Ryan Pace talks up Andy Dalton

Bears General Manager Ryan Pace is standing strongly behind his recently signed quarterback Andy Dalton, saying Dalton is definitely Chicago’s starter and has all the credentials the Bears need.

“Obviously, his experience,” Pace said in extolling Dalton’s virtues, via Andrew Siciliano of NFL Network. “He’s a nine-year starter. He’s been to three Pro Bowls.”

It’s true that Dalton has been to three Pro Bowls, but Pro Bowls aren’t necessarily a great indication of a player’s quality, and Dalton is years past his last Pro Bowl. In fact, Mitchell Trubisky, the quarterback the Bears are moving on from, has been to a Pro Bowl more recently than Dalton has.

But Pace insists that Dalton is the man to improve the Bears after back-to-back 8-8 seasons.

“He’s one of the more complete quarterbacks that we evaluated this year in free agency and we’re excited to have him,” Pace said. “We feel like we’ve gotten better with Andy.”

If the Bears don’t get better with Andy, it will probably be another G.M. who chooses their next starting quarterback.

  1. He is an improvement but not the answer. Pace is one of my favorite GMs. Love having him in the NFC North as my competition.

  2. Liar liar pants on fire…see we have resorted to childish sayings for adults in diapers running the Bears.
Please stop twisting knife in our Bears fans guts and stop with any stories about idiots ruining a franchise.

  3. Dalton isn’t special, but the guy sure has gotten a bad go of it his entire career. Being a Bostonian and married to a Chicago and also live in the Windy City suburbs, my wife’s bears are just a train wreck led by pace

  4. The unspectacular Andy Dalton could easily be the best QB the Bears have ever had. But, that says more about the Bears than Dalton.

  5. Short of getting lucky in the draft, I’m not sure Dalton wasn’t the best QB realistically available to the Bears this off-season. Wilson and Watson weren’t realistic options, leaving Fitzgerald, Newton, Winston, Trubisky and a bunch of other similar reclamation projects.

  6. I used to think the Jets had the dumbest GMs, but they fired Idzik and Maccagnan and seem competently run now.
    Bill O’Brien is gone.
But Ryan Pace, wow, what can I say.

    Salary cap problems – check

Bring in a garbage QB and grossly over pay him – check

Have to cut kyle fuller because of Dalton? – check

If the Bears need to rebuild, then do it the right way. Trade away good players who are near 30. Don’t waste cap money on Andy Dalton.

I bet Pace gets fired during the season, which is another mistake.
He is going to wreck the draft to try and hold onto his job.
He should have been fired after the season.

  7. I honestly believed that Andy Dalton was a good addition to the Dallas Cowboys last season.
I also thought there wouldn’t be a very big drop off in Quarterback play after Dak went down.
    I was wrong.

  8. And Nagy is going to call the plays. This team might win 4 games and that’s only if the new DC can get their defense back into shape.

  9. The GM who got us Glennon, Trubisky, and Foles is assuring is Dalton is the answer. Okay, I guess I’m sold as a Bears fan that he knows how to fix this.

  10. There is always the possibility that the Bears could select a great QB at #20 in the first round. We see it happening almost every year, where the QB’s don’t always get drafted in the order in which they perform in the NFL, and many of the greatest all time QB’s weren’t even first round picks. Aaron Rodgers was the 24th pick. Mahomes wasn’t the first QB taken. I think Dan Marino was the 6th QB drafted his year. This year should be no different. Maybe someone like Kyle Trask from Florida ends up having the best NFL career, and he should be there when they pick.

  11. Since Pace and Nagy have to realize that Dalton will not keep them employed past this year there is still plenty of time for Pace to put another torpedo into the side of this sinking ship. This years draft plus two more ones, twos and threes plus Dalton to Seattle for Russ. Seattle using a 2 plus whatever else is needed to get Darnold.

  12. Nagy is going back to calling the plays….. the secret is now out…… Da Bears are tanking for 2021.

  13. If Dolton is so great at about half of a good starter…..why a 1 year contract???

  14. Pace is finding out how difficult it is to try to bail out of one of the all time draft screw ups. He is desperate.

An improvement over who? Trubisky? Dalton has never had a higher completion percentage in his entire career that tops Trubisky last season. Dalton only had one season with a higher QBR than Trubusky had last season, but you’d have to go back 6 seasons to see it. Tell me again how Dalton is an improvement.

  16. What do you expect him to say. I still believe they can finish third in the powerful MFC North

  17. I’m a Bears fan, and my brother is a packers fan…he’s had a great QB for 100 years and us, NOPE !!!

  18. Bears fans out here trashing Dalton before he’s played a down for them. You do realize this is the best QB addition you’ve had in like decades, right?

Give the man a chance. You can always go back to your other stellar options…

    You nailed it!

  20. If you play the Bears this year Ryan Pace is a genius , if you are the Bears not so much. Everyone else does not care!

  21. Dalton played great in 2019, but his weak defense in Cincy let him down. He was good enough to win the game against Seattle that season for example. He played well in Dallas last year as well. Dallas would actually be better off with Dalton as their QB in 2021 than they do with Dak Prescott. Dalton is underrated. I think he is a better QB right now than Matt Stafford.

Bears fan here and I believe Dalton at his best will give us, maybe, what Jay Cutler did–almost. (Which would be a dramatic upgrade from the last few seasons but it’s still not enough.) He’s not on the same planet Cutty was as far as physical tools but he has a better head on his shoulders.

  23. I feel so bad for Bears fans. I didn’t know the Bears ownership was so inept. How Pace kept a job after bungling the Trubisky pick, taking on $22m a season for Nick Foles, and paying Mike Glennon 3yr-$45m I have no idea. Now he’s talking up Dalton like Bears fans don’t know who he is. What a clown show it’s become for what was once such a great organization.

  24. Is there any evidence that the current Bears “brain trust” has made pragmatic decisions in the last couple of years? Trading up for Trubisky was inexplicable. Dalton has more experience, but he’s not a long-term answer. Their front office is 20 clowns in a VW Beetle.

  25. Andy Dalton is a competent NFL QB. He won’t be the reason the Bears lose games.

  26. Pace needs to spend more time talking up Pace. Bears fans cannot stand him for the QB mess he has put them in.

  27. Just needs a line. The Bears have a lot of talent. They just need to block.

  28. Andy Dalton vs Jay Cutler is a close call. I think Dalton makes fewer mistakes, but Cutler made bigger plays. I think I like Trubiskey a little better than either of them at this point, because he’s got a little wiggle. Trubiskey’s problem is that he plays too timid, like Mariota did in Tennesee, like he was afraid to throw the ball.

It isn’t Andy Dalton’s fault that the entire Cowboy team and coaching staff folded like a cheap suitcase after Dak went down. He’s the only player I saw who played like he belonged on a professional team.

  30. the only good things that has happened to the Bears since the Super bowl is that it now looks like they will not be able to go 8 and 8 this year.

  31. Never been impressed with Dalton..not terrible ..had some pretty good players around him and never did anything great..I would compare him to a Jared Goff
