Ravens announce Sammy Watkins deal, “pending physical”

It’s official. With an asterisk.

The Ravens have announced that they have signed receiver Sammy Watkins to a one-year deal, “pending a physical.”

The physical is always part of the process. For 99 percent of the players, it’s not an issue. For players with injury histories, it can be.

That doesn’t mean the Ravens are anticipating any problems. They used the same term when they signed guard Kevin Zeitler earlier this month.

With Watkins, it’s definitely a point to consider.

If he passes the physical and if he stays healthy in 2021, he brings a great complement to Hollywood Brown at receiver. Both have the speed to stretch a defense, and defenses that become too obsessed with stopping the run now risk seeing either or both run right by the coverage.

But first, the physical.

  1. Was it the foot injuries that have caused him the problems? I remember coming out of college he was supposed to be the next big thing

  2. LMAO. One of the worst starting receivers in the league is not a “great complement” to anything. He hasn’t even been average for years, with the best QB in the league.

  3. Better do a psych evaluation while they’re at it. That guy is a Looney Toon.

  4. Not a trouble maker, never quite lived up to the hype, but has had a good, lucrative career. Not to mention one of the weirdest dudes in the entire NFL.

  5. Watkins is vastly over rated. He’s not a great route runner, has issues with drops, and has a lengthy injury history.

He’s always relied on his speed which he’s losing

  6. Dislocated a finger & sprained his wrist picking up the pen to sign the contract.

  7. Good dude. Never quite lived up to the Bills trading up to #4 to get him.

If he could only stay healthy, he might. That’s a big If, though.

  8. His agent better keep him in bubble wrap before the physical if he wants him to pass.

  9. Sadly he is the third best pass catcher in Baltimore. Thats how depleted the receiving team is in Baltimore. Andrews , Brown and Watkins . He will open up things when playing healthy , he will make great plays but will also frustrate the fans with his health and drops

  10. No one cares if they run past the coverage. Got no one to get them the ball.

  11. Watkins has a unique combination of speed, power and getting paid for not playing. He’s not as good at that as Chase Daniels, but he’s definitely one of the best in the league. He did provide great memories and we’ll always be grateful for that.

  12. Lamar is going to have another MPV season and the Ravens are going to go on a Super Bowl run!

  13. Sammy Watkins has all the talent of a pro bowl WR. I’m not big on cliches, but there is one that I love, and it applies to Sammy. “The best ability is availability”. If this guy stayed healthy, he’d still be in Buffalo, and he’d be a fan favorite and very wealthy.

  14. When healthy it took a top NFL qbs arm to make him look average. He no longer has that qb arm throwing to him. Plus the guy is a little strange along with being hurt often. What the Ravens need is a really good blocking receiver for the 70 percent run to pass ratio by Jackson.

Sammy is one of the best route runners in the league. Plays x receiver which is reliant on strength, quickness and ability to run routes. He is injury prone. Besides that, he is a prototypical X receiver. If you said he lost his explosiveness, I get it. Speed, not really an x receiver thing.

  16. I seriously doubt the Ravens consider Watkins the “answer” at WR. He is roster depth, veteran presence, and 3rd option at best.
