Alvin Kamara isn’t a fan of the inevitable 17-game season

Count Saints running back Alvin Kamara among those not in favor of 17 games.

Sh-t dumb . . . as hell,” Kamara said on Twitter in response to the non-news news that owners will expand the regular season by one game this week.

The players voted last year on a labor deal that gave the league the ability to add one regular-season game. The players will share in the extra revenues, but that doesn’t make them enthusiastic about playing one more game every year that counts.

Indeed, plenty of players voted against the new CBA. It passed by a surprisingly thin margin, despite the strong endorsement of the labor deal from union leadership.

For years, players complained about Thursday football. Those complaints have subsided. Similarly, complaints about 17 games will emerge and persist — and eventually subside.

Then, the season will expand to 18 games.

  1. I don’t like 17 games, I am concerned about the players’ health.

That 17th game is just for money.

  2. The 17 game regular season is an abomination that disrespects the history and traditions of the game – and the health of the players. It only passed because the vote took place amid the chaos of the onset of the pandemic. I firmly believe that had the vote been held in normal circumstances the players would have had a proper debate about it and the proposal would have been rejected.

  3. In 2040, they’ll be voting to expand the regular season to 24 games. It’s always about the money.

  4. Teams will have to rotate more, it will be the only way to moderate injuries. Yeah, you’ll get more NFL but you’re favorite players be rotated out more during the game, ’21 NFL – a watered down product. I would even go so far as to say that players may even have their own personal bye weeks. It’s too rough of a game to play for 17 weeks let alone 18! Get ready for load management NFL style. I prefer things as they are but there is never enough for the greedy.

  5. Any regular season game that added and pre-season game subtracted im all for

  6. The 17 game season is just a money grab by the owners. Players never should have agreed to it. It’s not just the concussions, it’s all the other injuries.

  7. They will play 17 games to eliminate 18 teams, leaving 14 for the playoffs. Seems like it makes sense to start following the NFL season around week 7 or 8.

  8. Can’t blame Alvin a bit. Running backs take a beating. To extend the season another game could put the man’s career in jeopardy. As it is, teams are often decimated by the end of the season.

  9. The one thing that I have never seen from people who oppose the 17th game based on player health is any statistical evidence that it the problem that is being claimed. We have over 40 years of data in which some player have played 16 games and others 17 games or more. Whenever the NFL expands the playoffs from 10 to 12 and then to 14 teams, it seems like the focus of the debate is whether or not the quality of the playoffs will be watered down and not the health implications of subjecting another 100 players to the rigors of a 17th game.

  10. NFL QB’s love this, they don’t get hit anymore so they can add 2 more games for all they care.
QB’s will use the extra games to pad their stats some more so they will get overpaid even more than they already are. NFL QB’s are greedy.

  11. Teams need to add their own “bye week” that affects playoffs the least where backups play. Since the owners won’t add a 2nd bye the teams must protect the players & give them rest between weeks 8-12. If a late bye is scheduled then team’s bye should be in weeks 4-7.

    —————
    It’s only a matter of time … 12 game season in ’60, 14 in ’61, 16 in ’78, now 17.

  13. The ultimate goal is to make it an 18 game season with two preseason games. It’s just around the corner.

  14. i wonder how many people are thrilled with their work environment and hours????? Maybe he could get a job picking strawberries or roofing houses. I am sure it is difficult being hit by large men all the time but he chose the profession – he wasn’t forced to make millions of dollars and get whatever he wants because he can run the ball.

  15. They should expand rosters to 57 and make everyone active on game day. It doesn’t cost the owners anything only spreads the cap around. More substitutions and packages, less damage to players over 17 or 18 games.

  16. Poor athletes have to work an extra week and get more in that one paycheck than most earn in their life time. That’s a darn shame he has to work 4 months out of the year instead of 12 like everyone else. Should we start a fund to help with the crying?

  17. Some of you are actually worried about the “health” of a professional athlete because of working one extra week? How about the health of the policeman or firefighter or serviceman who work for $50K per year and risk their “health” every day? C’mon people.

  18. He is right in a sense. If you go to 17 games in the regular season but take away a game in the preseason the only thing that the NFL gains is $$$$.

The preseason is where new players evaluated. How can truly evaluated players in 2 games. It is totally impossible.

It’s all about the $$$$. Like the NFL and the owners are really hurting financially. Most are billionaires, so they are not hurting.

