Report: 49ers want a first-round pick for Jimmy Garoppolo

Yes, Jimmy Garoppolo remains in the 49ers’ plans. Those plans include trying to trade him for more than they gave up to get him.

More than three years after acquiring Garoppolo from the Patriots for a second-round draft pick, the 49ers want a first-round pick for the balance of Garoppolo’s contract, according to Mike Giardi of NFL Media.

That’s obviously too much. Letting it be known they want a first-rounder, however, likely means that they’d take less via the negotiation process.

The separate challenge comes from Garoppolo’s compensation. He’s due to make $25 million in 2021. Would anyone actually pay him that much this year, given that he has missed 23 games in three seasons?

Time continues to be on the team’s side. As long as they’re willing to carry his cap number through the offseason, there’s no rush to trade him. The start of on-field offseason workouts and then training camp become decision points, especially if the 49ers are concerned about an in-house (wait for it) schism among the pro-Jimmy G players and those who align behind whoever they take with the third overall pick in the draft.

If the 49ers can hold it all together while confirming that the rookie is ready for Week One, the 49ers could get lucky, like the Eagles did in 2016. A fluke torn ACL suffered by Teddy Bridgewater in late August opened the door for a first-round and fourth-round Labor Dat weekend windfall for Sam Bradford.

However it all plays out, it’s hard to imagine the 49ers keeping Garoppolo at $25 million for 2021, unless the guy they pick with No. 3 ends up being wholly unable and unfit to ascend to the starting job right out of the gates. If they can get significant compensation for the balance of his contract before camp opens, however, that’s a risk they’d probably take.

  1. Be lucky to get a 3rd for him. The only team I can think of that would even consider him would be the WFT. They have a defense that is ready to win and could use someone like Jimmy G to game manage for them.

  2. We’ll see if Mac Jones is as good as Kyle thinks he is. If so, Jimmy back to NE for a second seems about right.

  3. A 1st rd pick? So the 49ers have the audacity to even suggest wanting a 1st rd pick for a guy they can’t wait to dump who’s 2021 salary is i$25 million. What in Ryan Pace is going on around here?

  4. Hilarious.

The fact they leaked this though, means they are lying about him being the qb in 2021.

All these little cute moves aren’t going to mean much. They’d be lucky to get a 4th with teams knowing they would just cut him after the draft.

No one is going to drop a precious 1st rder on a qb you don’t want. Should have dealt him quietly already.

Lynch is really bad at this game.

Have you seen the Pats D and Special Teams? Watch you. People were warned.

  6. If Jimmy was guaranteed to play all 16 games, they might be able to get a second round pick for him. Let’s face it, most teams aren’t trying to assemble a second place team. Most super bowls are won by elite QB’s. There are exceptions, but it’s no coincidence Tom Brady just won his 7th Lombardi. And the top four teams last season had 4 of the top 5 QB’s in the league. So if you don’t have a top 5 QB, you should be trying to get one. Jimmy isn’t one of them.

  7. I’m sure they do.

I want a flying pony and a million dollars.

I’ll bet we are all disappointed.

Realistically the 49ers will offer Garoppolo a pay cut to remain on the team and be the opening day starter. if he says no, they can play hardball and cut him the day before the season starts. He will have no chance of anything other than a low paying backup position because it will take him a while to learn a new teams playbook. Or he can take a pay cut and stay where he is.
He has been way over paid for his lack of productivity and the team isn’t screwing him over, its doing what’s allowed based on the contract he signed.

  8. Lots of things I want and will never get either. Possibly injury prone or just unlucky – has missed too much time to even THINK 1st rounder. Also the issue of can he be reliable throwing to the boundaries? Maybe it’s just scheme, but Jimmy G, rightly or wrongly, is kinda known for throwing over the middle. It’s just scheme, right? I dunno…
But, like the story says – asking for a 1st means teams are aware he’s on the market and they can offer. Pretty sure the 49rs know they are dreaming about a 1st – but POSSIBLY a very low 1st, but more likely a 2nd or even 3rd. Really depends on the market for him, as it does for all players – the more demand, the higher the price. How much demand will there be for him is the question.

  9. Yes and I want $800 for the old lawn mower in the shed, but that aint gonna happen either!

  10. He has reasonable salaries for 2021 and 2022 so if someone was really desperate they might give up a second- or third-round pick but I don’t see a #1. He only played six games last year and in 2018 he missed 13 games. Plus he’s very inconsistent. He had two games last year where he had a QBR in the 90s but also had a 16.2 and a 2.1. I’m not sure he’s the answer for any team when he plays like that.

  11. Good luck. He’s an injury-prone Jared Goff. They’ll probably have to give up picks to get someone to take that contract.

  12. He’s not going to be traded. There is no reason to do it. They don’t need his cap space as they have quite a bit and no major FA’s left to sign. He’s loved in the locker room by his teammates, he’s won whenever he’s been on the field and it’s better to have multiple options at the QB position than putting all your eggs in one basket. The 49ers feel they have a SB contending team and aren’t going to dump a QB who took them to the SB for a bag of beans. They either need to be blown away by an offer or they’ll ride him as far as he can take them and trade him after the season.

