good luck with that.

  31. Belichick’s genius with the Giants was having the best edge rusher in the history of the game.

How did that defense drop to 9th best in the league in 1988 and the Giants out of the playoffs with the genius Belichick that season? Did he coach poorly that year? Maybe he wasn’t as good of a DC as Vince Tobin was that year.

Vince Tobin was the guy who took over for Buddy Ryan as the Bears DC in 1986. Over the next 3 years, the Bears defenses were (in points, yards) 1986: 1, 1 1987: 4, 2 1988: 1, 2. What a defensive mastermind he was!

Yep, because of coaching and scheming the difference between the GOAT and a backup QB that hadn’t started a game at QB in 7 years was 5 games. And a team not making the playoffs with an 11-5 record was headline news at the time.
