Jimmy Garoppolo’s future likely won’t be in San Francisco

With the 49ers making a bold move up the 2021 draft board from No. 12 to No. 3, all signs point to coach Kyle Shanahan coveting one of the top quarterbacks — and being comfortable having two of them go before he picks.

If, as it appears, the 49ers gave up the 12th overall pick, two future first-round picks, and third-round pick for a quarterback, it means that Jimmy Garoppolo and his $25 million compensation package for 2021 will be gone.

Barring a steep pay cut and an understanding that he’s simply keeping the seat warm for the rookie, Garoppolo will be traded or released. Barring a steep pay cut to facilitate a trade, Garoppolo will be released.

We posed the question of whether Garoppolo eventually will be cut last month. We also explained that G.M. John Lynch said what he had to say when he said he has “no doubt” that Garoppolo will be the starter.

Look for the 49ers to try (unsuccessfully) to sell the idea that Garoppolo will remain in place, in order to build some trade leverage. Unless they can find a trade partner or get Jimmy to take less, Jimmy likely will be gone.

And then he’ll be free to sign with any other team. Like maybe the Patriots.

  1. He has been overrated from the time he was in NE. 49ers never should have paid him that much.

  2. There’s a scenario people are missing. The 49ers are super bowl contenders this year with G. And before you scoff at that let me remind you it’s a very similar roster to the one that went to the super bowl in 2019. 49ers can absolutely keep G for 2021 and take their shot at the superbowl and let the rookie learn. The alternative is ditching G and relying on the rookie from day one. Which, even for the best rookie QBs, is basically giving up on super bowl aspirations for 2021.

  3. So you’re saying that they will get rid of him and replace him with who? They aren’t going to start a rookie when they are a contender. After this year, yeah he will probably be gone. But for the 2021 season Jimmy G will be starting. If they were a rebuilding team then yeah they would start a rookie. They didn’t bring back all their vets just to let a rookie start. It’s exactly why you see rookies sit behind starters, like Aaron Rodgers did.

  4. The patriots seem to be the only logical destination for him. Belichick drafted him and was enamored with him, only to be overridden by Kraft and forced to keep Brady. Its a damn good thing too, the Patriots got a couple more SB rings after being “forced” to keep him, not to mention Brady getting ANOTHER one with the Bucs. Historically, Belichick has always had an uncanny knack for getting rid of players a year early rather than a year late, but he would’ve been dead wrong in this case. I know, hindsight is always 20/20!

They have Josh Rosen on the roster. They are not keeping Jimmy G with his current contract. And why would he even want to be there now?

  6. It was just a matter of time before this happened. We all knew that the 49ers were not satisfied with Garoppolo.no matter what Shanahan and Lynch were telling the media. If he winds up back in New England, so be it. At least he can throw the ball (until he probably gets hurt, again).

  7. That is the probably 1001st time people have said something like that since he won 5 games in a row at the end of the 2017 season, after the 49ers went 1-10 under Brian Hoyer and CJ Beathard. Hoyer and Beathard are gone, but jimmy G. is still inside a 49er uniform. If he starts losing, he will be gone too. Winning is not everything. it is the only thing. If he keeps winning, he may retire as a 49er. For now, getting rid of jimmy G. is a solution desperately looking for a problem.

  8. Can you imagine how much different this would be if he didn’t overthrown emmanuel sanders in the Superbowl?

  9. He has an arm….. that is more than we can say about Cam….

    He isn’t a leader like Cam is……

He is brittle…. where Cam is strong….

Trade for him with a 3rd round compensatory pick…. that will work out

  10. Good takes as far as not letting a rookie start. Not only is Aaron Rodgers a prime example, they also saw the benefit of it with Patrick Mahomes learning from (ironically) Alex Smith for a year before taking the reigns. Maybe we might see this become a trend once again. Build a team first then win with a young QB before selling the farm to pay him a new deal.

  11. I believe Herbert or Wilson will be the guy of the future. JG is the present, for at least two more years if SF makes a deep playoff run this year with him

Whichever QB they select in the draft will ride the pine, watch, learn, and be ready if JG either gets hurt or starts losing games. At that point they will have their trial by fire.