  13. He’s going back to New England for a second round pick this year, and a 4th round pick next year, and the 49ers are picking up $10 million of his salary

Nah. Too many picks for a guy who was just told
he was being demoted and replaced in the next 6–12 months. Just think, if Shanahan wasn’t a moron in the super bowl (again), this wouldn’t be happening.

There is something wrong with Lynch and Shanahan with each thinking their crap doesn’t stink. Way too many people in the media act like
    they’ve arrived when they haven’t.

He’s clearly better than Goff. When BB trains you, you’re at least an above average qb.

Goff was a 1st rd pick, too.

JimmyG gets the ball out and it’s accurate. Goff? Nope. He needs playaction to be any good.

  16. I want to hit the Lottery. I doubt that will happen either. At least the 49ers weren’t greedy and ask for 3 1st Rounders.

  17. If he was worth a first they wouldn’t have given up 2 first rounders to get someone to replace him.

  18. That is not a “report.” Shanahan and Lynch NEVER said anything of the sort. In fact both have said that he is their quarterback in 2021. It is just scuttlebutt, just like a thousand other rumors that have been released recently about Jimmy G.

  19. Teams that need a QB: the price is a first rounder. Laugh all you want but your team is the one that has to call Cam Newton or Ryan Fitzpatrick its starting QB.

  20. Bottom line. If Jimmy G. is good, the 49ers have no reason to trade him NOW. If he is bad, no team would trade their number 1 pick for him and pick up his $25 million salary too.

  21. Money aside — right now, if you had to choose your starting quarterback… and the choice was between Marcus Mariota and Jimmy G, which would you choose?

And what does that say about the other?

  22. I skipped the article and came for the comments. Jimmy G for a 1st, the jokes write themselves.

  23. Hahahaha, and I want $20,000,000 in my bank account and a Victoria Secret model girlfriend.

  24. You would get more for him than the raiders would get for Carr, but it sure as heck won’t be a 1st.

  25. Bill will wait for Garrapolo to be released, sign Jimmy for 15M with incentives to make up the other 10 based on games played, performance.

  26. When you just mortgaged your future to take his replacement, you’re getting a first for the guy. I won’t be shocked if they use this as a bridge year to compete while the rookie gets his feet under him, and then cut him next offseason. They don’t need to trade him—so they’ll look for something crazy to move him, or let him play out a lame duck year as QB, with him knowing that he needs to look good if he wants his next team to pay him.

  27. Yeah right. I want a lot of things, but I’ll probably only get a very few!

Not an upgrade over Fitzpatrick in all honesty.

  29. Teams that want Jimmy G. should just wait a year. Aside–I’m trying to think of another athlete that is known by his first name and then an initial for his last name. The guy does have some star power.

    ————————————————-

Uhhh you do realize Ryan Fitzpatrick though older is a better more consistent QB than Jimmy G is at this point and he doesn’t bring the injury baggage that Jimmy does. I’d rather have Fitzy on my team than pretty much no QB as they’re done with Jimmy G and the 3QBs available to them at 3rd overall all on their best days give SF by far the worst QB1s in the NFC West. None of those guys are likely even ready to start year one either, Fields n Lance definitely aren’t. The reason people are lagging at SF is their JOKE of a QB situation which I couldn’t mismanage any better if I tried giving up 3 1st round picks for a QB who’s not worth even a single 1st rd pick if they end up taking the poor man Daniel Jones in Mac Jones.

  31. Cue high expectations! And cue expectations not being met and funny music, thank you for playing.

  32. I guess “Wish in one hand, what the 49rs will get for Jimmy G in the other?” Wait…that isn’t how it’s supposed to go.

  33. So they gave up a 2nd to get him, his value is lower now then it was then and they want a 1st to ship him out to someone else.

I think his value is maybe a 3rd. He went from potential franchise QB groomed in Patriots system to stop gap/solid backup. Theres value there but no one is looking to make him their QB of the future.

    ————————————————————————————-

I dont think so. Carr is a better passer than Grop. Jimmy G is the liability on offense in SF, the weak link. The Niners clearly know it hence the trade to upgrade at QB. Hell the Niners likely beat the Chiefs in the SB if you replace Grop with Carr. Of course simply not abandoning the running game would have won it too.

  35. I can’t see him starting for SF this year without a drastic pay cut. If he is on the roster week 1, his entire salary is guaranteed. $26.4 mil cap hit.
Think about that when you are eyeing upcoming extensions for Fred Warner, Mike McGlinchy and Nick Bosa.

  36. Pace and Nagy are on the hot seat looking at entering the year with Andy Dalton as QB. SF will eat some of the contract, and Chicago will send a 2022 or 2023 1st round pick, knowing that if they fail this season the GM and Coach won’t be around for those next years anyway. If they can’t get a trade for Jimmy this year, they’ll roll with him for 2021 and rehab his value and trade him next offseason. He’s not getting cut, that’s nuts.

