XFL, CFL champions could meet

The appetite for football and betting on football could open the door for even more football.

Via Michael McCarthy of FrontOfficeSports.com, the XFL and CFL champions could meet in an interleague championship game.

It’s a simple proposition. The two leagues would play their seasons, possibly with interleague games between the XFL and the CFL, with an interleague championship game capping the action. According to McCarthy, there also could be an all-star game pitting players from the two leagues.

This obviously means that the XFL would shift its calendar or the CFL would moves it calendar, or possibly a little of both. The XFL returned in 2020 as a spring league. The CFL has played during the summer months and into November.

As we’ve said time and again, a market exists for Tuesday and Wednesday night football games during traditional football season, at least until the NFL starts playing games on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Which the NFL quite possibly would do if other leagues started infringing on the two nights between the end of one NFL week and the start of a new one.

The XFL and CFL also could eventually merge. In 2020, the XFL had eight seasons. In 2019, the CFL played its most recent season with nine teams. A combined XFL-CFL could also launch teams in places like Mexico, Germany, and other European countries.

In the 1990s, the CFL expanded into the U.S., a short-lived experiment that put teams in places like Baltimore, Las Vegas, and Shreveport.

Vince McMahon re-launched the XFL after a 19-year gap between XFL 1.0 and XFL 2.0. The resurrected league died again during the pandemic, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson buying the carcass and now trying to bring it back to life, again.

As more and more states legalize sports betting and as more and more people look for sports on which to bet, a combined XFL and CFL could work.

  1. Just don’t start the league the week after the NFL and you will have a market for it. Bringing in the CFL as a partner is a great idea and I never thought a 2nd league could work.

  2. 4 downs
    XFL field.
    XFL kickoff
    CFL 12 men
    No yard off the ball
Traditional XP/2XP if you keep the CFL rouge single point otherwise keep XFL extra point rules and scrap rouge
    CFL unlimited presnap motion
Put goalposts at the back of the end zone no reason why they should be in the way
CFL 5 yard halo/no fair catch

    Seems straightforward to me.

  3. xfl rules
    4 downs
    xfl sized fields
goal posts in back of endzones
expansion of cfl and xfl, with teams in Mexico also

  4. Strange.

NFL players playing an extra 17th game is bad, but CFL teams already playing 18 regular season games and now another game with the XFL – where’s the fake moral outrage over “player safety”?

  5. Or all the people who want more football should start watching the CFL. Yes it could be more accessible to U.S. TV markets. It’s a stand alone league in my opinion with unique longstanding rules and after it’s last failed expansion experiment would it be wise to tie it’s future to a startup American league when none have succeeded since the AFL?

  6. They would have more of a right to call themselves “world champs” than the NFL does.

  7. Have them play with NFL rules because all the players in those leagues wish they were in the NFL.

  8. April to June football has a market. I rather watch an XFL quality football game without a bet on it than a MLB game with a bet on it.

I agree with most but instead

I go with the CFL field but 15 yard end zones instead of 20

Still give the yard off the ball for defence

    And 20 seconds play clock

Clock stops after a first down while chains are being moved and set

I don’t mind the goal posts at the front as missed field goals can be returned

  10. There might be a market for Tuesday and Wednesday night NFL football games, but it remains to be seen if there’s a market for CFL and XFL games. I’ll watch NFL games 7 days a week, if they’re on, but I’m not making any promises about those other leagues. There’s a good chance I wouldn’t watch one game.

I remember the CFL had problems finding stadiums that could accommodate their field size when they tried to expand to the USA a couple decades ago. An increase in end zone length might work to 15 yards might work.

I think the CFL also doesn’t have a running clock inside the last 3 minutes of a half even on a running play, the clock doesn’t start until the ball is spotted. I wouldn’t mind seeing that.

Obviously unless there’s an actual merger there’s no discussion about overtime. CFL uses NCAA style of overtime.

I agree with most of what you said GMG. Especially 4 downs. 2-downs-punt, 2-downs-punt, no thank you. That being said, I like the unlimited pre snap motion.