If the rook proves he is NFL ready, JG will be released prior to next season, which is the last year of his contract. Pretty simple really

  12. The Niners are sitting pretty right now.

They will draft a QB at #3, who will be able to sit behind Garoppolo and learn the offense. Then, if/when Garoppolo plays poorly, or gets injured, the new guy gets his chance.

The NFC West is going to be very competitive.

  13. The 49ers have a Super Bowl-contending roster, made all the more powerful with the acquisition of Trent Williams. So, do you hand the keys to this Bentley over to a rookie, particularly one from Brigham Young or one from North Dakota State who played one game last year against, uh, who was it, Bemidji State? I wouldn’t. I think Garoppolo stays for one more year. Way too much of a gamble to rely on a rookie.

  14. Meanwhile in Santa Clara… rebuild #5 in the last 10 years. What a dumpster fire.

  15. If I was a Patriots fan, I’d be pretty excited about this.

Jimmy G. has had bad luck w/ injuries. But sometimes players are injury prone until they’re not. If he’s healthy, he’s a big upgrade over Cam, imo.

I doubt the Pats have to trade much for him, either.

  16. Meanwhile, in Seattle, the Seahawks haven’t sniffed a Superbowl since 2015, while the Forty Niners were there in 2020.

    Seattle…..what a dumpster fire.

  17. As an unabashed BB fan boy, my instincts tell me they envision Jimmy and Cam running an offense like Brees and Hill.

BB always talks about attacking inside out and having players that can shift all over the field. If nothing else, it would be fun watch a fundamental change to the game where 2 Qb’s could be on the field at the same time. nevermind the threat of Myers or Edelman throwing the ball.

Just happy to have something to get excited about after that rough finish to last year.

  18. The Patriots are more than likely reaching out to Atlanta to orchestrate a trade. They want a young quarterback who they can mold, so they’re going to need to get to about pick 4 to do that.

  19. whineconniseur says:

Jimmy has a no trade clause

Jimmy also has no leverage. He can take a trade/restructure or he can get cut and restructure via free agency.

  20. Falcons at #4 are now in “what now” mode, probably have to take their 2nd choice at qb. Shanahan gave away our SB win back in 2017 and now he’s cut on line for our next QB.

  21. “Just happy to have something to get excited about after that rough finish to last year.”

Must be tough for you guys. Try 20+ years of rough finishes.

  22. You honestly think this Superbowl-calibre team will roll with a rookie? I doubt it.

  23. Still a long time before the draft. Way to0 early to guess what Belichick will do. He is in no rush. Heck, I thought Davis Mills had as good a pro day as any of the top QB’s.

  24. His status depends on which rookie they get: if they get fields, they go with Jimmy. If they get Wilson, they release Jimmy.

  25. The cynic in me says that if the niners draft a QB and Jimmy G knows hes out after 1 year, he either pushes for a trade or “finds a way” to get injured this year so he becomes a free agent next year.

I am definitely scoffing not because I think you are wrong on the roster, but because to think they got there because of him is funny. Yeah I know their record is better blah blah. Often happens with a semi-consistent starter in place. Niners got there with Kaep too but few people question whether he got them there either.

Game managers, not the guy who gets you to glory.

  27. I’m curious what Kyle as the Super Duper Quarterback Guru has done or can do with former 1st round pick Josh Rosen. He was hardly given a chance with the offensive lines and perhaps coaching in his previous stops. does his talent justify his his draft slot? what can he do with this team? he might be the sleeper in all this and come out the starter until the rookie is ready to go. Jimmy Glass is gone

  28. More likely they keep JG and let the rookie QB learn the offense before putting him on the field. Follow the Chiefs plan with Alex Smith and Mahomes.

  29. Just like Kaepernick, once defenses know how to scheme against Jimmy G he becomes a mediocre QB. Make Jimmy G try to beat you…and he can’t. He lacks the x-factor….

  30. Green Bay cut Boyle so they’re in the market for another backup…… unless they plan on drafting another in the first round?!?!?!

  31. Next years number 2 or this years. New england is nothing with Cam as the QB. New England usually screws up second round picks anyway. Jimmy backed up by Stidham and you can turn your 1 into a 2 and early three. Take a playmaker on offense like Elijah Moore and away you go.

  32. That’s what happens when you waste a 2nd round pic for a backup 2nd round QB and then sign him to a mega deal prior to his ever starting a full season when you could have tagged him to see what you actually had. Waste all the way around…now the window of elite D has closed….no SB wins moving forward as long as Jed holds ownership. Eddy D would have has another five titles by now.