  19. Hopefully with the longer season, all of sissy cheater bradys records are broken. That’s the only positive about it

  20. It’s easy to tell someone to suck it up and work more when it’s not you being told to suck it up.
People also seem to think that getting an extra paycheck somehow makes taking a helmet to your kneecaps easier.
People watching football literally have no skin in the game. I think the guys who go on the field know how much the trolll is on their bodies.

Also let’s take into account the greater disparity there’s going to be now between college & the pros. College guys already hit that “wall” after about game 12 in the NFL. They’re really going to be feeling it by the time thei season ends.

  21. 17 regular season games, 7 teams in the playoffs and only 1 bye to be won. The regular season will still matter but not every game will matter and I bet we will see Spurs style load management where good teams sandbag against great teams to rest up and save their energy for the teams threatening their playoff position. I dont like it

  22. If you don’t like 17, you are REALLY going to be upset when they go to 18! People will start complaining about balancing the schedule, adding byes, pushing the super bowl to presidents day weekend, and bam! 18.

  23. The preseason is where new players evaluated. How can truly evaluated players in 2 games. It is totally impossible.
    —————————
Teams don’t evaluate players based on the pre-season. Otherwise, all this pre-season superstars would make the roster. They rarely do. Pre-season is about 10% of their evaluation.

  24. This is a player health issue. The season should be shortened to 2 games. If you win both you’re co-champion. This would make for more party and leisure time. Which is all they seem to want. Oh, and money … lots of money.

  25. This reminds me of when the mule fell off the cliff in Triple Frontier.

They got too greedy and who suffered. The donkey… that’s who.

Yeah Ben Afflecks character got killed too but he negotiated a 17 game season. The donkey didn’t negotiate anything. He just fell off a cliff and the money scattered all over the jungle.

    All for the almighty dollar

  26. It was negotiated into the new CBA. The players approved this and likely received some concessions for this. If he doesn’t like it I’m sure he can find a real job making the same amount of money he does now…..ok, maybe not.

  27. i just dont see a 17th game being that red line / straw that broke the camels back. Are the players bodies suddenly going to fall apart during the 17th game?!? I think they will be okay.

  28. Have your complaints about player safety. But the arguments about messing with the history of the game clearly lack knowledge of the games history. The history of the NFL is one of an evolving game. Their wasn’t always 16 game seasons, the football wasn’t always a sleak missile perfect for throwing, as it is now, blockers couldn’t extend their arms or use open palms, DBs could contact receivers more than 5 yards off the line. Those are but a few among countless other major changes to the NFL throughout it’s entire history.

  29. I bet almost everyone who posts on social media has never played a minute of pro. sports. The stupidity of saying let them become a roofer, or anything else is just ignorant. Let them get a nine to five job. Let them go into the work force like all of us do. How about you spend years trying to do what they do. Years of working on your body and craft to only find out your are just a little short. The commitment a pro. athlete makes is beyond anything we as fans know. Not counting the physical toll.

Run into a wall at full speed a few dozen times every Sunday and tell me how you feel on Monday. Or jump out of a car doing 30 miles an hour in shorts and a t-shirt and tell me cyclists are soft.

  30. I don’t like the 17 game season idea and neither do 49% of the NFLPA’s voting members.

  31. If Trump was still in office, he’d be blamed for this. Who will Kamara blame it on now?

  32. chefboyd says: But won’t say no to the extra game cheque…

Where have you read that the Owners are planning to pro-rate the players salaries up to give them an extra game check?

  33. All these players need to do is to ask for 8 people addition to roster per extra game. Then they can rotated and more players will get money.

  36. i dont really care what alvins opinion is…eventually he will not be in the nfl and what thinks will mean even less…

  37. With 17 games, there should be an extra bye week and starters should be pulled when the game is out of reach. Demaurice Smith used to play a good game, but now he’s a total yes man. In other news, heard he just bought a 2nd house in Wyoming and put in a new pool.

  38. redlikethepig says: “This is a player health issue.”

Just stop with virtue signalling like you really care about “player health”.

Just like every fan here, you’ll move on and cheer for the next player up.

  39. So he has a problem with more game checks? If you go to the playoffs there is even more games. He gonna complain about that as well? He just mad cuz his stats are gonna tank with out Brees.

