Byron Jones: We expect a big jump from Tua Tagovailoa

In an interview with Mike Florio and Chris Simms on PFT Live in February, Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa said that he is “hoping to be a lot better” in 2021 than he was during his rookie season.

The fact that he wasn’t great as a rookie led some to wonder if the Dolphins might use the No. 3 pick in the draft to provide them with another option at quarterback, but the team didn’t show any signs of wavering and their decision to trade that pick was further signal that Tagovailoa is their guy.

Improvement remains a must, however, and cornerback Byron Jones said on NFL Network that the expectation around the team is that it will be a major leap forward.

“It’s exciting. This team is comprised of a bunch of young guys,” Jones said. “Obviously, he’s going into his second year. What we saw last year was great from him but we expect a big jump. The kid’s been working, I know he’s been working. He’s been a great kid. Really good head on his shoulders. And that’s the beauty of it. We’re surrounded by a bunch of good guys who want to be great again. So I’m looking forward to seeing his jump. His contributions to the team have been great so far, but we’re looking for even something better this year. It’s exciting. I can’t wait to see him work his magic.”

The expected return of in-person offseason work and a year of NFL experience should benefit Tagovailoa’s bid for progress in his second season. If it doesn’t, the Dolphins have a pair of first-round picks in each of the next two seasons that could be used as capital to find someone else.

  1. Playing the hapless Patriots defense and jets defense should booster his confidence.

  2. Mac Jones = Tua Tagovailoa. I don’t understand why teams fall for Alabama QB’s under Saban. Highly accurate, yes. But they throw to NFL 1st round receivers. They have 1st round offensive lineman protecting them. Little bit different when the protection and skill players aren’t as good. See Tua’s 1st season. Don’t fall for it 49ers!

  3. I really don’t understand the narrative surrounding Tua – are rookie QBs only given 1 season to be MVP candidates these days? I have no idea if he’ll grade out as a legit franchise QB, but this is way too early to talk about replacing the guy.

  4. I concur with the Alabama (and Ohio State) QB reviews. Those QB and RB’s should always be evaluated with a grain of salt for getting to play in EASY MODE.

  5. Last chance season fo Tua , if he is the starter after the “virtual” training camp

  6. I was surprised the Dolphins traded down, because they could have picked a good QB prospect to compete with Tua and trade the loser.

On the other hand the Dolphins made a killing trading down. Maybe with more players and a full year Tua takes a big step forward. Reevaluate in 2022.

  7. I’m not a tua fan at all but I will be if he balls out and gets us in the playoffs. That being said he has a full offseason to get stronger and faster, focus on football and not rehabbing. I think we better see a jump this season.

  8. Tua will be throwing to NFL receivers which are better than college receivers and NFL lineman

  9. Flo is going to make sure that Tua has some playmakers around him this season, unlike last season when all they had on offense was WR Parker with no running game. The O line will be way better with the 2 rookies from last year.
He managed to win 6 games anyway. He’s a winner. The Dolphins are going to be good this season..

  10. Geesh talk about big time pressure for these young QBs. Josh Rosen hasn’t even played a full season and hes gone. Its a new trend… Play good or good bye(?) Payton Manning, Steve Young, Drew Brees – well allot of guys werent really good at first.

  11. I expect great things. He’s put on weight. He’s working to develop familiarity with his receivers.

  12. Cooking with the Chefs says, “How did tank for Tua work out?”
Look at the big brain on this guy.
If you watch football you may have noticed the Dolphins won 5 games the year they were “tanking”. This year they won 10 games with a very young team and 2nd yr coach. Get your jokes in now, before it’s too late.

  13. Honestly I am expecting a bug jump from Byron Jones next year. He played ok but he certainly underwhelmed compared to his massive contract and really just his play in general was merely ok. I hope Byron isnt resting on his “accomplishments” from last year.

  14. I am willing to give Tua an incomplete for last season. He lost his confidence down the stretch and it showed. It’s not easy to play well when you don’t have talented players around you. His QB rating was 87.1. Tom Brady’s was 88.0 his last year in New England when he had to deal with playing with garbage.

  15. Let me get this straight. You are suggesting that if a quarterback goes to play on the best team for the best coach, beats out 2 or 3 other NFL caliber QBs to start and plays great he should not be considered a good QB. Nuts.

The difference is that Tua and Mac Jones are the first highly touted QBs to come out of Alabama. I didn’t see people calling AJ McCarron, Jake Coker, Blake Sims, or John Parker Wilson first round QBs.

I’m not saying Tua or Jones are going to be Hall of Famer’s; they could bust out easily, but Bama has been good for a while and these are the only two being touted as first round talent.
