The Jets are set to add a rookie quarterback with the second overall pick in this month’s draft and they’re also set to talk to a potential veteran to back up that quarterback.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports Brian Hoyer is scheduled to visit with the Jets on Thursday.

Hoyer returned to the Patriots for a third tour of duty last season and started one game while Cam Newton was on the COVID-19 reserve list. He was pulled for Jarrett Stidham during that game and fell to the third spot on the depth chart over the rest of the season.

He’s started 39 games for seven teams since entering the league in 2009, including a run with the 49ers in 2017 when Jets head coach Robert Saleh and offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur were on the staff. That long run in the NFL means Hoyer would bring a lot of experience to his role as a mentor to Zach Wilson or any other quarterback the Jets should take.

The Jets currently have 2020 fourth-round pick James Morgan and Mike White on the roster at quarterback.

  1. I’ve always liked Hoyer, and he’s one of those QBs who just can’t quite make it all the way to be a consistent starting QB, much like Fitz. He’s won at times and proven himself very capable, but then has implosions like that awful playoff game for Houston.

  2. There’s no way they draft Zach Wilson if they sign Brian Hoyer, Hoyer is a straight beast

  3. The Patriots, like most teams, have always had 3 QBs on their roster. Why not keep the veteran Hoyer, who knows New England’s system, to back up Newton and Stidham? It’s not about money. It’s because Belichick is planning to draft a quarterback in the first round, either at the team’s spot, 15, or by trading up. This has been an extremely out-of-character off-season for the Patriots. I expect BB to make one more startling move. Lance or Mills or Trask are the most likely picks.

If you know the system but can’t execute it what’s the point?

  5. I always liked Hoyer but he completely blew his shot. CM had Covid. Hoyer came in and threw up a terrible egg.

Hope he can do better in his next opportunity.

  6. When the other two guys are Cam newton and Jarrett Stidham and you are not resigned, take anything you can get, even if it is the lowly Jets.