But won’t say no to the extra game cheque…
    ———————————-

They can’t say no to something they aren’t getting. Their annual salary just gets divided by 17 instead of 16. Do you really think the owners are going to add an extra game check to contracts when there is no language that requires them to? Really man? If all the players were getting an extra game check that labor agreement wouldn’t have barely passed. 49% of players voted against a 17th game.

  41. These comment section for this article is a great example of why most commenters here are seen as a laughingstock. Such facile, thoughtless takes.

“Hurr durr, shut up and play.”

“Hurr durr, preseason bad, regular season good.”

“Hurr durr, more games = better.”

  42. If some of the players are angry, they need to vent their anger at D. Smith. He is a pathetic union leader and reason why the NFLPA is the worst union in sports.

Welcome to our group known as laughingstocks.

  44. It makes absolutely no sense to have a taxi-squad for each game. All 53 players should be able to dress and potentially play in every game … and now that a 17th game is on the schedule – it’s time to address that.

  45. Players like Kamara just don’t get the big picture. Without additional games, the salary cap com only grow so much. I’m sure he won’t be upset when he sees the salary cap go close to $300 in the next 3-5 years.

  46. If they’re gonna be playing 17 and 18 game seasons, playoff success will be dictated by health as much as roster skill – not sure that’s the best way to determine the NFL’s best team.

  47. All players are well paid compared to Joe/Jenny lunchbox.
What’s he got to complain about?

I could of and it still would of gone over your head. Oh, less than a 100

  49. Can’t wait to see people raving about all the records being crushed {rolls eyes}

  50. They should play 17 games where each player has to sit out one game and only play 16 games. The franchises would need to strategically figure what game to sit a player.

  51. Who cares? Why would any fan care about an extra half hour of football being played by a player? The regular season is 16 hours over 4 months. Players generally play half an hour of football on game day. Why make a big deal out of it? It’s not like the extra game is going to save the nfl from ending up like nascar.

  52. darcrequiem says: “They can’t say no to something they aren’t getting. Their annual salary just gets divided by 17 instead of 16.”
    ——————

Players get 48% of ALL league revenue. If the 17th game brings the average $900m per NFL week, then the NFLPA gets an extra $432m to share between players. And the NFL lost $4 BILLION in revenue due to COVID, yet none of 2020 players took any loss, instead deferring that to future players signing new contracts.

Regardless, players are paid per SEASON. Kamara will get his full $15 million whether he plays 650 snaps over 16 games or only 100 snaps over 17 games.

  53. No player or fan should be happy with a 17 game schedule. What it means for the players is more chances for injuries.
What it means for fans is the likelihood of seeing more back up players playing.
It’s all about greed. When is enough enough for the NFL owners?

  54. I’m not a fan of the 17 game season either, just comes across as pure utter corporate greed!!!! Guys already have a problem physically getting through a full 16 game season. It’s already hard to not only win your division but win in the playoffs after a 16 game season, adding one more game is only going to make both winning in the playoffs and winning your division harder unnecessarily… all so 32 dudes can make more money?? And in the process they’re willing to risk the health of their players even further to do so……

  55. The players have a right to complain about working one extra day once a year but plenty of hard working Americans who buy tickets experience forced overtime for the good of the company much more than than that.they ask for outrageous contracts yet complain when the men who sign the checks ask for one more day of work of which they are well compensated for.they can always quit and find a real job if they are unhappy.

  56. Not much discussion on how this will impact stats and the record book. Will we prorate rankings based on # of games played? Who will be first QB to throw for 60 or 70 tuddies in a season?

  57. Will their yearly pay increase then? If they’re playing one more game they should get one more game check of equal value

    ////////
Oh, please. Every game is about the money. It always has been. You should save your concern for those that have to work 2-3 jobs in America just to support their family. I am not concerned for a single second about the NFL adding another game, that all parties agreed to.

  59. So much anger for an innocuous Twitter comment that Im sure every RB agrees with. The keyboard warriors never fail to entertain.

  60. “redlikethepig says: “This is a player health issue.”

I was being sarcastic. Sorry for the confusion.

  61. No Alvin, what will be dumb as hell is when defenders load 8 in the box coz your defenses have zero respect for your QB’s

  62. That’s right everyone – pro athletes are just cattle to the slaughter for our entertainment. Why should we care about their health?

  63. It’s the same number of games. Just one less pre-season game.

Random: Miraculously, some records still stand from the NFL’s 12-game seasons. Like Dick ‘Night Train’ Lane’s 14 interceptions in a single season record…Which he set as a rookie.
