Xavier Woods eager to play with Harrison Smith, Patrick Peterson

New Vikings safety Xavier Woods said one of the biggest reasons he chose to sign in Minnesota was the players he be paired with in the team’s secondary.

Via Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Woods said that playing with Harrison Smith and Patrick Peterson was a big draw for him. Woods said he took time to study Harrison’s play before his former team, the Dallas Cowboys, prepared to face the Vikings last season.

“Just as much as I was preparing for Minnesota’s offense, I was watching Harrison,” Woods said. “That was one of the main reasons why I wanted to be here, to be able to learn from him, be able to play (with him). And not only Harrison, but (Patrick Peterson).”

Woods has started 44 games for the Cowboys over the last three seasons before making his way to Minnesota. He reached a deal with the Vikings over the week before signing officially on Monday. Woods had a career-high 77 tackles in 2019 and has five career interceptions during his four seasons with the Cowboys.

In addition to playing with Smith and Peterson, Woods is reuniting with defensive backs coach Karl Scott, who coached Woods in college at Louisiana Tech

“The Vikings wanted me,” Woods said, “I talked to (head coach Mike Zimmer) and he told me that I had an opportunity to come and play. That’s all I can ask for.”

Woods would presumably slot into the role at free safety vacated by the departure of Anthony Harris to the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason.

  1. Not only does Woods get to play alongside Smith & Peterson, his season will be done after 17 games. So there’s that.

  2. Man am I glad Arizona”s offense and Pro Bowl QB Kyler Murray gets to go against that washed secondary next season. DeAndre Hopkins, AJ Green, Christian Kirk and Andy Isabella will run circles around Patrick Peterson and the rest of MN”s washed up DB Room sponsored by AARP. Xavier Woods isn’t as bad at his position as Peterson is at his but he’s really close to it. The only DB with any really talent left in the tank in that secondary is Harrison Smith, and Father Time is coming for him to, the clock is ticking. On the other side of the ball as in athletic as Cousins is behind a bad OL AZs elite pass rush should have zero problem ruining Cousins day and staying in his face all day long.
This game should be easy money for Kyler Murray and company, really easy money. Patrick Peterson said he wanted to play for a winner and then leaves an actual contender to sign a 1YR/$8M deal with the plateaued Vikings…. You can tell he definitely did go to LSU on an Academic scholarship. Secondly if AZ was willingly to let Peterson walk over $8M dollars it shows how just how little they think of Peterson as a player at this point in his career. AZ was able to land a CB who’s much better than Peterson is at this point in their respective careers in 6ft/200pd CB Malcolm Butler on a 1/$6M deal with only $3.25M guaranteed & who had a PFF Grade of 75 last season compared to Peterson’s 54, I’ll take Butler any day of the week at that price over Pat P.

  3. Well it certainly can’t get much worse than that collection of garbage they trotted out last year.
That’s the beauty of a complete rebuild, there’s nowhere to go but up.

  4. Great moves by the magician, Mike Lynn. He’ll have us back in the super bowl like after the Herschel Walker trade.

  5. I didnt realize the Cardinals were such a dominate team in the playoffs last year, must have missed that.

    Man am I glad

Well, somebody sure is bitter that Patrick Peterson didn’t resign with his team. Even the goofball Packer fans don’t go on a rant this long against the Vikings.

I cannot argue that the defense was garbage last year. But, to call it a complete rebuild is to ignore the fact that Hunter and Pierce didn’t play, Barr was out for 14 games, and even Kendricks missed the last 5 games. The Vikings are filling areas where they lost a few guys, and improving where they were weak. You know, like 31 other teams.

  8. Man, it must be a really sad and depressing life to be a packer fan to have to stalk the Vikings.

  9. Oh yeah, that’s right.
I almost forgot that the Vikings are the only team that has to deal with injuries throughout a long and grueling NFL season.
Thanks for catching me up to speed. Again. 🙄

    Dude, you are clueless.

  11. Zimmer will be back to his normal top 10 defense with this crew. Crazy how quickly people forget how dominant his defenses have been in MN.

Remove the four best players from any teams front seven and they are going to suffer. How do you think GB would perform without P Smith, Z Smith, Clark, and…. and…… huh. I don’t even know who the fourth best would be. They’re all kind of replaceable after those three aren’t they? Well, you get the idea

Yes but that garbage beat the Packers in Green Bay. So now we all can wonder which garbage was worse?

C’mon, Man, you can’t be serious?
Yes, the Vikings beat the Packers in their 2nd meeting, congratulations.
But they’d eventually trail them by 6 games overall by season’s end.
    6 games!
    Do you honestly still wonder???

And as for, BadCheeseheadTroll, every single NFL team endures injuries.
Did you see what the Niners went through?
The Packers suffered their share too, and that included a future Hall of Fame LT just prior to the postseason.
Do you think he might’ve been useful against the Buccaneers in the NFC Championship game?
You just can’t sit around and make excuses.
Good teams, deep teams, overcome these things.
Green Bay put 16 players on IR on their way to a Super Bowl win in 2010.

I will say this: that if the Viking fan base isn’t complaining about officiating after just about any loss their team suffers, they’re whining about injuries or just about any other excuse they can come up with for 60 years of lackluster, fruitless football.

I don’t often talk bad about other teams and their fans and I would never call a team garbage if they beat my team. And if that team that beat my team finished 7-9 and missed the playoffs it makes it worse not better. It’s just funny that you call a team garbage but they beat your team.
