Matt Breida won’t “go around pouting and complaining about carries”

Running back Matt Breida had at least 126 touches during his first three seasons in the NFL, but a trade sending him to the 49ers to the Dolphins last year was followed by a big drop is usage.

Breida had 68 touches in Miami and he didn’t find a landing spot in free agency that promises a bigger role. Breida signed with the Bills and projects to be the third back behind Devin Singletary and Zack Moss on a team that had little use for a third back last season.

Signing Breida could signal a change in plans, but Breida said Monday that he’s not one to “go around pouting and complaining about carries.” He learned while playing with backs like Tevin Coleman, Raheem Mostert, and Jeff Wilson with the 49ers that opportunities don’t always come as expected.

“You never know when it’s going to be your turn,” Breida said, via Jay Skurski of the Buffalo News. “Guys do go down. It’s the unfortunate nature of our business, so I feel like you’ve got to be ready in all aspects. We’re only going to be as good as our weakest link, so you want everyone on the team to be on the same level. . . . Just be humble and don’t be selfish and everything else will work itself out.”

In Breida’s last two seasons, he’s helped the Dolphins to their first winning record since 2016 and the 49ers to a Super Bowl bid. The Bills wouldn’t mind seeing his arrival help them mimic the NFC West team’s success.

  1. Not sure why Breida was under utilized by the Dolphins. He was a great change of pace back for the 49ers. This was a smart pickup by the Bills.

  2. Hopefully the Bills will find a way to get Breida onto the field. He is one of those rare guys who is a threat to take it to the house every time he touches the ball. His carry on the 49ers first play from scrimmage in their game against the Browns in 2019 that went for 80+ yds and a TD is the most electrifying play I’ve seen live in decades of going to NFL games. Give this guy a crease and he’s gone.

  3. Without any major additions to the RB roster via the Draft, I would not be surprised with Brieda getting an equal amount of snaps with Singletary and Moss.

  4. Actually, there’s a lot of talk that the Bills will either go with a 3-man rotation or bench either Singletary or Moss. Breida adds a speed element that neither of the other two possess.

  5. I hope he packed something delicious because BB is gonna eat this guy’s lunch!

  6. He needs the opportunity to get carries. Singletary and Mose were a below average combo last year.

  7. Singletary left a lot to be desired last year. He could not be counted on when the Bills needed to run. I think Breida was brought in as insurance, and to push Singletary.

Ran for 108 yards on 17 carries against BB last year. Amazing that BB can’t contain a third stringer.
