JuJu Smith-Schuster says Chiefs, not Ravens, were his second choice

The Chiefs got involved late in the running for receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster. The recruiting effort, which included coach Andy Reid texting photos of a Lombardi Trophy, didn’t keep Smith-Schuster from returning to the Steelers. However, it apparently made the Chiefs the first runners up.

Via Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com, Smith-Schuster told Michael Irvin that the Chiefs, not the Ravens, were Smith-Schuster’s second choice.  Apparently, Smith-Schuster wasn’t interested in playing receiver in an offense that doesn’t throw much to the receivers.

“Lamar [Jackson]’s a really, a heavy run offense with the backs that he has,” Smith-Schuster said. “I just, just point being facts. His No. 1 target was [Mark] Andrews, who’s a tight end.”

It’s possible that the Ravens really were Smith-Schuster’s second choice at the time, but now that he’s back on the Pittsburgh payroll he needs to re-embrace the Baltimore rivalry. While a far cry from a Browns is the Browns-style remark from Smith-Schuster, Smith-Schuster’s position on the Baltimore offense is something that the Ravens surely will remember when the two 2021 games against the Steelers are approaching.

  1. I’m a Ravens fan, and his assessment is not wrong. Can’t blame him for wanting to be where the receivers get thrown the ball more regularly.

  2. Well, he’s entirely correct about the Baltimore offense. They’ve got a running back at the QB position and their passing attack is high school level. No good receiver with options will go there. It would be a terrible career move.

  3. Who cares? This guy just loves to hear himself talk. Chances are none of this is true. The only thing I believe is his first choice was who was going to give him the most money. Something tells me nobody else offered him the $20M+ he was expecting.

  4. JuJu wants to have a big 2021 season and then hit the market again next season with some stats to back it up. He knew that blocking on every play in baltimore was a terrible fit to accomplish that, and that obviously in KC tyreek and Kelce were going to receive the lion’s share of the targets. Pittsburgh was the most logical choice for what he wants, at least until next season.

  5. Ugh, PUHLEEZE! He’s bragging about who he would have taken to the prom second and third. His first date is gonna get pissed!

and yet they still lead the league in points scored since 2019. That’s one amazing running attack.

  7. JuJu is just super immature. He can’t stop talking. Its a distraction.

His play on the field doesn’t add up. He was a DECENT Robin to Antonio Brown’s Batman. He’s ill suited to be a #1 in terms of his talent. He’s not a leader with how he handles himself off the field.

The continued chirping about his poor free agency is just more immaturity. Call a spade a spade. Steelers gave you the best deal. Money talks.

  8. Glad the Ravens didn’t sign this chump. He’s a good receiver but talks more than he plays and they don’t need a guy who cares more about posting on tik tok than playing football. That being said he would have been better off signing with the Chiefs since Rothlisburger is about done.

  9. This Ravens fan wasn’t happy with the idea of him coming to Baltimore and glad it didn’t work out. Why does Pittsburgh grow so many diva receivers?

  10. When are the Ravens going to realize that Lamar is not an asset in recruiting WRs to the team? The silence is deafening– and you can’t ignore it. Getting Sammy Watkins in a year with lots of targets out there unfortunately provides yet another data point in how real players think about Lamar as a QB. Not as a runner, but as an actual QB.

  11. What has JuJu done since AB left? Nothing. He needs a true #1 to take the heat off of him so he probably would’ve done well with Tyreek taking the coverage.