It’s cute you think Jimmy has no leverage. If He is cut he will be by far the best QB on the free agent market and despite everything he is a quality QB who is injury prone. Will a team desperate for a quality starter shell out big bucks for a quality QB they don’t have to give up draft picks to obtain? Sure thing. NE may pounce on hime in free agency. WFT may jump on him. Carolina may bid. New Orleans might see something they like. Chicago, Jags, Jets, Broncos. All may view Jimmy as a significant enough upgrade to pay him at least what he was due this season. A two or three year deal that pays $75-80 million is not that crazy for the best free agent QB available if the team feels he’s a quality starting QB.

  34. Quarterback Bliss
My friends John and Kyle have orchestrated maybe not bliss, yet, but possible quarterback ecstasy. We have three options for salvation which is three more than many teams ever have. We have a proven winner but fragile who has pledged to devote the off-season to becoming less glass, and maybe so, and he can perhaps dominate for years. They have virtually for free a former first round pick just burning for redemption who is deadly accurate like Kyle desires. Then you draft an outstanding prospect for the future, and like Garappolo himself maybe will have to wait in the wings as few years if Jimmy does it right.

  35. What happens to all the Cam love if Jimmy G goes back to the Patriots? Will Newton be content if Garapolo gets signed and becomes the starter?

  36. Well, he can just forget about Chicago! Pace & Nagy have already named the great Andy Dalton, their starter, so…… 🤷🏼‍♀️

  37. I think the 49ers are going to surprise a lot of people. This draft reminds me of the John Elway draft. There was Elway, Marino, Jim Kelly, Tony Eason, Todd Blackledge, O’Brien, and a couple others. All the QB’s don’t necessarily get drafted in the correct order. Trevor Lawrence is probably the equivalent of Elway. Likely a first ballot HOFer. But Marino ended up being the 6th QB drafted. Mike Shanahan (Kyle’s father) has been around a long time. He’s seen every QB, and he’s coached quite a few. He was the one who took Elway from great QB to a first ballot HOFer, and super bowl winner. He did the same thing with Steve Young. I’m sure Mike is studying all the QB’s, and so is Kyle. I have no doubt those guys are pretty confident in their ability to evaluate prospects, regardless of how the rest of the league has them rated. The Shanahan’s have also witnessed the inability of the herd to get these QB’s right, so they’ll pay zero attention to what anyone else thinks. I mean, if they think someone like Kyle Trask from Florida is the second best QB, they won’t hesitate and risk someone else picking him. What if Andy Reid had hesitated on Mahomes? Andy probably had Mahomes rated as the top QB, and like the Shanahan’s, wasn’t at all interested in what the herd thought. People will say you don’t have to take Trask at #3, he’ll be there later. But maybe someone else likes Trask just as much, and drafts him while you hesitated? What if Trask has a career like Jim Kelly, leading his team to 4 super bowls? Then, #3 sounds like a bargain. Trust me on this one. The Shanahan’s aren’t going to be following the herd when it comes to QB’s. So don’t be shocked if you hear a name called that catches you off guard.

  38. SF will start Rosen, who is being brought along properly and deserves a shot to show what he can do. They will draft the guy they identified as best fit for the system there. They will release Garopollo, which is the most sensible way to move on from him. NE and one other team will push hard to sign Jimmy, but NE will prevail.

Meanwhile, more trades have to be in the offing. CAROLINA is likely to put some deal together to move up, and a few others are itching to make maneuvers to appease ticket holders who are wondering why their franchises are sitting still too long. Always pressure from outside as well as above (ownership) to make a splash… should be a wild month ahead.

  39. He’s a Chicago boy so if he doesn’t go back to New England, I hope he plays for the Bears one day!

    =======

To be fair to Kaepernick on that Super Bowl, they were 5 yards from being champions with 3 chances to punch it in but Jim Harbaugh called for 3 passing plays that lost the game. He could have Kaepernick or Gore run 3 times and they would more likely be called champs.

  41. He will be the starter for the Patriots this upcoming season. It just sets up this way. Belichick and JimmyG have this personal connection and Belichick is the right coach to figure out how to keep him healthy and maximize his ability.

With Garopollo and the additions the Pats have brought in, they’ll be very competitive once against