  37. 49rs want a #1 for Jimmy G = that’s hilarious. Last week they are not trading – he’s our guy. This week not so much. No one is eating that contract Lynchy and giving you a #1. Pressure is on the 49rs they can’t pay Jimmy $25 million with top 3 pick QB on their roster. They will blink before week one. Me personally – I wouldn’t give a #1 or #2 for Jimmy – I would consider a 3 or a 4 and based on his injury history I would renegotiate his deal and go with a $10-12 million dollar base with incentive contract set up on the number of games he starts. If he starts 17 games he could make $22-$25 million

  38. Because Belichick wants him back, he’ll get him back. Jimmy G wants to come back too.

We’ll see what the real price will be.

  39. I highly doubt anyone is taking on that 25 mil salary at the price of a 1st rd pick ! They maybe get a 3rd or 4th if they eat some of the salary other wise its pay him or cut him.

  40. At the peak of his value he was worth a 2nd round pick…. his time in SF has tanked his value since then. Think Brock Osweiler trade where the Texans traded away picks to get out of his contract.

  41. The primary knock on JimmyG is injury related. When healthy he is a franchise QB who came within one TD of winning a SB. But that’s a big if. He was also injured while subbing for Brady, so Belichick is well aware of the problem. In terms of playing ability he is substantially better than Mariota, Fitzpatrick, Winston and Foles, when healthy. A big if.

    ____________

Franchise QB? Their team just traded three first rounders for what they hope is a franchise QB. Jimmy has been in the league 7 years. Only once has he appeared in more than 6 games in a year.

  43. Jimmy G has shown he can take a team to the Super Bowl. There are a lot of teams in need of a QB who can get them to the big dance. AZ, Philly, Houston, Miami, Dallas, Baltimore ect would all love to have a QB that can get them there. I could see them getting a 1st and a 3rd.

  44. 49ers brass-I’m pretty sure we will get a 1st rounder for Jimmy.
    Tracey Morgan-pretty sure?
I’m pretty sure this fault is stable-cue disaster
I’m pretty sure Mullens and Beathard can get us to the playoffs.
I’m pretty sure the Seahawauare nothing to worry about in division.
49ers Brass-Let’s take the best offer we get and be sure we get something.
    Tracey Morgan-good choice

  46. If Lynch wants a first, Denver has to decide if Jimmy G is worth the 9th pick in the draft. They are trying to replace Lock and Jimmy G has a recent Super Bowl appearance under his belt. The injuries are obviously concerning, but Jimmy is under contract for 2 more seasons for a manageable $25m a year and all his guaranteed money has been paid out (only dead cap hits of $2.8m & $1.4m). As a Broncos fan, I say be bold and make the trade. The Broncos are a legit QB away from being relevant with all of their young weapons.

  47. Sorry.
I don’t but this story for a second.
No rookie QB has ever won a SB.

This move is so risky. I hope the 49ers know what they are doing.
2018, Jets traded up to No. 3 for Sam Darnold
2017, Bears traded up to No. 2 for Mitchell Trubisky
2016, Rams traded up to No. 1 for Jared Goff
2016, Eagles traded up to No. 2 for Carson Wentz
2012, Washington traded up to No. 2 for Robert Griffin III

  48. The Niners gave up a ton to put themselves in position to draft a good QB because they need one, and people think the guy they’re throwing away is worth a first round pick??? It’s ridiculous.

  49. Granted the situations are different leverage wise. However, results wise, Carson Wentz netted the eagles a 2nd rounder that’s a conditional first and is substantially better than Garropolo. No chance a team gives the niners a first for Jimmy

  50. Every team knows they are not happy with JG10 in SF, so how can SF feel that they can get more for JG then what they paid for (a 2nd rounder). They have zero leverage here since every team know they are picking QB in the 1st. And what they used for picks to get there, may as well start the kid on Day1!

This touchback6 guy is as clueless as they come. Which “Belichick “trained” QB has made it? Brady wasn’t trained by Belichick. Let’s face it – BB was a loser before Brady came and went right back to being a loser. Best case scenario for Pats is 8-8 this year.

  52. Do any of you pay any attention to football at all? Teams do crazy things… things you would never have imagined each and every year in search of a qb. Especially one with some form of pedigree. Nobody would have had called 3 picks and Goff for Stafford the day before the trade… just slow down and stop saying never.. they may not get a first… they very well could. Wait until after draft clears… you’ll see all sorts of nonsense related to potential QBs

  53. I don’t think a player that has missed as many games as Jimmy G has missed is deserving of 25M bucks and a first round pick. The only way they are able to trade him realistically is to eat part of that 25M contract payout and then expect a 3rd round pick or at best a 2nd round pick for him. More importantly he must have to agree to the deal as he has a no trade clause. I suspect that he stays with the Niners till such time that the new QB pick shows up in training camp. If he shows starting potential, that is the time Jimmy will be released. Otherwise he’ll be the starter this year. They don’t have a choice.

  54. And I want $25,000 for my John Beck rookie card. Neither one of these things are going to happen.

  55. When his value was at his highest Jimmy G couldn’t command first round value. Now that he’s shown he can’t stay healthy and his play is average at best, they want more in a trade then they gave up for him? Good Luck.

  56. BaHahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

They must have made that statement on April 1st, as an April Fools joke! Good One SF!
