Report: Falcons have had “exploratory talks” about trading back from No. 4

There has never been an NFL Draft that started with four quarterbacks being taken with the first four picks, but it’s not hard to see that happening this year.

Jacksonville is set to take Trevor Lawrence with the first overall pick, the Jets look like a good bet to take Zach Wilson at No. 2, and the 49ers made a big move to position themselves for a quarterback with the third pick. That brings us to the Falcons at No. 4 and it’s less clear what they could do.

They reworked Matt Ryan‘s contract to clear cap space and the move makes it unlikely they’ll be moving on from him before the end of the 2022 season. They could still take a quarterback to groom behind Ryan, of course, or they pick a player like Kyle Pitts in hopes of making Ryan even more productive.

Atlanta could also trade the pick to another team. Albert Breer of SI.com reports that they’ve had “exploratory talks” about such a deal with the start of the draft growing closer. If they do make a deal, it seems likely that it would be with a team moving to assure themselves of a quarterback and that seems likely to lead to a little history being made at the top of the draft.

  1. As a fan of the Falcons, I hope they do trade back. Preferably with DEN so you only drop to 9. Sure, you’ll likely miss out on any top QB (if that is indeed a target), Sewell, Pitts and Chase, but then there is still a good chance at Surtain, Slater, Paye, the other top WRs, etc.

I think Atlanta is in a great position to mull offers right now while sitting at 4 and being the highest option for a team to trade up with as it stands.

  2. Why are you putting the Lions helmet there? Come on…no chance the Lions trade up for a guy that would sit for two years when they need the amount of things they do….geesh

  3. If Atlanta makes a move then Carolina seems to make the most sense for both side. Atlanta seems to want to go 1 to 2 more years at least with Ryan and a trade with the Panthers allows them to get an immediate contributor still this year and it’s been repeated time and time again the Panthers are looking to improve at qb.

  4. I would as I don’t think the 4th QB left will be anything more than a bust. This year’s draft is pretty weak compared to most while they are expecting next year to be one of the better ones. Move back and pick up as many picks in the top 40 as you can for next year. The franchise trading up more than likely will be desperate and will take a QB that can give you good picks for the near future.

  5. Only teams that make logical sense is the Panthers or Broncos. Can’t see the Falcons been willing to drop to 15th, 19th, or 20th.

  6. They might as well trade the pick. With Matty Choker at QB until at least the end of 2022 they’ll have another top-5 draft pick next year and the year after.

  7. IF ATlanta moves back it does for Carolina’s 8th or stretchhh to 9 if Denver really overpay. with ATL trade back Draft goes QB 1-4. 5-Cin JChase. 6-Mia should take OT Sewell otherwise Pitts/ 1 of Ala WR. 7-Det WR. @ 8 ATl plan A- Pitts if he slides past Mia (HUGE WIN) plan B- either Alabama WR/ Sewell. …Mia has too many wr’s but talk is Alabama wr ?? hence actual NEED OT for them. if ATL trades to 9 then Carolina would take Pitts or wr there depending availability so ATl might only have Sewell avail if offensive weapons all gone. therefore needs more for 9th pick but no lower than 9. bottom line keep pick or trade with Carolina/ Denver

  8. I don’t think a trade w/Atlanta will occur until everyone knows which QB the 49ers take at #3. Atlanta would be smart to wait and see which team is most desperate and values the remaining QBs the most.

  9. IMO this is one of the best picks of the draft. Basically whatever team uses this gets their pick the best non-QB in the draft.

  10. If Atlanta makes a move then Carolina seems to make the most sense for both side. Speaking as a Panther fan, I don’t think I’m going out on a limb by saying that there is NO WAY we make a deal with Atlanta (the team most Carolina fans consider their most hated division rival) for QB in the 1st round.

    1) We just gave up 3 picks in 2021 and 2022 to get Sam Darnold.
    2) We would move up 4 slots, but likely have to give up several choices, including next year’s #1 to make the deal to grab the “fourth best” QB in the draft.
    3) We then would have to live with the possibly see Atlanta will use those extra draft choices to reload and make our lives miserable since we have to play them twice each year.

    No thanks.
